Chapter 27:
CHAIN
---
*CHAPTER 26 - WHEN THE MASK FALLS -
_INT. DARK DIMENSION - CONTINUOUS - No time, no light, only Ahmet's voice and their breathing. Floor is black glass, reflecting them, but reflections look older, tired._
_The whole class is frozen after Ahmet's words. Not because they are scared of his power, of his seal, of his ability to burn. Because for the first time in 3 years, someone said out loud what they all knew but buried under "we are friends" posts. The air is heavy, like before a storm, humid, electric, pressing on chests. No one breathes, because breathing feels like agreeing._
_They are affected, even if just a little, even the hardest. Even Gizem is standing still in her place, her knife dropped to the ground, its tip red from her own palm where she squeezed, her hands shaking, not from cold, from questioning herself for first time since Chapter 0. For the first time in months, her eyes are not angry, not detective, not sarcastic. They are empty. Guilty. Human._
_GIZEM / whisper, to herself, voice child-like, 14-year-old Gizem before high school made her tough:_
"...what have we done... what did we do to him... what did we do to that kid in white pants..."
_Ahmet breaks the silence. He looks at Gizem's dropped knife on black glass, looks at blood, and laughs. With disgust, but also with pleasure, with relief. The pleasure of a man who finally gets to tell the truth after years of swallowing it, after years of being told "shut up"._
_AHMET - floating a bit, cloak not moving, seal on forehead glowing soft red, not angry red, sad red:_
"You think I'm right, don't you? I can see it in your faces. That's right. Nod. Don't be shy now. You can nod, no teacher here to punish you for agreeing with freak. You humans... you disgust me. You know what I did when I got this form? When I left this weak, pathetic flesh, this flesh that you kicked in mud? I thanked God. I knelt down in this darkness and thanked Him. Finally... finally I got rid of this filthy life form. Finally I'm not one of you. Finally I don't have to pretend to be kind to be loved."
_Beyza can't take it anymore. Her whole body shakes, not from fear, from years of being quiet, from being the girl who always nodded, who said "okay" to Buğra, "okay" to mom, "okay" to everyone to keep peace. She turns to Ahmet, crying, but not from fear, from years of being quiet finally exploding._
_BEYZA - voice broken, but standing:_
"Shut up, Ahmet. Please, just shut up! You don't know anything! You don't know what we went through! You weren't there! You left! You left us here!"
_Ahmet slowly turns to Beyza, head tilting, like owl. His shadow grows on the wall, huge, covering entire class. He's about to throw up everything he has held inside for years right into her face. This is what he's been waiting for since 12:56, since corridor, since square kiss. This moment._
_AHMET (voice dripping with venom, smiling, but eyes wet, because he still loves her, that's tragedy):_
"What is it, Beyza? Does the truth hurt? Does it hurt more than 'you're disgusting'? Don't cry now, princess. You were so good at playing innocent. So good. Oscar. After all, you're also a despicable human. You got together with Buğra just for his money, didn't you? Just for his poşet, just like those uncles at the bayram in Chapter 0. You never even loved him. You loved his bag. You loved his Nike shoes. You loved that he could buy you ice cream. Admit it. You are exactly like the people you hate. You became village. You became aunties who didn't give seat to your father."
_Beyza freezes. For a second, she looks like she will collapse, like slap. Buğra looks at her, hurt, eyes wide, because he never thought that, because he thought she loved him, because he bought her things but thought she loved him for him. The whole class holds its breath, waiting for her to deny it, to cry and say "no, I love Buğra, I swear". Waiting for old Beyza, quiet Beyza._
_But she doesn't. She does the opposite. She breaks character. She becomes new character, final evolution._
_She wipes her tears with anger, with back of hand, hard, smearing, not gentle. Stands up straight, shoulders back. And this time she doesn't stay silent. She screams with years of anger and fear, in tears, but her voice is steel, is knife, is louder than Ahmet's echo:_
_This is Beyza's strongest line, the moment she stops being a victim, stops being "lucky girl", becomes human:_
_BEYZA (screaming, voice cracking, echoing in dark dimension, pointing at Ahmet, finger shaking):_
"Don't talk like you're the only one who suffered! You think I wanted to choose Buğra for money?! You think I had a choice?! You think I woke up and said 'I want to be gold digger'? You could never understand why I chose Buğra! My family... my house... you know nothing! You didn't live in my house! You didn't see my father sit in corner with empty hands! You didn't see my mother cry because we couldn't buy meat! And I'm glad I chose Buğra! Because Buğra never tried to kill us! Rather than choosing a monster like you! Rather than choosing a boy who becomes this! At least he stayed human! At least he didn't turn pain into murder! You turned your pain into our pain!"
