Chapter 29:

FINAL

CHAIN

---

*FINALE - YEARS LATER -

_Years later. 7 years later. Maybe 8. Time doesn't heal, that's a lie adults tell. Time just teaches you how to walk with a limp without people noticing, how to smile with scar._

_Bugra and Beyza got married. Young marriage, 21. Everyone said "too early, you will divorce, you are kids". But when you survive something like that together, something like university portal, blood, fog, Ahmet, you don't want to waste time arguing about wedding date. You want to hold. Had kids. Two kids. Boy 4, girl 2. Grocery bags in their hands, cheap plastic bags from BIM and A101, thin, handles cutting into fingers, tomatoes sticking out, bread sticking out, milk. A tired peace on their faces, the kind that parents have at 5 pm after whole day. The kind of peace that comes not from happiness, but from forgetting. From actively, every day, consciously, pretending that high school was just a bad dream, that Ahmet was just a bad dream, that Çınar Square never happened, that bus never moved by itself._

_Their kids run ahead, laughing, racing each other to the corner, shouting "I will win!". One has Beyza's eyes, big, brown, curious. The other has Bugra's stubborn hair that never stays down. Beyza smiles, real smile, for a second, she feels normal, feels like normal mom who only worries about ice cream melting and diapers. For a second, she forgets the burn mark that Bugra still hides with his hair, behind ear, small, round, from sphere explosion. For a second, she is just a mom, not a survivor._

_Then, their path takes them where they never wanted to go again. Not on purpose. They took a shortcut because their son wanted ice cream from the old shop near school, the one that sells 3 scoops for 20 TL. The shortcut is Kazim Kaynak Anatolian High School. The same iron gate, rusted a little more, paint peeling more, "KKAL 2028" sprayed. The same cracked walls where they wrote stupid love notes with white-out. Same yard where everything broke. Same bench under pine tree, pine tree that survived, that they thought fell in other dimension, but here still stands, old, thick, watching._

_They stop. Without meaning to. Both at same time, foot stops. Like the school has gravity, like building remembers them and pulls. Bugra's grocery bag handle snaps from how hard he squeezes, plastic tearing, apple falling, rolling. Beyza's hand tightens around the other bag until her knuckles turn white, until tomatoes squish._

_And in the corner, where Ahmet used to sit... exactly where Ahmet sat for 2 years alone with his dusty bag, with his white pants that were too white, with his patched shoes, looking at ground, counting ants, practicing disappearing... there is another kid. Sitting alone. Looking at the ground, as if questioning life itself, as if asking ground "why me?". Shoulders bent forward, trying to be smaller than he is, making himself tiny so bullies don't see, but tiny makes you more visible. Bag dusty, same cheap brand, shoes untied, one lace broken, tied in knot, uniform too big, like his mom bought one size larger to save money for next year, sleeves covering hands. A boy trying to make himself invisible. A boy practicing how to disappear. Efe. 15, maybe._

_Bugra feels his stomach drop to his feet, like on a rollercoaster, like elevator falling. Because he knows that posture, he knows it by heart. He saw it every day for 2 years and did nothing, and sometimes laughed. He saw Ahmet sit like that and he kicked his bag. He was part of why Ahmet sat like that. Beyza's eyes fill instantly, tears without permission, because she said "disgusting" to a boy who sat like that._

_3-4 kids come up to him. Same walk, same swagger, same hair gel, same fake deep voice. Same laugh they had, same laugh Buğra had at 16. The uniform changed, new model, blue darker, but the script didn't. Humans don't change scripts, only actors change, director same._

_KID 1 - the leader, hair gelled, voice already trying to sound manly, trying to be Buğra, trying to be alpha:_

"Yo Efe! Didn't we tell you never to be seen here again? Didn't we? Are you deaf or stupid? Get off our spot! This is our bench, freak! Freaks sit on the floor! On mud, like your shoes!"

_KID 2 - laughing, kicking Efe's bag away a little, not hard, just enough to show dominance, to get laugh from friends:_

"Look at his shoes hahaha, his mom bought them from the bazaar! 50 TL bazaar shoes! And bag, look at bag, from 2015!"

_Efe gets up without saying a word. No shouting, no crying, no "stop" or "please". He learned early that shouting makes it worse, that crying makes them record. He just stands, dusts his pants with small hands, hands dirty, small. But in his eyes... there is a man waiting for revenge. Silent, deep, dangerous, patient. A storm that hasn't broken yet, but clouds gathering. A file being saved for later, named "remember". Just like in Ahmet's eyes years ago, same day after kiss in square. The exact same look. The exact same dark, wet shine that looks calm but is ocean deep. The look that says "I will remember all of you, your faces, your laughs, your shoes, and one day..." Bugra had seen that look on that last day, when Ahmet looked back one last time before disappearing into plane trees, into fog, before becoming sphere._

_BEYZA - whispers, barely breathing, grabbing Bugra's arm, nails digging into skin through shirt, shaking:_

"Oh my god... Bugra... it's him... it's happening again... look at his eyes... Bugra do something... please do something... we didn't... we didn't back then... do something now..."

