Chapter 31:

Safe House

Naruto: Shadow Clone System

Mission update is live.

Get comfortable. The village is watching.

Tazuna's house stood on wooden stilts above wet ground, stubborn in the way poor homes had to be.

The boards had been repaired with three kinds of wood. The roof sagged toward the water. Fishing nets hung under the porch, patched so often the original thread looked outnumbered. Smoke climbed from the kitchen chimney, thin but warm, and for one exhausted second Naruto understood why Tazuna had lied.

Not forgiven. Understood.

Kakashi's weight shifted against his shoulder.

"You are heavier than your personality suggests," Naruto muttered.

"I contain mysteries," Kakashi said, voice weak enough to ruin the joke.

Sasuke, supporting the other side, grimaced. "You contain river water."

Sakura opened the door before either of them dropped their teacher through it.

A woman turned from the hearth.

Tsunami looked like someone had learned gentleness without being allowed softness. Dark hair tied back. Sleeves rolled. Eyes moving from Tazuna to Kakashi to mud, weapons, blood, breath, and the way Sasuke hid his ribs by standing too straight.

She did not scream. Screaming was for people who still thought shock deserved ceremony.

Her hands tightened once around the ladle. Then she set it down, wiped both palms on her apron, and moved.

"Inside," she said.

"Tsunami," Tazuna said, and all the anger he had carried on the road fell out of his voice.

They got Kakashi to the side room. He tried to wave them off and almost slid from Naruto's grip when his legs refused the performance. Sakura caught his wrist, checked his pulse, then pointed at the bed.

"There. Head toward the inner wall. Naruto, stop hovering in the doorway. Sasuke, sit before you crack something worse. Tazuna-san, shutters. Tsunami-san, boiled water if you have it. Clean cloth. A bowl we can ruin."

The room obeyed her because panic liked a voice with verbs in it.

Kakashi's visible eye curved. "Field promotion?"

"Patient demotion," Sakura said. "Lie down."

He did.

Naruto stepped back. It took more effort than the walk from the road. Helping proved usefulness. Hovering gave the illusion of control. Sakura needed space more than he needed either.

So he stood beside the doorway and listened.

Water moved under the house. Wind pressed against boards. Tazuna shut one window, then checked the latch twice. Tsunami put a pot over the fire. Sasuke sat on a stool as if accepting treatment were an insult he planned to avenge.

Sakura worked fast. Pulse. Pupils. Breathing. Mud wiped away from cuts. Shirt loosened from Kakashi's shoulder. Her fingers shook once when she found how cold his skin had gone; she hid it by reaching for another towel.

"Sharingan overuse?" she asked.

"Mostly," Kakashi said.

"Mostly is not a medical category."

"It has served me for years."

"Then years have been very patient with you."

Naruto nearly laughed. It came out as air through his nose. Sasuke noticed and looked annoyed that anyone had enough spare energy for humor.

Tsunami returned with water, cloth, and a low table. "Where do you want these?"

"Here," Sakura said. "Not on the bed. I need the floor clear. If he spasms, I need room."

Tsunami nodded once, no wasted question. Competence recognized competence and moved around it.

A small figure appeared at the kitchen entrance.

Inari was younger than the world deserved, with round glasses, wet eyes trying to harden, and a mouth already shaped around disappointment. He looked at Kakashi on the bed, Sakura's stained sleeve, Sasuke holding his ribs, Naruto's mud-caked sandals, and Tazuna's shame.

His face closed.

"You brought shinobi here."

Tazuna's shoulders sank. "Inari."

"They leave when it gets dangerous."

The house went still around that sentence. Sakura looked up sharply. Sasuke's expression cooled. Naruto felt the old bright speech waiting behind his teeth, all volume and defiance and easy damage.

Heroes. Dreams. Never giving up.

Not here. Not yet.

Inari had earned his anger the worst way.

Naruto crouched so he was not looming over the boy. "Maybe."

Inari blinked. Everyone else did too.

"Naruto," Sakura warned.

He kept his eyes on the child. "People leave. People get scared. People decide your pain costs too much and call it wisdom."

Inari's mouth trembled before the glare returned. "Then don't pretend you're different."

"I haven't proved different."

Silence landed harder than comfort would have.

Naruto stood before crouching started to feel like theater. "We are here tonight. That is what I can say."

Inari looked toward Kakashi. "Your strongest one can barely sit."

"True."

"Then Gato wins."

Tazuna closed his eyes. Tsunami's hand tightened on the clean cloth. Naruto's temper rose, not at Inari, but at Gato, at Konoha, at every machine that made despair sound mature because hope had been priced out of the room.

"Maybe," Naruto said again.

The boy's face twisted. "Why do you keep saying that?"

"Because lying to scared people is rude."

Inari stared.

"Gato might win. Zabuza might be alive. We might fail. If you want a shinobi to promise everything turns out fine because determination makes people invincible, ask someone dumber."

Tazuna opened his mouth.

Naruto lifted one hand without looking at him. The old man had lied them into this mess. He could survive ten seconds of honesty.

