Chapter 28:

Client Lies

Naruto: Shadow Clone System

Mission update is live.

Get comfortable. The village is watching.

✦

No one voted quickly.

For once, Naruto took it as a decent sign.

The rain stayed light, more irritation than storm, tapping leaves and darkening the road until the fake puddles no longer looked special. The Demon Brothers lay bound under a tree with enough cord and chakra-suppression work to make escape unlikely. Kakashi had stripped their weapons, checked their mouths for hidden blades, and done several other things Naruto chose not to watch too closely.

Tazuna sat on a fallen log with his bottle in both hands. He had not drunk since the confession.

Sakura paced three steps one way, three steps back. Fear had not left her. It had found a uniform and called itself procedure.

"Mission regulations are clear," she said. "When rank is falsified and shinobi opposition appears, the team returns for reassessment."

Kakashi nodded. "Correct."

"Then why are we still discussing it?"

"Because correct is not always complete."

Sakura hated that answer. Naruto did too, honestly. It sounded like the kind of thing adults said right before making younger people carry weight the adults could later call duty. They were eighteen in this version of the world, old enough to sign forms and bleed for a village, not old enough to pretend a country was a simple moral exercise.

Sasuke stood near the tree line, arms folded. "If we return, the bridge builder may die."

"If we continue, we may die," Sakura said.

"We are shinobi."

"That is not an argument. That is a job title."

Naruto looked at her with new respect. Sasuke did too, though his face tried to deny it.

Tazuna's voice came rough. "I didn't have a choice."

Sakura turned on him. "You had the choice not to lie."

"And watch Wave starve?"

"You do not get to spend our lives because your country is desperate."

The sentence landed hard because it was true. Tazuna folded around it. For a moment, the bridge builder looked less like the rude drunk from the mission office and more like an exhausted craftsman who had counted money, graves, and days until none of the numbers gave him a clean answer.

"My grandson thinks heroes are idiots," he said.

No one spoke.

Tazuna stared at the mud. "He is eight. He already knows better than to hope out loud. My daughter stopped looking at the sea because Gato owns everything that crosses it. Men I grew up with bow to hired thugs so their families can eat one more week." His hands tightened around the bottle. "So yes. I lied to shinobi because I could not buy the truth."

Sakura looked away.

Not convinced. Affected. There was a difference, and it mattered.

Naruto could have used the silence. Push now. Tell them rules failed people. Tell Sasuke a real fight waited. Tell Kakashi the bridge mattered more than clean paperwork. All of it would have sounded close enough to courage to hide the manipulation.

He kept his mouth shut until the desire passed.

Kakashi watched him do it, which was becoming inconvenient.

"Naruto," Kakashi said. "You suggested information before choice. We have some."

"Some," Naruto agreed.

"Enough for a recommendation?"

The rain slid down the side of Naruto's face. Cold water. Damp collar. A clone's death still sitting under his ribs like a bruise the skin refused to show. His right hand wanted to form a seal. Habit now. Comfort, maybe.

He did not let it.

"We keep going," he said.

Sakura's jaw tightened. Naruto lifted a hand before she could speak. "Not because the client lied. Not because Sasuke wants a fight. Not because I'm pretending this is noble. We keep going only if Kakashi-sensei says this is no longer training and takes command like it."

Sasuke frowned. "He is already in command."

"No," Naruto said. "He has been teaching. Those are different."

The air changed. Even the rain seemed to lower its voice. Sakura stopped pacing. Kakashi folded his book and put it away.

"Explain."

The word was not lazy.

Naruto chose each sentence with care. "During D-ranks, you let us make mistakes. During the bell test, you let us lose. Today, you let the ambush open because you could handle the consequence. If we continue, you cannot let us learn by bleeding first. Not against shinobi hired to kill a civilian."

Sakura's eyes widened. Sasuke's expression sharpened. Tazuna looked between them, not understanding and understanding enough to be afraid.

Naruto kept going because some cliffs were already underfoot. "We need real formation, real rules, and real information. If you say run, we run. If you say leave the client and retreat, we obey. If you see something we cannot handle, you end the lesson before it becomes a funeral."

Kakashi's silence stretched.

Naruto felt sweat under the rain. Too much? Maybe. Better too much now than dead later because everyone politely pretended the mission was still a supervised classroom.

Kakashi looked at Sakura. "Your recommendation?"

She glanced at Naruto, then Tazuna, then the bound prisoners.

"If we continue," she said, "I guard the client. No chasing. No improvising unless ordered. I want threat briefings before we enter Wave, and I want the client to answer questions without drinking."

Tazuna winced.

Kakashi nodded. "Sasuke?"

"We continue."

"Reason."

Sasuke's mouth tightened, as if being asked to explain ruined the purity of decision. "The enemy has already seen our team composition. Returning gives them time to prepare a second attempt on the road or in Wave. They sent two missing-nin to kill one bridge builder quietly. Failure tells their employer the client has shinobi. Continuing under a jonin may be safer than retreating with the same exposed client and no secure report."

Sakura looked at him. Not because she agreed completely. Because the answer was not just pride.

Sasuke noticed and looked away.

Kakashi turned to Naruto last.

"We continue," Naruto said. "But the client stops deciding what we are allowed to know."

Tazuna nodded once. The motion looked scraped out of him.

Kakashi looked at the bridge builder. "Your employer."

