Water Prison

Kakashi was trapped in a ball of water, and the world narrowed to the hand holding him there. Zabuza stood with one arm buried in the prison, fingers spread through the jutsu that kept their teacher suspended. His other hand rested near the hilt of the massive sword planted in the mud. Mist curled at his feet. The water clone he had made stood between Team Seven and the real Zabuza, smiling with the same killing intent in a cheaper shape.

Naruto had pieces, not an answer. A giant shuriken on Sasuke's back. Zabuza's fixed arm. Kakashi's open eye through the water, alive and furious. Sakura with Tazuna behind her, both too close to the ditch, both inside killing range if the clone decided the client mattered more than sport.

The old shape of the fight pressed at Naruto from somewhere behind panic. Throw. Hide. Transform. Force the release. It sounded clean only because hindsight lied after the blood was dry. Here, the mud sucked at his sandals, his ribs still remembered the road, and Zabuza had already watched him make clones with restraint.

A copied trick would not stay clever just because it had once worked. The water clone moved first. Sasuke met it with kunai and fury. Metal rang. The clone's forearm loosened into water around the block, reformed, and smashed into his ribs. Sasuke slid back, caught himself, and went in again before pain could become visible enough to insult him.

Sakura dragged Tazuna farther behind a tree. She did not look away from the fight. That mattered. Fear had both hands on her throat, but she still checked roots, trunk, ditch, and the space a person needed to fall without crushing the client under it. Naruto made two clones.

One went low. One went right. The water clone cut the low one apart without turning fully. The return hit Naruto behind the eyes: wet ground, split pressure, no blood because water did not need blood to teach pain. The right clone threw a shuriken wide. Zabuza's real eyes shifted from behind the prison.

He noticed the width. Of course he did.

"The brat with too much chakra," the missing-nin said. "Gato did not mention you were interesting."

"Common oversight," Naruto said.

His voice cracked only a little. The clone appeared in front of him. Naruto barely blocked. Barely meant the kick still lifted him off the ground and threw him into mud hard enough to empty his lungs. Sakura shouted his name. Sasuke used the opening to drive a kunai through the clone's shoulder.

Water splashed. Reformed. The clone caught Sasuke by the collar and hurled him aside. The gap was obscene. This was not a chunin hiding in puddles. This was not Kakashi pressing them until they learned. This was a copy of a jonin-class killer keeping children busy while the real one held their safety underwater.

Naruto pushed himself up. Across the mud, Sasuke was already looking at the folded demon wind shuriken on his back. Naruto looked once at Zabuza's prison arm. Sasuke's eyes flicked to him. Yes, then. Not enough. Not yet. A shape two scared genin could maybe make before a monster stepped on it.

Naruto formed a seal under the cover of mud and his own coughing. A clone appeared low behind him and changed into a second folded shuriken. The weight landed wrong in his hand, too warm, too alive, too aware of Zabuza's attention. Zabuza's eyes narrowed. Too early.

Naruto knew it the instant he saw the look. Sasuke threw first anyway. The real demon wind shuriken unfolded with a metallic snap and spun low toward Zabuza. The missing-nin did not move his prison hand. He tilted his head, almost amused, and the water clone stepped into the line.

The weapon tore through the clone and burst it across the road. For one breath, the road cleared. Naruto threw the transformed clone high. Wrong angle. Too much hope in it.

"Cute," Zabuza said.

His free hand rose and caught the shuriken out of the air. Fingers closed around Naruto's transformed spine. The jutsu shuddered. The part of Naruto inside the metal shape wanted to flinch back into skin. He held the form because letting go would waste Sasuke's throw and maybe Kakashi's last useful breath.

Zabuza squeezed. Pain flashed white. Sasuke moved through the mud, not forward, sideways. Wire slid from his left hand, nearly invisible in mist. The first shuriken had not been thrown to hit. It had curved behind Zabuza, pulled by wire wrapped around the ring. Zabuza saw the correction a heartbeat late.

Late did not mean helpless. He twisted the captured shuriken in his grip. Naruto's transformed shape slammed sideways, knocking the wire line off by inches. The returning blade missed the prison arm and skimmed the water sphere instead. Kakashi's eye sharpened behind distortion. Missed. Sasuke's face went blank with rage.

Sakura moved. No one had told her to. Three shuriken struck the mud at Zabuza's feet, not at the man. Mud jumped. Water splashed. His stance shifted by the smallest ugly margin, just enough that the wire pulled true when Sasuke threw his weight backward with a hiss of pain.

Naruto dropped the transformation before Zabuza could crush it apart. He hit the ground as himself, rolled under the swing of the free hand, and grabbed Zabuza's wrist with both arms. Not strong enough. Never strong enough. Just weight. Just timing. Just one stupid refusal to let a copied trick stay copied when the enemy had already read it.