_Bugra clenches his fists, grocery bag broken on ground, apples rolling. He wants to run, to look away, to pull Beyza and kids and run to ice cream shop and pretend he didn't see, like he did for 7 years. Because he knows that look. He helped create that look once. He was Kid 2 once. He laughed once. He kicked once. He is guilty, and guilt makes you want to run. But his kids are watching, his son stopped racing and is watching Efe. His son is watching what his father will do._

_At that moment, Ahmet's last words echo in their ears, not as a memory, not as thought, but as a curse, as if wind carries his voice through the yard, through pine needles, through iron gate:_

_AHMET (FLASHBACK - whisper, cold, right next to their ears, 12:56 voice):_

"Do you really think killing me will end this game? You will think you are saved... you will marry, have kids, forget... buy BIM bags... but you will find yourselves inside a new game. The game never ends. It just finds a new player. It just changes the name. Yesterday Ahmet, today Efe, tomorrow someone else, tomorrow your son. Until someone says stop. Until someone kneels instead of kicks."

_Beyza bites her lip so hard she tastes blood, iron, to not cry in front of her kids, to not scream. Tears fill her eyes, spill, but she doesn't wipe, because wiping means she is crying and kids will ask why. While they think it's happening all over again, while the loop restarts, while history copies itself like homework..._

_A big, muscular kid from the crowd notices. Senior year, 18, jersey number 10, basketball team captain, shoulders wide, arms veiny, but eyes soft. He was watching the match, but now he's not watching the ball. He's watching Efe. Because he was Efe 3 years ago. He sat on same bench, same shoes, same bag. He knows the walk, the dusting pants move, the eyes._

_He steps in. Drops his basketball. BOOM, loud, echoing in yard, ball bouncing away, everyone looks, game stops. Silence like in Chapter 17 after tree._

_MUSCULAR KID / shouting, voice big, yard echoing, not to bullies, to whole yard, to teachers, to Buğra and Beyza:_

"Yo guys! Yo! What's up? Why are you bothering the kid? Four vs one? Wow, so cool! So brave! Four lions vs one ant! Should we clap?"

_One of the bullies turns around, scornfully, measuring him up and down, trying to act tough but voice shaking a little because number 10 is big, because number 10 is captain, because number 10 has friends._

_BULLY - trying to laugh:_

"Don't get involved man, mind your own business. This is between us and him. He stole our spot. We teach him manners. You go play ball."

_The muscular kid laughs. Not a funny laugh. An angry, disgusted, disappointed laugh. The laugh of someone tired of this shit, tired of seeing same movie every year._

_MUSCULAR KID - stepping closer, so close bully can see his sweat, can smell, invading space like bullies do, but for good:_

"It's okay when you mess with the kid, but it's not okay when I mess with you, huh? You are so brave when it's four against one. So tough. So cool. Get the fuck up and get lost! Is your power only enough for those weaker than you? Huh? Answer me! Is it? Look at me when I talk! Look at my eyes, not shoes!"

_Silence. The whole yard goes quiet. Even the teachers watching from window, sipping tea, go quiet, because they know this is not normal fight, this is something else. Even Bugra and Beyza hold their breath. Their kids stop running and watch, big eyes, learning._

_The bullies pause, look at his shoulders, his fists, his eyes that are serious, not playing, then slowly step back, mumbling curses like "whatever man" "faggot protector" "we will see you after school" but walking away fast. They don't run because they are scared of him physically. They step back because for the first time in their 16-year-old lives, someone said out loud what they were, named them, and shame is heavier than fear, shame makes you small._

_The muscular kid watches them go until they are far, until they sit on another bench and pretend to laugh loud to save face. Then he turns, exhales, shoulders drop. Goes to Efe. Doesn't tower over him, he knows towering is scary, he knows what it feels like to have big kid tower. He kneels. On one knee, like proposing, like knight, like equal. To be at his eye level. And touches his shoulder. Gently. Like a brother, like someone who knows dust on pants._

_MUSCULAR KID - voice now soft, completely different person, voice cracking a little, because he remembers:_

"You okay, bro? You okay? They didn't hurt you right? Come sit with me. My bench is bigger. And I have water. And I have extra sandwich, mom made two."

_Efe raises his head for the first time, eyes wet, not revenge now, confused. That revenge in his eyes... slowly fades, not because it disappeared forever, revenge doesn't disappear in one day, but because someone finally saw it before it became a monster, someone saw the human before the revenge, someone interrupted loop._

_MUSCULAR KID - still kneeling, picking up Efe's bag, dusting it, not caring his own knees dirty:_

"You want revenge on them right now, don't you? Don't lie to me. I know that look. I had it too. For two years I had it. I wanted to burn this school. I had notebook like you, with names. I wanted to kill all of them in my mind every night. I know."