"Fear is not a prophecy," Naruto said. "It is an alarm. Sometimes it tells you to run. Sometimes it tells you where the enemy wants you to kneel."

Inari's glare wavered, furious at itself for listening.

"You do not have to believe in us. Save that until we earn something."

Sasuke made a small sound from the stool. Sakura's eyes stayed on Naruto a beat too long.

Inari's voice dropped. "Then what are you useful for?"

"Making maybe expensive."

No one spoke after that. It was not comfort. It was a shape despair could not swallow quickly.

Kakashi, treacherously awake enough to hear, whispered, "Interesting bedside manner."

"You are in bed," Naruto said. "I am in manner."

"Terrible."

"Efficient."

Sakura pressed two fingers to Kakashi's wrist harder than necessary. "Stop talking."

"Yes, medic."

Her ears went pink. Not the time. Still noticed.

Evening pressed against the shutters before the house stopped being a room and started becoming a position.

Sakura made the change first. She cleared the floor around Kakashi, moved the low table within reach, folded clean cloth by size, and put the bowl for dirty water near the door instead of under the bed.

"No one stands in the windows," she said. "No weapons on the table where Inari can reach them by accident."

"Kunai within arm's length for us, not him. Naruto, check the back step. Sasuke, front room only. I do not care how insulted your ribs feel."

Sasuke stared at her.

"Front room," she repeated.

He went, stiff and silent.

Tsunami watched the arrangement and then added her own. "The pantry is low. Rice tonight, rice tomorrow, fish if the nets hold. The pump path is exposed from the road. I can draw water before dawn or after dark."

"Before dawn," Sakura said. "Naruto goes with you."

"I can go alone," Tsunami said.

"I believe you," Sakura said. "He still goes."

Tsunami accepted that, which told Naruto she understood the difference between pride and survival.

Tazuna stood near the kitchen, sober now, hands useless until Tsunami shoved a bundle of shutters at him.

"Bar the back door," she said.

He did it.

The meal came thin and hot. Rice, soup, pickled vegetables. Not enough for the table, arranged as if care could stretch calories. Naruto ate slowly while his stomach argued with every manner he owned.

Inari's bowl was smaller.

Not empty. Smaller.

Naruto moved a third of his rice over when the boy looked away.

Inari noticed at once. "I do not need charity."

"Excellent. This is tactical redistribution."

"What?"

"Eat. You glaring hungry lowers morale."

The boy looked ready to throw the rice. Tsunami rested a hand on his shoulder. He ate. Naruto pretended not to see the way her eyes lowered for half a breath.

Pride did not disappear because someone was hungry. Sometimes pride was the only thing hunger failed to take.

The heat under Naruto's seal stirred when the soup hit his stomach. Hunger, fear, anger, the leftover edge from the road; all of it moved through him and found teeth behind his ribs. Chase. Hunt. Burn the problem before it healed.

He set the bowl down with both hands flat on either side of it.

No.

Zabuza might live. The masked hunter might be an enemy. The bridge might already be watched. None of that made abandoning a wounded teacher, an injured teammate, a client, and a frightened family into courage.

The heat pressed once, offended by restraint.

Naruto breathed until the spoon stopped rattling.

Sasuke saw it.

Of course he did.

After dinner, Kakashi managed to sit against the wall with the arrogance of a man bad at being injured. Sakura let him because his pulse had steadied and because she could not tie a jonin to the bed in front of civilians. She looked as if she had considered it.

Team Seven gathered in the side room. Tazuna stayed near the door. Tsunami kept Inari in the kitchen, but the floorboards carried sound, and children who hated heroes still listened like hope might ambush them.

Kakashi looked at each of them. "Facts."

Sakura answered first. "Senbon to the neck. The hunter checked placement before lifting him. Too much care for disposal."

Sasuke added, "No attack on the client while you were down."

Naruto said, "Removal mattered more than finishing us."

Kakashi's eye paused on him. "And?"

Naruto chose each word as if it had weight. "Hunter-nin usually destroy remains on site. Academy lesson. The mask, the timing, and the needles do not fit cleanly."

He did not give the thought its name.

The room did not need it.

Sakura frowned at the towel in her hands. "The senbon could imitate death?"

"In the right hands," Kakashi said. "For a short window."

Tazuna went pale.

"Then Zabuza is alive," Sasuke said.

"Assume so," Kakashi replied.

"When?"

"Not tonight unless the impossible becomes rude. Soon enough that this house needs rules now."

Sakura already had them. "Two-hour watches. Naruto first because he is too restless to sleep. Sasuke second from the front room, seated. I take third unless Kakashi-sensei worsens. Tazuna-san does not open a door without one of us beside him. Tsunami-san tells us before anyone goes for water, food, nets, or firewood."

"I have work on the bridge," Tazuna said.

"You have a contract with people trying to murder you," Sakura said. "The bridge can wait one night."

The old man flinched, then nodded.

Sasuke leaned against the wall, pale around the mouth. "Naruto."

