Chapter 2:
OATH OF THE FALLEN
Rain fell steadily over Manhattan, neon lights bleeding across wet pavement in shifting colors.
Kael moved through the crowd without drawing attention. People passed him, spoke, laughed, argued—unaware of what stood among them.
To him, the world was layered.
A man hurried past, tension in his stride. Behind him, a thin, shadowed figure leaned close, whispering into his thoughts, feeding his greed with quiet persistence.
Across the street, a woman stood beneath a dim light, her lips moving in silent prayer. A presence remained at her back, steady and watchful.
Near the subway entrance, a drifting soul lingered in confusion. A hunter walked beside it, guiding it forward with gentle authority.
Above, on rooftops and ledges, angels observed in silent, unmoving vigil.
The city continued, unaware.
Then the pattern broke.
Kael stopped.
A violent disturbance cut through the spiritual layer. It surged with unnatural force, a jagged foreign weight tearing through the realm of mortals.
He turned toward it and continued forward, his pace unchanged.
⸻
The strike came without warning.
A newly departed soul drifted nearby, disoriented and unguarded. The Damned descended on it instantly.
Its form twisted, wrapped in a thick black-red aura that pulsed with rage and hatred. It moved with ruthless speed.
The soul disintegrated.
It was torn to pieces, consumed and destroyed.
The distortion deepened for a brief moment before the Damned moved again, faster now, cutting through the spiritual layer in erratic bursts.
It was running.
It sensed him.
⸻
Kael adjusted his path slightly and kept walking.
The Damned moved unpredictably—through alleys, across streets, doubling back, trying to shake what followed. Its movements were chaotic, driven by wild instinct.
It knew something was coming.
Its aura flickered unevenly as it circled, searching.
For a moment, it believed it was safe.
Then it turned.
Kael stood in front of it.
⸻
The Damned recoiled, its form pulling into something sharper, though still unstable. Its edges jagged, its structure barely holding as its aura surged outward.
It attacked immediately, fast and uncontrolled.
Kael stepped aside with minimal movement and, in the same motion, drew a single Desert Eagle. The second remained holstered at his side.
He fired.
The shot traveled silently through the physical world, but the impact tore through the Damned’s spiritual frame. Its shape distorted violently where the round struck, its aura flaring in agony.
It lashed out again, faster now, desperation creeping into its movements.
He fired again.
The second shot hit cleanly, shattering its form further. The Damned staggered, its aura breaking apart in uneven pulses.
It turned to flee.
Kael stood at the end of its path, already waiting.
⸻
The Damned stopped dead.
Kael stood directly in front of it, one gun raised, his expression unchanged. Complete stillness surrounded him. To him, the outcome was already determined.
The Damned’s aura pulsed violently, shrinking inward as terror eclipsed its rage.
It understood.
Kael steadied his aim and began to pull the trigger.
In that moment everything halted
“Kael.”
The voice resonated directly within his very being, with absolute authority
His finger stopped.
The trigger remained untriggered.
⸻
“No.”
The word was supreme authority. Nothing in creation could oppose it.
⸻
“He will be judged.”
⸻
Kael lowered the gun without hesitation.
⸻
The Damned thrashed, its form breaking apart as its aura flared violently, but the strength behind it evaporated. It struggled against an unseen divine grip.
Kael stepped forward and raised his hand.
The space around the Damned compressed into a tight, immovable cage. Its movements slowed as its chaotic essence was forced into solid cohesion, bound against its will.
It fought the compression.
It failed.
⸻
Kael closed his fist.
The Damned stilled completely.
⸻
Rain continued to fall.
Cars passed. People moved through the streets.
The mortal world remained blind to the sacred work before them.
⸻
Kael turned and stepped forward. The veil of reality parted around him, welcoming his departure.
Silence held the alley.
He vanished.
⸻
Far beyond the reach of the city—
The Gate remained open.
