Chapter 27:
Naruto: Shadow Clone System
Mission update is live.
Get comfortable. The village is watching.

The water moved. It did not ripple the way puddles should ripple when boots passed near them. It rose. Metal came with it. Two masked shinobi unfolded from the road in opposite directions, water sheeting off dark clothes and clawed gauntlets. A bladed chain snapped between them with a wet shriek, already aimed for the man walking at the front as if ordinary mud could not murder anyone.
Kakashi did not look surprised. That helped less than Naruto wanted it to. The chain wrapped around their teacher and tore him apart. Sakura made a sound like the air had hit her. Tazuna screamed. Sasuke moved before the scream finished. Naruto's knees wanted the old scene, the one where shame froze him and poison made a lesson out of his hand.
He did not get to be old or new. He only got the next breath.
"Down!" Sakura shouted.
Not Naruto. Sakura. She caught Tazuna by the back of his cloak and yanked him off the road hard enough to put him in the mud. The bridge builder cursed, but a claw passed through the air where his neck had been.
Naruto's hand snapped to the cheap wire coiled at his belt. He had hooked one end into roadside brush three breaths earlier, pretending to adjust his pack. Paranoia was embarrassing until it kept someone breathing. He pulled. The wire flicked ankle-high across the road.
Not enough to stop a shinobi. Enough to ask a foot a question. The first attacker saw it and jumped. Sasuke was already there. Kunai rang against clawed metal. Sasuke's heel drove into the man's wrist, not clean, not graceful, but hard enough to bend the angle of the chain. He landed on one link and pinned it under his sandal for less than a heartbeat.
"Move him!" Sasuke snapped.
"I am!" Sakura snapped back, and shoved Tazuna behind her.
Better. Team. Ugly, loud, alive. The second brother broke toward the client from the blind side. Naruto made one clone. Only one. It appeared between Sakura and the blade, hands already up. The clone slammed shoulder-first into the attacker's arm. The claw tore through its chest and burst it into smoke.
Pain did not arrive as a wound. It arrived as a report written in nerves: cold metal, pressure, wrong angle, loss of air, then nothing. Naruto staggered but kept his feet. The filter caught the worst of it. The rest still punched under his ribs.
The masked shinobi turned his head toward Naruto. Interest. Bad.
"Jinchuuriki?" he hissed.
Sakura heard. Her eyes widened for one naked second. Then she stepped in front of Tazuna again. Naruto did not have time to be grateful. Gratitude belonged to people who were not currently being evaluated by enemy shinobi and friends at the same time.
He threw a kunai at the chain, not the man. The throw was bad. Too low, too hurried, half a lie pretending to be a tactic. Sasuke made it matter. He kicked the pinned link up and sideways. Naruto's kunai clipped metal instead of missing air. The chain jerked out of rhythm by an inch.
An inch was enough for Kakashi. The dead Kakashi became cut logs. The real one appeared behind the second brother and drove him into the ground with a controlled violence that made mud jump. The first brother tried to pull free. Sasuke released the chain before it could take his ankle with it.
Kakashi's hand blurred. One strike to the wrist. One to the throat. The man dropped choking, alive, and briefly wiser. Silence arrived too fast. Birds had fled. Rain had not started yet, but the road smelled like it wanted to.
Tazuna breathed from the mud in ugly pulls. Sakura held a kunai in both hands, blade between the client and the bound attacker. The weapon shook. She kept it up anyway. Sasuke stood with one foot muddy and his mouth set in a thin, furious line. He looked pleased with the move he had made and angry that the world had noticed.
Naruto looked at his own hand. No poison scratch. No dramatic oath written in blood. Different did not mean clean. The clone's last instant rolled under the filter again, delayed and mean. Naruto swallowed bile and tightened his fingers around the wire until the tremor had somewhere to hide.
Kakashi tied the two missing-nin before he spoke.
"Report injuries."
No book. No lazy curl in the voice. Sakura answered first because rules gave fear a railing. "Client conscious. No visible bleeding. Possible shock. I am uninjured."
"Sasuke?"
"Fine."
"Naruto?"
"Clone took the cut. Original intact."
Kakashi's visible eye sharpened. "Symptoms."
"Nausea. Headache. Manageable."
Tazuna stared at him from the mud. "You sent a clone into that?" Naruto looked at him. Several answers lined up. Because you lied. Because I knew where the blade would go. Because another version of this road punished me for freezing. Each one was either too true or too sharp to leave in the open.
"It was closer than I was," he said.
Tazuna looked away first. Guilt had a shape. So did fear. Kakashi crouched beside the prisoners. "Demon Brothers. Missing-nin from Kirigakure." Sakura went pale in a new way. Sasuke's eyes moved straight to Tazuna. There was the proof.
Not a story beat. Not a name from old knowledge. Two bound men in the mud, weapons still wet, rank cracked open in front of everyone.
"They targeted the client," Sakura said.
Kakashi nodded once. "Yes."
"Bandits do not hire missing-nin," Sasuke said.