"Wave's council, what's left of it. Unofficial. They pooled money."

"Gato's force."

"Thugs. Hired swords. Corrupt dockworkers. Some samurai deserters, maybe. I didn't know he had shinobi until..." Tazuna looked toward the Demon Brothers. "Until now."

"Bridge status."

"Nearly complete. A week of work, less if my crew stops hiding."

"Local shelter."

"My home."

"Family."

"Daughter. Grandson."

"Any militia?"

Tazuna laughed without humor. "Hungry fishermen with tools."

Kakashi absorbed it all without softening. Then he tied the Demon Brothers more securely, wrote a coded report, and pressed his thumb to a small summoning mark. The ninken that appeared was old, narrow-eyed, and unimpressed by rain, crime lords, or human stupidity.

"Konoha gets the report at the next chain," Kakashi said. "Until I receive orders, this becomes an emergency continuation under my command. The mission rank is no longer treated as C-rank for conduct. Tazuna-san, you are under shinobi direction. You do not negotiate route, pace, rest, or disclosure. If I order retreat, the discussion ends."

Tazuna swallowed. "Understood."

"Sakura."

"Client guard. Medical observation. Questions recorded."

"Sasuke."

"Left flank. Enemy approach and terrain."

"Naruto."

He braced himself.

"Right flank. Clone use by count and purpose. If you suspect a threat from prior information, you report suspicion. You do not wait until you can prove it in a way that sounds sane."

Sakura went very still.

Sasuke's eyes narrowed, not in disbelief, but in the way he looked at a weapon whose edge he had not identified.

Naruto's throat dried. "Understood."

"No," Sakura said.

Kakashi looked at her.

She did not back down. Her knuckles whitened around the kunai. "I understand the order. I do not understand what he knows."

Naruto felt the old habit reach for evasion. Joke. Shrug. Let the road move.

He made himself stay.

"I know patterns," he said. "Some of them are wrong already."

Sakura's face tightened. "Patterns like the puddles?"

"Yes."

"Patterns like the word that man used?"

Jinchuuriki.

The rain seemed to pause around it even though she did not say it aloud.

Naruto looked at the mud between his sandals. "That word is not a road conversation."

"I know," Sakura said. Her voice shook once, then steadied. "I am not asking on the road. I am telling you the road does not erase it."

It was not forgiveness. It was not accusation clean enough to fight. It was a marker placed between them for later, and Naruto hated how much better that was than silence.

"Later," he said.

"Later," she answered.

Sasuke watched both of them with a sharp, private irritation. "If he has threat information, I do not care whether it is embarrassing."

"You care about everything that gives someone an advantage," Sakura said.

"Correct."

"Try caring before it turns into a corpse."

His eyes cut to her.

For one second Naruto thought Sasuke would snap back. Instead, Sasuke looked at the prisoners, then at Tazuna, and said, "Then he reports early."

Not gentle. Not friendly. Still something the team could stand on.

Kakashi let the exchange stand. "Enough for now."

Naruto nearly smiled at the theft of a phrase Sakura clearly disliked from the source of it, but Kakashi's voice had no humor in it.

"This is the last moment anyone on this road treats uncertainty as private property," their teacher said. "The client lied because he was desperate. Naruto withheld because he was afraid of sounding impossible. Sasuke holds conclusions until they become a blade. Sakura trusts procedure until procedure fails in front of her. All of those habits can kill someone now."

No one had an answer that made them look better.

Maybe that explained why it worked.

Kakashi rose. "We move."

Formation changed immediately. Kakashi took point, close enough to vanish if needed. Sasuke moved left, where the trees leaned toward the road. Naruto took right, with enough room for one clone and not enough to expose the client. Sakura stayed behind Tazuna, eyes moving constantly now that fear had work to do.

For an hour, no one spoke except to call terrain.

Mud sucked at sandals. Rain darkened sleeves. Tazuna's breathing grew rough, but he did not ask to stop. Maybe guilt had stamina. Naruto watched every puddle until puddles stopped meaning water and started meaning accusation.

At the first rest, Sakura approached him while Sasuke scouted twenty yards ahead and Kakashi stood exactly close enough to hear if they forgot he could.

"I'm angry," she said.

"I noticed."

"Do not make a joke."

He closed his mouth.

She looked at the road behind them. "I understand why you didn't say, 'There are shinobi hiding in the puddles.' I do. But if your strange warning signs give you a bad feeling, we need to know."

"I know."

"No. You agree. That is different from knowing."

That hit.

He nodded slowly. "Then I am learning."

Sakura studied his face for the sales pitch. She did not find enough of one to reject.

"Keep learning," she said, and returned to Tazuna before either of them could make it easier than it was.

Near evening, the trees thinned and the smell of water grew.

Not river.

Bigger.

Salt threaded through rain. The Land of Waves waited ahead, gray and wounded beneath the sky. Tazuna stopped at the rise and looked toward home. His face broke before he rebuilt it. Sakura saw. Sasuke saw too.

Kakashi's expression remained hidden, but his posture changed by one quiet degree.

The mission was still wrong. The client had still lied. Wave still needed them.

All three facts stood together, inconvenient and true.

Naruto adjusted his pack and looked toward the mist beginning to gather over the water. The remembered road ahead had already changed shape under his feet. Team Seven had chosen to continue with eyes open, orders named, and consequences waiting.

That did not make the choice clean.

It made it theirs.
