Chapter 3:
Why aren't you cursed?
[Hazel POV]
Once at the school I walk around to see where the compass is leading me. After pacing in front of some classrooms, I gage that the compass is pointing past them. So back outside I go.
Walking I continue to follow the needle til I'm near to Ms. Lidia's class. Sure enough the needle is extra sensitive to even the slightest hand moment. There in the mix is Samantha channeling mana.
"Oh dear." I mutter as my heart sinks with dread.
I try to scream for everyone to run and take cover but I'm too late. The spirit manifests into a physical form. The half angel is talking to Samantha too quiet for me to hear. Yet the blood lust the angel harbors can be felt by all if you look at the kid's faces.
Pulling the dagger from it's sheath, I charge for the angel. I yell for everyone to get away. I nearly lost Samantha due to my carelessness before. There is no time for me to not give it my all now. Ms. Lidia commands the students to get back into the school and to inform the teachers of a manifested spirit. Only Samantha doesn't listen.
"You are not as strong as them. You mixed blood." Queen Raeval comments sending me flying with a flick of her wrist.
I drop the knife from the initial impact and Samantha scoops it up holding it to the Queen's neck.
"You are still weak. You pathetic toy." Queen Reavel flicks her wrist again.
Samantha tumbles through the grass. The rest of the class has taken shelter in the school by now. Ms. Lidia channels mana into her fists but is knocked away easily. Samantha and I are both recovered enough to make a run at the queen. I flank left and she flanks right.
"Too slow." A mana surge hits me and Samantha sending up back again.
"How the heck?" I mutter.
"Why?" Samantha yells at the spirit.
The half angel turns her head towards the girl. Looking down at Samantha she repeats Samantha's question. "Why?"
"Why are you doing this?" Samantha winces as she straightens up.
"I, Queen Raeval, protected my people for generations. Many came seeing my land. I protected them. Made sure they had food, shelter and clean rivers. Neighboring kingdoms though thought they were stronger than me and I wiped out their armies single handedly. Till one day a man walked up alone and challenged me. Only he wasn't alone. He summoned strong demons that tore at me and wore me down before he delivered the fatal blow." Raeval explains. "So he must pay."
"That man died the same day you did. A thousand years ago." Ms. Lidia speaks up.
The queen turns to her. "What did you say?"
"He's dead." Lidia says firmly. "Summoning strong demons like he did, did a nasty backlash to him physically. He never made it off the battlefield."
"Did he have children?"
"None were ever listed."
"I suppose even if he does have descendants then punishing them for a crime they didn't commit would be rude." Queen Raeval says looking up at the sky. "What happened to my kingdom?"
"It's still there actually. Your sacrifice inspired many of your people. An army was formed, you advisors worked in a rotating groups of three, and they refused to change the base laws." Lidia explains.
"If thats the case. I'm sorry for being rude." Queen Raeval bows lightly to us. Then she looks Samantha over. "You have potential. Spar with me when you get older."
With that the half angel leaves by flying to her kingdom. Relief flows over me thanks to Ms. Lidia for the history buff save.
I smack Samantha upside the back of the head.
"Yeow!" She cries.
"First, hand over that necklace." I hold my hand out for the girl to do as I said. "Second did you feel nothing off today?"
"I was extra tired." She shrugged.
"Last question. Who gave this to you?" I lean in to hear the answer better.
"Ahh umm err." Samantha looks at her hands.
"No students here are named 'ahh umm err'" I say holding firm.
"They're girls from my class but I don't want them in trouble. I have to fit in here Hazel." Samantha pleads.
"What they did was dangerous!" I snap.
The girl looks down and gets real quiet.
"I'm sorry are you alright?"
Samantha nods slowly.
Other facilities start to pour out of the school now that the danger is gone. A healer rushes over to Samantha. While principal Martin walks up to Lidia and me.
"Office. Now." He demands.
I reluctantly follow him and Lidia to his office. After some brief arguing and principal Martin agreeing happily to my terms of him finding the girls responsible before I do, I make my way back to town.
Anger courses through me. My muscles are trembling from the building adrenaline for what I'm about to do. From everyone's expressions and side steps to move out of my way, I must have a nasty scowl on my face. That is until I walk up onto Mrs. Bakers front porch. I put on a fake smile and gently knock on the door.
"Oh Hazel! Come on in dear." Mrs. Baker smiles at me with her glasses making her eyes look 5 times bigger than they should be.
"Hi Mrs. Baker. Is Felix home? I'm having trouble with a spell equation." I smile sweetly.
"Oh he is in the basement. Will you want any cookies?" She waddles to the kitchen.
"Maybe on my way out as a reward if I can understand the problem." My grin is getting harder to hold.
"You have always been so disciplined. Good for you dear." The old lady says getting things around for tea.
"Thank you. Hopefully this will only be a minute." I say making my way down stairs.
The basement is black from Felix killing the lights.
"Nice try." I say flipping the switch on.
The basement is lined with shelves of potions and ingredients. Free standing shelves and tables are in the middle covered in science looking tubes, vials and beakers.
Felix flips the lights off from the other side of the room. I pull out some throwing knives from my enchanted bag. Flipping the switch on from my end I have a clear shot to the other switch. Flicking quickly I land my knife centimeters away from Felix's hand.
"No use hiding." I growl.
Felix slowly comes out looking scruffy as ever.
"Where are your cursed objects?" I say through gritted teeth.
Felix points to a few boxes on a shelf. I grab one and read the paper attached.
[Causes wearer to loose vision.]
"Put it on." I say handing him the box.
He hesitates. And I repeat my words. He then puts on the cuff links. I push an empty beaker onto the ground and watch Felix flinch.
"I almost lost my trainee today because someone had to sell a mana sucking spirit to some teens. And you're going to tell me who they are." I say sliding another beaker across the table.
"Okay okay okay. Their names are Purcella, Ginger and Bell." Felix cries.
"They give you a reason?"
"A boy. T-there is a boy n-named Cedar."
"That kid again." I grumble. "That's all I needed. Next time though. Think twice or you will find yourself cursed worse." I say leaving the basement.
On the way out, Mrs. Baker gave me a few cookies. Even enough for Samantha, who I will have to reconcile with.
