Chapter 9:
Second Chance At Life
What is going on?
One moment we were interrogating Rin, and now Kaito attacks him.
Is he still hypnotized?
He easily blocked Kaito’s lightning fist.
In response, he throws Kaito’s entire body into one of the windows.
We retreat to the hallway, running for our dear lives, but Catherine heads the wrong way.
“That is the wrong way, milady.”
“I know, but I want to know what’s going on between those two.”
“What for?”
“Aren’t you curious about what's going on? Tsubasa’s reaction? Kaito suddenly attacking Tsubasa? There has to be a connection!”
We can hear screams outside, also sensing the residue of magick.
Catherine leads us to the residue, and as we grow closer to it, I can sense the malicious presence of magick.
It’s close…they’re close…
It’s a good thing nobody is here other than us because I would’ve been annoyed.
The two trades blow, managing to cause small quakes.
Nearby windows shatter upon clashing, birds fly from their homes, and we even start to lose balance.
What is this dangerous battle we are witnessing?
Their vicious rivalry now becomes an array of questions, and the sheer gap of their strength becomes clear.
Rin throws another punch that blasts Kaito away from him.
Something about him feels different—no, unsettling.
His ebony hair is now drenched in scarlet, including his eyes.
“Hmph, I knew there was something about you that’s been aching me.”
And his voice is deeper.
“Sir Tsubasa! Sir Kaito! This is not the time to be sparring! Please stop this fight at this instant!”
“Hm? What makes you think you can order me around?”
Seeing Marissa frown by his response pisses me off.
My motherly instinct kicks in, encouraging me to defend Marissa from that asshole.
It reminds me of the time when Haniza was crying because an old lady called her “crazy”.
And I cannot stand this shitty response he is giving her.
I walk up to him with furrowed brows.
“Watch your mouth, asshole! Do what she says! Do you ever think about how words can affect people?”
“And why should I listen to you?”
“I can kick your ass if I wanted to.”
“Oh? Is that a threat?”
This is why I can’t stand Rin.
He’s so obnoxious.
He acts like he’s better than everyone, but he’s just another cocky man who thinks he can do anything he wants.
Since he’s encouraging me to kick his ass, I may as well do it.
Hopefully, this will put him to his place.
I generate enough magick into my legs.
This blazing strike can break steel apart, so this should put him to a concussion.
He remains still like a statue, grinning.
So obnoxious.
And his stupid grin, despite reincarnating to a different person, I can still imagine the same old Rin and his ridiculous face.
"Dame Juliana, stop! It's dangerous!"
I don’t care about the malicious magick he's exerting.
He's still Rin, trying to play tricks like he always does.
All he sees in this world is a fantasy adventure that he can explore with us.
But the truth is, he's a delusional freak!
I holler with rage, and I kick his left arm.
I can feel the fiery clash between my chin and his arm.
The fire affinity I apply should be enough for him to cry in pain, or break his arm entirely to the point of no recovery.
"It sure is burning my arm."
He seems unfazed by my kick.
"That's half of your strength, right?"
Is he challenging me to hit harder?
I can do that.
I amplify my next kick with flames, engulfing it to its fullest potential.
It's so hot I can feel it burn through my thighs.
"Don’t come crying to me if I hit you with this!"
I aim for the stomach.
The clash creates a fiery storm that engulfs the target (Rin, for this instance).
No man should survive this attack by the intensity of the flames.
I wait until the fire vanquishes to see his last remains, but I hear only laughter.
As the flames disperse, I see an undamaged Rin wiping off the dust from his clothes.
"This is your strongest attack? I'm highly disappointed."
I should be surprised, but my anger for him overwhelms me.
Why did my attack not work?
"Jennifer, was it? All you do is all talk, hoping to intimidate your target. And when you try to get your hands dirty, you act like the victim."
My face distorts in confusion and rage.
"What the fuck does this have to do with this?"
"Your attack is blinded with rage. It lacks power, and frankly, I'm just disappointed."
He slowly walks up to me, extending his arm towards my face.
"Touch me and I will kill you!"
"No need. Your kicks bore me. You will not forget this power; you're not even worthy as my opponent…"