Naruto looked over.

"You suspected on the road."

Not accusation. Not quite.

"I suspected something."

"Different answer."

"Different risk."

Sasuke's eyes narrowed. Envy lived there, sharp and embarrassed by its own shape. Naruto had known something. Sasuke had seen that. Naruto had also kept silent, and that was harder for Sasuke to place than a boast would have been.

"If you know enough to keep secrets," Sasuke said, "know enough before it gets us killed."

"Trying," Naruto said.

Sasuke looked away first. His hand stayed near his ribs.

Kakashi let the exchange breathe, then ruined any chance of comfort. "No one chases the hunter. No one hunts Zabuza in the dark. We protect the client, recover, and learn what the ground allows us to learn."

Naruto hated how sensible that sounded.

"Naruto," Kakashi said.

"I heard you."

"Hear it twice."

Naruto met his eye. The fox heat had faded to an ember, but the ethical ugliness remained. An enemy had been carried away. A person under a mask had chosen loyalty over clean murder. Exposing too much could endanger them. Hiding too much could endanger everyone in this house.

"No chase," Naruto said.

"No chase," Kakashi repeated.

Outside, a board creaked under the porch.

Every shinobi in the room went still.

Tsunami moved first, one hand covering Inari's mouth before he could ask. Sakura killed the lamp with a pinch of wet cloth. Sasuke slid from the wall with pain on his face and a kunai in hand. Naruto reached the side window without crossing in front of it.

Footsteps passed the road beyond the reeds. Two men, maybe three. No shinobi silence. Local boots. Low voices. One laughed, then stopped when another hissed at him.

"Gato's men," Tazuna breathed.

Naruto saw a strip of blue cord on one sleeve before the dark took it. Not an attack. A count. A reminder.

The footsteps moved on.

No one relaxed.

Kakashi spoke quietly. "Rules just changed."

Sakura nodded. "No visible morning smoke until Tsunami-san says it will not draw attention. Water before dawn with cover. Food cold if needed. Watch from inside first, porch only in pairs. Inari sleeps away from windows."

"I am not a baby," Inari said from the kitchen, muffled by Tsunami's hand.

"Then follow orders like a person with sense," Sakura snapped.

He went silent.

Naruto almost smiled.

Tsunami barred the kitchen window. Tazuna moved a bench against the back door. Sasuke set a cup on the sill with a spoon balanced against it, crude alarm for anyone lifting the latch. Sakura approved with one brisk nod that made him look away.

Kakashi slid lower against the wall. "Sakura."

"I know."

"Say it anyway."

She inhaled. "Safe room is this side room. Kakashi-sensei stays here unless fire or breach forces movement. Tazuna-san and Inari first. Tsunami-san second. Sasuke covers front if he can stand. Naruto covers rear or carries Kakashi if he cannot."

"Reverse," Sasuke said.

"No," Sakura said. "You can still throw. He can carry."

Sasuke hated that she was right. Naruto hated that she was right for a different reason.

Kakashi's eye curved faintly. "Correct."

Sakura pointed at him without looking. "You are not allowed to approve anything until your pulse stops being dramatic."

"Cruel."

"Alive."

The word stayed in the room.

By midnight, the house had changed. Towels dried near the hearth. Boiled water cooled in covered pots. Weapons had positions. Windows had shadows marked. The door had a bench, a bar, and Sasuke's cup trick. Tazuna had a place to sleep where he could be grabbed fast. Inari had a blanket behind the inner wall. Tsunami knew which floorboard complained.

Naruto sat near the rear door for first watch, knees drawn up, kunai across his lap.

Water moved below. Wind worried the nets. Somewhere outside, Wave held its breath.

Sasuke settled across the room, not sleeping, not admitting pain.

"You are staring," Naruto said softly.

"You are listening wrong."

"That means nothing."

"It means you hear things you expect."

Naruto looked at him.

Sasuke's face gave away nothing except exhaustion. "Stop doing that."

Useful. Annoying, but useful.

"Noted," Naruto said.

"Do better than noted."

Naruto let the corner of his mouth lift. "You care."

"I care about surviving your mistakes."

"Warmly phrased."

Sasuke closed his eyes, ending the conversation without surrendering the watch.

Naruto listened again.

Not for what he expected.

For what the house feared.

The rear latch. The water path. Tsunami's quiet steps. Inari turning under a blanket and pretending not to cry. Kakashi's uneven breathing. Sakura scratching rules onto a torn scrap from Tazuna's bridge notes because she did not trust tired minds to hold shape under terror.

No panels. No clean moral. No loud promise could solve this.

Only a house above wet ground, a wounded teacher, an injured rival, a practical girl refusing to freeze, a client who had lied, a family with too little food, and an enemy who had been carried away too carefully to be dead.

Naruto tightened his grip on the kunai.

By dawn, if dawn came politely, they would have water, watch rotations, shutter rules, and a list of places not to stand.

For tonight, that had to count.

The safe house was not safe.

It was a base.
