Chapter 2:
Why aren't you cursed?
[Samantha's POV]
Sitting in my first class next to Cedar. I can feel more and more tired and eventually start to yawn.
"Woah girl. Did you not get any sleep? Normally you are practically vibrating in your seat with energy." Cedar the vegetation fae claims. He flutters his auburn wings a little.
This is only my first week of school in this world but I guess normally I am bouncing my leg in this class.
"I," I try speaking but yawn again, "I got enough sleep, I think. Maybe the run this morning got to me."
"You were wheezing pretty bad when you got to the gates." Cedar comments.
"Asthma sucks." I say resting my head on the table.
Little did I know I drifted to sleep. Cedar shook me awake and we headed to our second period together. There too I fell asleep. This time though I was sitting with Purcella, Ginger and Bell. Ms. Eva came over to wake me.
"Look at me child." The hidden gorgon says tilting my head back. "Did you use a lot of mana yesterday?"
"Ummm yesterday." I say sleepily. "Oh I hunted man eating lizards yesterday. I," *yawn*, "got thrown into a tree by the one's tail."
"Did you break anything?!" Ms. Eva starts pulling my arms.
"The tree?" Since Hazel did say I dented it.
The class erupts in laughter. Ms. Eva though only sighs and lets me be. "Your body must be using its mana to heal something inside of you. Take it easy today alright?"
I nod my head in agreement even though I felt fine this morning til I got to school.
Til I got to school.
I grab ahold of the pendant Purcella gave me. The stone was warm to the touch and I felt myself drift to sleep.
I'm standing in the dark. Faint soft whispers are coming from every direction. I turn every which way trying to figure out what way is clearer. I try taking a step but my feet are in tar. Slowly I begin to sink every time I struggle. The whispers seem to get angrier.
"More. I need more. Give me mana. I must avenge my people. My people I'm sorry I was weak and fell in battle. I'll show them." A woman whispers.
"Enough." Aba's voice commands.
A loud noise and what seemed like the world giving out below me, wakes me up. I blink as I stare up to see Terry the orge being scolded by Ms. Eva. Til Cedar, Purcella, Bell and Ginger all get in my face to see if I'm alright. With help from Cedar I sit up from the rubble of my desk.
"What?" I ask looking around groggy.
"We totes tried everything to wake you. Then Terry hit your desk way too hard." Purcella explains. "Are you alright?"
The three girls are all exchange concerned looks at each other.
"I'm fine. I'm sorry everyone." I can feel tears forming from embarrassment and just having everyone looking at me.
"Hey as long as you're alright. It's fine right?" Cedar says placing his hand my shoulder.
"How about you go to the nurses office?" Ms. Eva says kneeling beside us.
"We can take her." The girls all say in unison.
"Good. Everyone else get to your next class. Terry." Ms. Eva states.
"Yes?" Terry timidly replies.
"Go inform the maintenance crew of the desk please."
"Yes. Ma'am." Terry responds as we all make our way out of the class.
Once I got to walking around I started to feel better. I tell the girls this and they all agree that we shouldn't bug the nurse if I'm feeling fine. We get to class late and Ms. Lidia drags us all right outside for the testing. Purcella, Ginger and Bell are told to meet us outside once they change.
"Alright class. Today we will work on channeling mana. Now mana is all around the world. Most species naturally produce it, the stuff is in the air, ground and even in the parallel spiritual realm if you're really good at tapping into it. So today we will be testing everyone's mana before trying your hand at channeling outside mana. Now don't be upset if you can't get it today. Some of you have a hard time using mana to begin with because you are more physical strength and only need the mana for boosting that strength." Ms. Lidia explains.
"Now for those that know how to channel mana, please do not. I want to demonstrate how effective it is for some of you." Says Ms. Lidia.
The teacher goes around to each student with a blue glass orb that displays the amount of mana one has. The orges and orcs are around 200-250. The magic users are around 500-550 outside of Bell who is the highest at 573. Then Ms. Lidia comes to me and the orb shows a number 1.
"HOW ARE YOU STANDING?!" Ms. Lidia shouts.
"Uuuuuuuh. I.d.k?" I say with a smirk.
Then my single point went to two.
She sighs, "did you just use it up?"
"I don't think so? I'm new to this mana thing."
"Alright well lets see how the channeling goes. Maybe you just need a recharge?"
Ms. Lidia goes into the lesson of feeling your own mana and how you can feel the threads of mana in the air and ground. Then if you are open to the spirit realm and follow a thread you can easily pull mana from the spirit realm since there is an abundance there. That is why there are threads in the first place since they leak through to this side. The technic is hard to do during battle since you must concentrate but if you can find reprieve in battle it could save you and your comrades lives.
All of us begin to meditate. With that explanation and me feeling drained as is, I could feel so many threads around me. I slowly start to tap into them mentally and slowly I start to feel less groggy but with each new strand I grab I feel as if the last one is already used up. With hunger for mana I pull on more and more threads. Then I find a large thread and mentally follow it. A push and pull feeling comes over me as I try to build the mana inside of me.
I keep fighting to keep the mana. Then I feel a strange familiar power from above me that I tap into. Overwhelming mana flows into me. I go from feeling off to normal to ready to burst in meer seconds. Til I felt all my energy drain in an instant.
"Finally." A slightly familiar female voice rings in my head.
I open my eyes and see a woman with wings before me. She has long blonde hair with a golden leaf crown. A pure white long dress. Her eyes were so sharp they sent a shiver down my back.
"Thanks, little one. You were actually a decent host." She grins. "Now I can avenge my people."