_EFE - voice shaking, small, honest, tears finally falling because permission given, because someone asked honestly:_

"Yes. I want to... I want them to feel what I feel. Every night I feel... I want them to know..."

_MUSCULAR KID - nods, understanding, not judging:_

"Well, if you take revenge on these kids, what will happen? Tell me. Won't they try to take revenge on you next time? With older brothers? With cousins? And then you on them again with a knife? With a sphere? When does it end, Efe? Tell me, when does it end? Where does it stop? Does it stop when someone dies like Ahmet?"

_EFE - tears now, snot, wiping with sleeve that is too long:_

"Yes. But should what they did go unpunished? Should I not fight back? Should I just stay silent like everyone else did? Like everyone did to you? Like everyone did to Ahmet?"

_MUSCULAR KID - squeezes his shoulder, hard, grounding:_

"I'm not saying don't fight back. Fight back. Be strong. Get stronger than all of them. Study harder, run faster, lift, be better at everything. But when you get strong, never become one of them. Don't use your strength for pleasure like them, use it only to protect yourself. And to protect those weaker than you. Being strong is not to crush those weaker than you, it's to protect them. That's the difference between man and bully. If you choose revenge, you choose the easy path, like every human. Like Ahmet did. Like Buğra did. But if you choose to forgive, to be better, you achieve the hard thing. And that's not easy. That's what makes you a man. That's what makes you not them. That's how you break game."

_EFE - wiping nose with sleeve, looking at muscular kid's jersey:_

"So like I said before, shouldn't they pay for what they did? They kicked my bag..."

_MUSCULAR KID - smiles, tired, wise beyond 18, looking at Buğra and Beyza now, as if he knows them too:_

"Of course they will pay. But not in a monstrous way... in a human way. They will pay by seeing you happy without them. By seeing you didn't become them. By seeing you graduate, go to university, have a life, have kids, while they are still sitting on that same stupid bench trying to be tough at 25. That's the worst punishment for bullies. That you survived better than them. That you didn't need them. That you broke loop."

_Then he turns forward, as if looking directly through the fourth wall, directly at us, at Bugra, at Beyza, at the reader who bullied or was bullied, at the kid reading this in his room at 2 am with pillow over head._

_MUSCULAR KID - looking at us, at camera, at you:_

"Now tell me... which path will YOU choose? Revenge... or break the cycle? You reading this... you who laughed once... you who was laughed at once... which one?"

_Bugra and Beyza look at each other. In that moment, they understand everything, finally, 8 years later. Tears finally fall from Beyza's eyes, but this time not from guilt, from relief, from hope, because someone finally did what they didn't do 7 years ago, someone knelt. Bugra picks up fallen apple, wipes it on shirt, puts in bag, and for first time in 8 years, he walks towards bench, not away._

_Ahmet was right. The game wasn't over. The loop continued. One victim becomes a monster, creates a new victim, forever. That's the rule of universe if no one intervenes._

_But this time..._

_This time, another spectator joined the game. And broke the loop. Not with a punch. With a hand on a shoulder. Not with fire. With water. Not with "I will kill you" but with "come sit with me"._

_Because what ends bullying is not revenge._

_It's someone saying "stop."_

_It's one person kneeling instead of standing over._

_It's one person remembering that value is not measured in bags, in shoes, in phones, but in how you treat the kid with dusty bag._

_Camera pulls up. Drone shot, high, over Kazim Kaynak, over Denizli, over pine tree. Same schoolyard, but this time a kid is not sitting alone. Two kids are sitting side by side on the big bench, sharing earphones, one with jersey number 10, one with a dusty bag. One showing something on phone, both laughing a little, awkward laugh but real. The four bullies far away, small, irrelevant, already forgetting, already bored._

_In the far distance, Bugra's kids call them: "Mom! Dad! Come on! Ice cream is melting! Dad, apple!"_

_Bugra and Beyza walk away, but this time they don't look back with guilt. They look forward. Beyza holds Bugra's hand tight. Bugra holds grocery bags, one broken but holding. They walk towards their kids. Towards future. And Bugra, before leaving gate, turns back once, looks at Efe, and nods, small nod, as if saying "sorry" and "thank you" and "be better than me" at same time. Efe doesn't see, but muscular kid sees and nods back._

_The camera stays on the school. Bell rings. Kids flood yard, flood like before, like river. But this time, Efe is not alone in the flood. He is swimming with someone._

_The grapevine in Mehmet's garden is seen again; there are four black grapes and two green grapes on the vine. A black grape touches a green one, and following the contact, the grape begins to turn black; however, the other green grape next to it then touches that one, and the grape that had turned black begins to turn green again. The vine shivers in the wind, but it holds. And it grows. Because green is stronger when two together._

_BLACKOUT._

_THE END - But not really. The game restarts tomorrow at 08:00 with first bell. Question is, who will you be tomorrow? Kid 1, Efe, or Number 10?_