Tazuna said nothing.
"This is not a C-rank," Sakura said.
No one corrected her. The puddles flattened into ordinary water as if the road wanted to deny responsibility. Naruto hated that. He hated more that part of him felt relief. They had survived. Better than the old path in some ways. Worse in others.
The word the attacker had used sat between Sakura's hearing and Naruto's skin. Jinchuuriki. Maybe she knew. Maybe she only knew enough for fear to start filling gaps. Academy rumors grew anywhere people left cruelty unattended. Kakashi stood. "We return to Konoha."
Sakura's shoulders dropped before she could stop them. Relief. Shame at the relief. Both honest. Sasuke's jaw tightened. "If we return, whoever hired them gets more time."
"If we continue," Sakura said, "we may be walking into the team they were sent ahead of."
"I know."
The answer was too flat to be arrogance. Sakura looked at him sharply. Naruto kept his mouth shut. Keeping silent was harder than throwing wire. The old road wanted him to argue. The bridge needed them to continue. A country had its throat under a rich man's boot. Names pressed against his teeth like contraband.
He bit down on all of them. Kakashi looked at Tazuna. "Explain." The bridge builder tried pride first. It failed him in front of the bodies in the mud.
"There is a man," Tazuna said. His voice scraped. "Gato. Shipping. Crime. He owns the boats, the trade routes, the men with clubs who decide who eats. My country is called Wave. If the bridge is finished, people can breathe. If it is not..."
His hand closed around the bottle. He did not drink.
"I could not afford the truth."
Sakura's face changed. Not forgiveness. Accounting.
"You bought a C-rank by hiding a B-rank problem," she said.
Tazuna flinched. "I bought what I could."
"With our lives."
He did not answer quickly enough to make it worse.
"Yes," he said.
Sasuke looked away, not softened, but re-aimed. His anger liked honest targets better than messy ones. Kakashi's gaze swept the road, the prisoners, the client, then the three genin. "This mission is misranked. Procedure says we return, report, and let the village reassign."
"Procedure is correct," Sakura said.
"Yes."
She hated the shape of that answer. "Then why are you still asking us?"
"I am not asking children to decide policy," Kakashi said. "I am informing shinobi that the facts changed under their feet."
Naruto felt the sentence land differently on each of them. Sakura heard responsibility. Sasuke heard permission. Naruto heard a trap and a door wearing the same face.
Kakashi continued, "No one continues because they feel guilty. No one continues because they want a harder fight. No one continues because the client made his desperation our problem. If we continue, I take command as a higher-rank mission until Konoha can be informed. If we turn back, we do it immediately and accept what happens on this road after us."
Tazuna looked smaller with every word. Sakura lowered the kunai a fraction. Not all the way. "Can Konoha be informed from here?"
"Not securely enough for a full reassignment. I can send a coded hawk once we reach the next relay point. That is hours away."
"And the prisoners?" Sasuke asked.
"Secured and hidden off-road until pickup. I will mark the location."
Naruto glanced at the trees. "Before any vote, interrogate them enough to know if another team is close." Kakashi looked at him for one long second.
"Reasonable."
"Try not to sound surprised."
"I am always surprised when you choose the option that reduces property damage."
Sakura huffed once. It was not laughter, but it kept the air from snapping. Kakashi dragged the Demon Brothers into the trees. What followed was quiet, efficient, and mostly hidden. No screaming. Somehow that made it worse.
Naruto stood near Tazuna and pretended the clone's death was not trying to repeat under his skin. Sakura stood on the client's other side, still between him and the road. Sasuke watched the tree line with the tense patience of someone hoping danger had the courtesy to show itself again.
After a while, Sakura said, "Jinchuuriki." The word did not shake. Naruto's blood went cold anyway. Sasuke's attention turned from ten steps away. Naruto kept his eyes on the mud. "You heard."
"Yes."
"Do you know what it means?"
"A container," Sakura said.
Not the whole truth. Enough truth to hurt. The part of him that still remembered being hated leaned away from her before he could stop it. Sakura saw. Her face tightened, not with fear this time.
"I am not asking on the road," she said.
That cost her. He heard it.
"Later?" he asked.
"Later."
Not permission. Claim. Kakashi returned before Naruto could decide what to do with that.
"No immediate second team," their teacher said. "Their orders were to eliminate the client before he reached Wave. Employer through intermediaries. If they fail, Gato likely learns soon."
Tazuna closed his eyes. The first drops of rain struck the leaves. Thin. Cold. Arriving from a sky that had been clear an hour ago. Kakashi looked at Team Seven. "Then we decide properly." No one moved.
"Tazuna tells the full truth," Kakashi said. "Sakura states the regulation. Sasuke states the tactical risk. Naruto states the risk he is trying not to steer us toward. I decide whether Team Seven is still a team I can responsibly command."
Naruto swallowed. Collective did not mean clean. Institutional did not mean painless. Rain darkened the mud around the fake puddles until they looked no different from the road. The future had stopped pretending to be a script.