_Shock in the class. Real shock. Everyone looks at Beyza. Even Buğra is stunned, mouth open, tears now, because he never saw Beyza like this, because he never knew why she chose him, because he thought it was love but now hears it's fear, but also hears she defends him. No one did. For years she was the quiet girl who smiled and nodded and said "disgusting" to survive. Now she is fire, she is mother bear, she is Chapter 0's little girl who squeezed father's hand grown up._
_Ahmet pauses for a moment. His smile flickers, like bulb, like his seal flickers. He didn't expect her to fight back, he expected her to cry and say sorry. He prepared for tears, not for fire. Then... he smiles again. Very slowly, very terrifyingly. Wider. Because Beyza fell right into the trap he wanted, or did she? Because she just proved his point and disproved at same time._
_AHMET / his voice turns into a whisper, but every word is like a knife cutting through the dark, he points his long finger at her, then at Buğra, then at all of them, slow, like teacher calling names in attendance:_
_This is Ahmet's strongest line - the one the jury will underline, the line that defines whole book, the thesis:_
_AHMET:_
"You still don't get it, Beyza. You really don't. I'm not the monster. YOU are the monsters. Look at you. You just sold Buğra to save yourself. Again. Just like you did in real life. You said 'I'm glad I chose Buğra' to hurt me, to make me jealous, to make me feel small again. Same script. Nothing changed. In corridor you said 'you're disgusting' to save yourself from shame. Here you say 'at least he stayed human' to save yourself from my truth. Same. You use people as shield. That's human. That's monster."
_He takes a step forward. His feet don't touch the ground, he glides on black glass, reflection not following. He points at everyone, one by one, pronouncing their sins like court, like Azrael with list._
_AHMET:_
"Since you came here, I haven't killed any of you. Not one. Look at my hands, clean. Kerem... Haydarcan... Cenk... Irem... I didn't kill any of them. YOU did. To survive. Kerem died because you didn't share water in bus, you watched him dehydrate and said 'he's sealed'. Haydarcan died because you locked the door in hotel basement, you heard him knocking and you held door. Cenk died because you all watched, you filmed, you laughed, like you laughed at my letter. I didn't touch them. You did. With your silence. With your fear. With your phones recording. With your 'not my business'."
_Silence. A deadly, suffocating silence. No one can deny it, because it's true. Every single word is true, they know, they remember, they try to forget but Ahmet remembers for them, that's his power. He is memory they erased._
_AHMET - spreading arms, like priest, like judge, like victim turned judge, cloak spreading like wings, shadow covering all:_
"Those fake moral masks you wear on your faces... the 'I'm a good person' masks you wear at school, at family dinner, at Instagram... they fell. Here. In this darkness. No teachers, no parents, no likes, no filters. Just you. And you are ugly. You are scared, small, bag-measured humans. I just... watched them fall. I didn't have to do anything. You did it yourselves. I just gave you a push, like you gave me a push in that side street. One push."
_Beyza collapses to her knees. Not because Ahmet pushed her with power. Because her legs can't hold the weight of the truth anymore. Because Ahmet is right, and being right when you are monster is worst kind of right. Because she remembers she held door for Haydarcan. She remembers she didn't give water to Kerem._
_Gizem starts to cry. For the first time since story began. Not angry tears, not sarcastic tears. Real tears. Human tears, hot, falling on black glass, sizzling._
_GIZEM (sobbing, kneeling, hands on head):_
"Enough... Enough already... stop talking... please stop... we know... we know we are bad... stop..."
_She picks up her knife from the ground, not to threaten, not to kill for survival, but to end this, to end voice, to end guilt, to end game. She thrusts her knife into Ahmet's heart. Slowly, both hands, crying._
_Ahmet doesn't block. Doesn't dodge. He looks at the knife entering, looks at blood that is not red but black-blue, like sphere, like galaxy. Then at them one last time, at Beyza on knees, at Buğra crying, at Gizem stabbing, at Simge holding Beyza, at all. And he smiles. Peacefully. As if he finally won, as if he finally got what he wanted: to be seen, to be heard, to be stabbed instead of ignored._
_AHMET (whisper, blood on his lips, black blood, but still smiling, eyes finally white again, human again, Ahmet again, not monster, just boy in white sweater):_
"You were asking if the game is over. The game is just beginning. Now... now there is no monster to blame. No Ahmet to blame. No seal to blame. Now... you will play with yourselves. Let's see how long your masks stay off when there is no monster. Let's see if you become better... or worse... Let's see if Efe will have to come back..."
_The lights go out completely. The darkness swallows even his smile, swallows knife, swallows black glass, swallows all. Only sound is Gizem sobbing and Beyza breathing hard._
_BLACKOUT. For 10 seconds, nothing._
---
_Even though Ahmet died, somehow nothing happened. They still couldn't return to the real world. The bus didn't start. The fog didn't lift. The portal didn't close. Because the real seal was never Ahmet. The real seal was never sphere. The real seal was what they did to each other. And that seal was still locked. The key was not knife. The key was what muscular kid did years later._
_And in that blackout, in that nothing, they heard it again. HRRRNNGGGHHH... HRRRNNGGGHHH... But this time, it was not from Room 206. It was from inside them. From their own chests. Their own guilt snoring, looped._
