Chapter 1:
OATH OF THE FALLEN
Heaven radiated in ordered brilliance.
Endless expanses of luminous stone stretched beyond sight. Pillars of living light rose into heights without horizon. Pathways of radiant energy connected floating platforms where countless beings moved with silent purpose.
Archangels glimmered in radiant authority. Lower angels glided in quiet precision. Prophets like David and Ezekiel knelt in solemn observance.
And by the Throne, Jesus radiated calm beside God.
At the edge of this vast expanse stood Kael. Black coat still. Wings folded against his back.
He gazed down at Earth.
He did not see countries or oceans. He saw souls. Golden threads rose from scattered points across the globe—small churches tucked between towers, a mother kneeling beside her child, a man whispering gratitude before sleep. Their prayers pierced the veil like fragile sparks of light.
Elsewhere, darkness pooled.
In neon-lit nightclubs, desire thickened the air; minor demons lingered at the edges, careful, disciplined. In glass towers, greed and envy coiled tightly around ambitious hearts. Anger flared in narrow streets. On rooftops marked with black wax and ash, whispers were spoken outward toward the dark.
Kael watched in cold stillness. Light and shadow. Faith and hunger. Choice and consequence.
Then authority pressed into the air.
Silence fell like a dropped blade. Every celestial paused simultaneously, their brilliance dimming in silent yield before the weight of what had occurred.
Kael turned. He stepped from the edge toward the Throne with heavy, disciplined purpose. The Throne, God, Jesus, the archangels, and prophets all came into clearer view as he stopped at the threshold.
Reality itself bent subtly toward the Throne.
God’s voice pulsed directly inside Kael’s chest.
“The Gate has opened.”
Every celestial present bowed their heads. The word carried weight beyond human comprehension.
“Something has passed through.”
Kael remained silent.
“You will retrieve it.”
A direct command. The anomaly that had passed through the Gate belonged neither to mortals nor the natural order of creation.
Kael inclined his head slightly. Acceptance. Obedience. Trust.
The brilliance parted, opening a clean path for him at the sheer edge of Heaven. Light shifted, bending around his silhouette.
In a heartbeat, he vanished.
⸻
Rain struck concrete in Manhattan. Neon reflected in wet asphalt. Traffic lights flickered through the mist. The city pulsed with life, oblivious to the fracture tearing through the sky beyond mortal perception.
High above Times Square, a ripple warped the night air.
Kael appeared on a high-rise rooftop, silent as shadow. Wings hidden. Black coat slick with rain. The spiritual layer spread before his sight: light, shadow, threads of faith and sin, demons lurking cautiously at the edges.
Far in the distance, a void opened—a spot where light died and shadow refused the laws of physics.
Kael’s eyes narrowed in cold calculation.
The retrieval had begun.
Beyond the veil of rain and neon, the Gate remained open.
