Chapter 1:
Warriors Academy: The Kuroyuki Clan
Chapter 1: The Promise
The fire in the hearth flickered, as if it too were afraid. The room lay in dim shadow, smoke dragging along the ceiling like a dark foreboding. There, perched on the edge of the bed, a girl of about thirteen clutched her stuffed cat tightly to her chest, as if it were the last thing she had left in the whole world. Her shoulders shook; tears streamed down her cheeks and vanished into the soft fabric of her nightgown. She could hold it back no longer.
“I don’t want you to go, Papa…” she whispered, her voice breaking, pressing the toy hard against her breast. “I don’t want to be left alone. Why do you have to be the one to leave? Why can’t we all go together?”
The man stepped forward slowly, as if the very weight of time were pressing down on him. He sat beside her and slipped an arm around her; she clung to him in desperation, burying her face against his chest, soaking his shirt with her tears.
“I know, my little one… I know,” he said, his voice gentle yet heavy with anguish. “Believe me, if I could take you with me, I would do so without a single moment’s hesitation. But the place I am going is dangerous. There are wars, powers beyond anything you can imagine… and I cannot risk you.”
“What about Mama?” She looked up at him, her eyes wide and glistening, brimming with fear. “Is she truly alive? What if her family hurts you? What if they won’t let her come back with you?”
“She is alive,” he answered, though the words felt heavy in his throat. “I feel it here, deep inside me. But her family… they are powerful, and terrible. If I do not go, they will keep her apart from us forever. I must rescue her. I must bring her home.”
She hugged him tighter, trembling.
“Then go to her… but I ask you, Papa… I beg you…” She pulled back just enough to look him in the eye, tears spilling endlessly down her face. “If you cannot save her… if you see it is impossible… come back alone. I do not care. Nothing matters as long as you are safe. I do not want to lose you too. Promise me. Swear that you will return, no matter what.”
His heart felt as though it were shattering into a thousand pieces. He cupped her face in both hands, brushing away the tears on her cheeks.
“Mei…” He whispered her name with infinite tenderness and sorrow. “Mei, listen to me closely. I will do everything in my power to bring your mother back alive. But if things go wrong… if I cannot… yes, I will come back. I swear it by everything I hold dear. I will return to you. I will not leave you alone.”
“Do you truly promise?” she whispered, doubt and hope warring in her gaze. “Even if it costs you everything?”
“Even if it costs me everything.”
He lifted her into his arms, settled her against his chest, and carried her to the bed. He laid her down gently, pulled the blankets up around her, and placed the stuffed cat right beside her so she would not be without comfort. He stroked her hair again and again, lingering over each caress, as if he might etch every feature of her face into his memory forever.
“Now listen well, my child,” he said, leaning down to kiss her forehead. “While I am gone, Lilia will look after you. She will keep you safe, feed you, wrap you warm when you are cold. You are not alone.”
Mei frowned, unsettled.
“But Papa… who is she to you?” she asked, her voice small. “Is she your wife? What of Mama? Where does she stand if you love Lilia too?”
He sighed deeply, his eyes filling with sadness.
“It has been twelve years since your mother remained in that world,” he explained softly. “Twelve years during which I did not know if I would ever see her again. Lilia stood by me when I was most alone. She cared for me, gave me hope. I love her, yes. But your mother… I never stopped loving her. And now Lilia carries your little sister within her. In a few months she will be born. You will have someone to love, someone to protect — someone who will love you in return.”
Mei regarded him thoughtfully, then nodded slowly.
“I will love her so much, Papa. I will always protect her. But…” She lowered her gaze, uncertain. “How can there be room for both? Will they not hurt one another? Will you not be hurt yourself?”
He lifted her chin, making her meet his eyes.
“Leave that to me,” he said, steady yet tender. “It is my duty to guard the hearts I love. You need only promise me one thing — that you will be brave. That you will look after yourself and your little sister.”
“I promise,” she whispered. “But come back soon. Please.”
He leaned down and kissed her once more, this time on the cheek, lingering as if he might hold the moment forever. With a soft motion of his hand, he used his magic to close her eyes, and she drifted into a deep, peaceful sleep, her last thought one of trust in his vow.
He stood a moment longer watching her, tears finally spilling free. He did not know if he could keep every promise he had made. He did not know if he would return. And that uncertainty hurt more than any farewell.
He walked slowly down the dark hallway. In the main room, he found Lilia waiting beside a pentagram etched into the floor in faintly glowing symbols. She was pale, her eyes swollen from crying, hugging herself as if her very soul were cold. One hand rested over her belly, where their daughter grew.
“Do not go…” she pleaded, her voice cracking the moment she saw him. “Stay with us. Are we not enough? Do we not need you here?”
He stepped forward and drew her into his arms.
“You are everything to me. I never thought I would see you again, my beloved,” he said, kissing her forehead. “You saved me. When I arrived lost and broken, when Dina Kuroyuki was on the verge of destroying me, it was you who held me up. You who gave me shelter. And if I return, I swear none of that will change. You are my life now. Mei, you, and Shana… you are my family.”
“But if you do not come back…” She sobbed, clutching at his clothing. “What will become of us? Of the baby? Do not leave me alone, Yuichi… I beg you.”
“I am not leaving you,” he answered, his voice trembling. “I carry you with me — right here.” He pressed a hand to his chest. “Every step I take, I will think of you, of Mei, of the little one yet to come. That will give me the strength to return.”
She sank to her knees, wrapping her arms around his legs, stopping him from moving forward.
“No… do not step inside… please… Yuichi, do not abandon us…”
He lifted her gently, looked deep into her eyes, and kissed her with all the tenderness and desperation in his heart.
“I love you, Lilia. I will never forget you. Wait for me.”
He pulled away, every step an agony, and stepped into the center of the pentagram, raising one hand. The marking on the floor blazed to life in vivid green light, swelling until it filled everything around them.
“Yuichi!” She cried out, reaching toward him as if she might hold him back.
He looked at her one last time, his heart torn apart.
“I love you all three,” he managed to say, before the light swallowed him whole.
And he was gone.
Lilia remained alone in the room, kneeling on the floor, weeping inconsolably, speaking to the empty air.
“Come back… come back soon… do not leave us alone…”
Outside, the wind began to howl. And as yet, no one knew that the fate of all things was about to change forever.
