Good night, my old friend

5 min stories to keep you company

«Shhhhreeek»

I opened the curtains in one go.

Sunlight swallowed the room whole.

“Grandpaaa” - I called him from in front of the window. “It’s morning. Time to wake up and smile”.

“I’m awake Mallow, thank you” - said the old man.

//

The girl turned back and smiled.

For her, everyday started with her waking up Grandpa.

Suddenly, she ran towards her grandpa and threw herself on top of the bed.

“Ouf”

The girl giggled and buried her face onto the sheets. The old man simply pet her head slowly.

-

“Grandpaaaaa” - I called him from the kitchen. “It’s time to eeeeattt. Foooddd’s readddyy”.

“Coming, coming” - replied the old man from his bedroom.

-

“Graaaandpaaa” - called the girl from the doorstep.

“What is it, my dear?” - said the old man.

“I’m going to work, I’ll come back soon” - said the girl. “Be sure to tuck yourself up properly”.

“I will, my dear” - replied the old man. “Be careful on the way home”.

The girl smiled and left the house.

That was the last time she saw Grandpa.

//

Grandpa was a very old man when I met him.

His eyes were so tiny, they always looked closed. His eyebrows mostly covered them anyways.

He had a very long white beard. It looked like Santa Claus’. His moustache was also very long and white.

My dear grandpa was always working.

He was a diviner.

He was called “Oracle”.

Even since I was little, I could always see him sitting in front of his crystal ball.

I loved seeing the purple miasma dancing inside the sphere.

Grandpa always scolded me softly.

“Don’t get too close, my dear. It’s not a toy”.

Despite his warnings, I would always try to get my face as close as I could. It was a pretty sight.

Day after day, night after night. Grandpa would be always working.

Everybody loved his work.

I thought I should follow his steps and become a great oracle too. That’s why, I worked hard and became his apprentice.

Everyday was fun.

Slowly, everybody started asking for grandpa less and less.

“There are better supporters out there” - they all said.

That was my grandpa’s role.

To support others.

That’s what made grandpa happy.

-

Almost 10 years later now, almost nobody remembers grandpa.

“Oracle? What’s that?” - I heard somewhere.

“Oracle? Of course I know him. He helped me a lot when I was young” - I heard somewhere else.

Oracle had indeed become a legend.

Me?

I’m just following into Grandpa’s footsteps.

Despite my hard work, it seems his shoes are too big for me to fill.

Even so, I’ll keep working hard.

Good night, Grandpa.

Good night, my old friend. I hope you can rest now.

*Oracle and Mallow are both "supporter cards" with the same effect. Oracle used to be a legend. Everyone liked him.

However... No one liked Mallow... Her effect was now too easy to counter, and so she was soon replaced.