The demon wind shuriken cut across the arm buried in the prison. Not deep. Enough. Zabuza snarled and withdrew his hand. The Water Prison collapsed. Kakashi fell through water and hit the ground running. Everything changed.

The air split open. Kakashi moved like the lazy man had been a story told by someone who wanted to survive him. He drove Zabuza back from the students with strikes too fast for Naruto to follow cleanly. Zabuza met him with the sword. Steel screamed. Water rose.

Naruto tried to stand and almost went down again. Heat stirred behind the seal, delighted by fear and pain. The fox offered fire like a hand extended over a cliff. No. He bit the word into the inside of his cheek until copper steadied him. Sakura reached him first. "Can you move?"

"I can complain."

"Move first."

She hauled him by the back of his jacket without waiting for permission. Tazuna was still alive behind the tree, pale and soaked and staring at the place Kakashi had been held. Sasuke stood between them and the fight, breathing shallowly, one arm tight against his side.

"Ribs?" Naruto asked.

"Shut up."

"Same."

Sasuke's mouth twitched. Pain killed it before it became anything softer. Kakashi and Zabuza's fight became water and speed. Jutsu signs blurred. Water Dragon. Copied hands. Impact. The road exploded into spray. Naruto watched, humbled in a way that did not feel like defeat. This was the ceiling for now.

Not forever. Now. One wrong breath at that level could erase all three of them and the client they were supposed to protect. Ambition would lie about that later. It always did. He needed the mud on his hands to remember the truth first. Kakashi changed rhythm.

The ground broke. Ninken burst from below and pinned Zabuza in place, teeth and chakra and humiliating teamwork. The missing-nin strained, furious and bleeding. Kakashi stood before him with copied killing intent gathered into one hand.

"It's over," Kakashi said.

Lightning did not appear yet. The promise of it lived in his posture. Senbon flashed. Zabuza jerked. Needles struck his neck. He went slack. A masked hunter-nin landed on a branch above them, small and still in the mist. Naruto's chest tightened. The mask hid the face. The voice, when it came, was polite enough to sound wrong beside the senbon, mud, and broken road.

"Thank you," the hunter said. "I have been tracking Zabuza for some time."

Sakura sagged with relief. Sasuke did not. Kakashi looked up. Naruto kept his mouth shut so hard his teeth hurt. The senbon placement, the stillness, the careful way the hunter's hand hovered near Zabuza's neck before touching him, all of it scratched at the part of him that hated neat endings.

A thought came with a name attached. He did not let the name leave his mouth. Knowing enough to suspect was not the same as knowing enough to act. Exposing the hunter here might save one problem and create three worse ones. Maybe Kakashi had seen it too. Maybe he had not. Maybe Naruto was wrong because fear wanted every shadow to be familiar.

The hunter lifted Zabuza with careful strength. Too careful for a corpse. Kakashi's eye narrowed by the smallest amount. Then he let the hunter leave. The masked figure vanished into mist with Zabuza. Silence returned in pieces. Sakura lowered her kunai with shaking hands. "Is it over?"

Kakashi did not answer fast enough. Sasuke looked at Naruto. He had noticed the silence too. Naruto wiped mud from his face and chose the smallest truth that would not rot.

"No."

Tazuna made a faint sound. Sakura's eyes closed for half a second. Kakashi's visible eye rested on Naruto.

"Reason?"

"Hunter-nin usually dispose of remains on site, right?"

The air changed again. Sakura looked at Kakashi. Sasuke's eyes sharpened. Kakashi said nothing. Naruto let ignorance cover the rest. "Academy class. I paid attention sometimes."

"Sometimes," Sakura echoed, suspicious even while scared.

Kakashi's eye curved without humor. "We move to Tazuna's house. Assume Zabuza may still be alive." Tazuna whispered something that might have been a prayer. Kakashi took one step, then swayed. Sakura moved. Naruto moved too slowly. Sasuke caught Kakashi's sleeve from the other side with a grimace he failed to hide.

Their teacher looked annoyed at gravity.

"Sharingan overuse," he said.

"Convenient timing," Naruto muttered.

Kakashi's eye found him.

"Joke later. Walk now."

That sounded worse than a lecture. They carried him between them, awkwardly, because legendary shinobi apparently weighed more after nearly drowning in a jutsu. Sakura guarded Tazuna. Sasuke pretended his ribs did not exist. Naruto pretended the heat under his skin had fully faded. It had not.

From somewhere deep behind the seal, the fox laughed without sound. The road to Tazuna's house stretched ahead through mist. They had freed Kakashi. They had changed the fight. Zabuza still lived. Someone masked had seen Naruto choose silence. Wave had truly begun.
