Chapter 2:
The Sword and The Staff: Letters to Lady Julia
The following is information on the 360-day, 12-month calendar, organized by the City of Magic after an extensive study of the celestial sphere, the orbital period of the Isle of Skye, and the seasons of Britannia. The celestial bodies move in seemingly magical perfection: a year is perfectly 360 days, the Moon takes exactly 30 days to orbit the planet, and all months have 5 weeks of 6 days, creating a calendar that is precisely exact. The 12 months are the following:
Month of Order (MoOr): The beginning of the year, and usually the coldest. There is an increase of blizzards, storms, and the Dragonshard Mountains seem to expand their freezing territory the fastest this month. It is therefore associated with Albion, the Dragon God of Order and Winter.
Month of Romance (MoRo): The month most closely associated with romantic love. The 14th day was a festival in Exeter founded by the Mother of Music, Lyrinyx, celebrating couples and the beauty of unity; a tradition still celebrated across all of Britannia.
Month of Julia (MoJ): On the fifteenth day of the 3rd Month, Lady Julia Augusta Alexandria was born. This month observes her and her sacrifice specifically, and on the 15th, a grand festival is thrown in Londinium in her honor. During the time of the Exetian Empire, this was the Month of Blossoming (MoB).
Month of Everlife (MoE): Though Spring is said to start on Lady Julia’s birthday, this is the month most associated with new growth and springtime. Everlife is associated with Cailleach, the Great Mother, who painted Britannia with life—including humanity.
Month of Motherhood (MoM): This month continues the honoring of Cailleach, but adds two additional figures to recognize: Lady Alexandria, Julia’s mother who was born on the 30th, and the Mother of Music, Lyrinyx, who was said to have ascended on the 1st to give humanity the gift of the arts. Of course, mortal mothers are recognized as well.
Month of Lightreign (MoL): The month where Summer begins, and where it contains the longest day of the year. This month is naturally associated with Lugh, the Blazing Sun.
Month of Chaos (MoC): The warmest month of the year, where even the Norselands gain a short period of warmth and recession of ice and snow. Due to the fact that the Hellands seem to expand the fastest this month, alongside increased volcanic and seismic activity, this month is associated with Ddraig, the Dragon God of Chaos.
Month of Aignech (MoA): After Chaos comes the King who slayed THEM. Enna Aignech was said to have been created in this month by the Great Mother, and of course, he was the first hero who slayed the Twin Dragons, Albion and Ddraig, in her honor. This entire month is associated with the great High King.
Month of Harvest (MoH): While no person or god is associated with this month, it is no doubt still important. This month is where most crops are ready for harvest across Britannia, and as such is the month with the most trading and interaction across humanity’s sparse cities. Humanity prays to all gods for guidance as they go on their travels.
Month of Fatherhood (MoF): To complement the Month of Motherhood, this month is most closely associated with Emperor Augustin, the First Great Emperor of Exetia, and of Exetia as a whole, which is often referred to as the Grandfather of Britain. Of course, fathers are celebrated as well.
Month of Remembrance (MoRe): Most closely associated with Odin, the God of Memory. Though HE is technically a foreign god, HE has existed long enough in Britannia that HIS presence has affected further than just the Norselands, and as such HE is recognized in this month. Before the year reaches its end, people use this month to remember the past—both the soon-to-end year, and their mistakes from before, and repent before the new year and the judgment of Shadow.
Month of Nightreign (MoN): The darkest month, the start of Winter, associated with the Goddess of Shadow, Scathach. SHE is said to observe all the souls who have made it to the new year and, if they have properly repented, grant them good luck in the next year. Those who had not led virtuous lives or did not repent are said to go missing in the shadows of the long nights.
