Chapter 27:
From NEET to Hero!
"What!?" Shizue choked, violently coughing as she completely lost her aristocratic poise.
Katsumi sputtered, wiping a smear of blood from her lip, her eyes wide with absolute horror. "W—What the hell did you just say?"
I stood by the ropes, entirely paralyzed. My brain flatlined.
"Oh~, things are getting spicy!" Orime giggled from the bench, grinning like she hadn't just been violently dismantled for the eighty-eighth consecutive time.
"Absolutely NOT!!" Both Katsumi and Shizue shrieked in unison, their voices echoing off the high ceiling.
I frantically raised my hands, stepping backward. "Hold on, what if I completely refuse?"
Reina tilted her head, her dark hair falling perfectly over her shoulder. Her smile was incredibly sweet, and entirely lethal. "Well~, let's just say you won't be safe sleeping in the dark anymore, Yami~."
"I LOSE EITHER WAY!!!"
My nervous system started misfiring. My lizard brain—the pathetic, degenerate NEET side of me that had spent years locked in a bedroom—was aggressively screaming at me to throw the match. Just lie down, it whispered. Let the terrifying, beautiful shadow lady have her way.
But the other side of me—the side that had spent the last few months bleeding on this canvas, desperately trying to rewrite my own destiny—was roaring for blood.
I swallowed the lump in my throat. "And... what if I win?"
Reina's smile widened, showing a flash of perfectly white teeth. "You can do absolutely anything you'd like to me~."
"Shit... objectively speaking, that is a fantastic deal..."
"YAMI!?" Katsumi and Shizue snapped their heads toward me, looking at me like I was a grotesque alien.
"It's a good deal! It really is!" I pleaded, frantically trying to justify my degenerate thoughts. "Put yourself in my shoes! Let's say you love white chocolate, okay? And a massive, premium white chocolate bar just magically appears right in front of you! You're telling me you wouldn't take a bite!?"
"..."
"..."
The silence from the bench was deafening.
"You guys want me dead, don't you?"
"Damn skippy," Katsumi muttered, her eyes darkening.
"I will bury you myself," Shizue added, crossing her arms.
I sighed, rubbing the back of my neck, and turned to face the apex predator waiting in the center of the ring. "Reina... I'm in."
Smack! Smack!
"OW!! HEY!! Quit it!"
Before I could even step through the ropes, Katsumi and Shizue descended upon me, ruthlessly smacking the back of my head. By the time I finally crawled onto the canvas, my skull was already throbbing.
I rolled my shoulders, shaking out the tension. My body ached from the spar with Katsumi, but the adrenaline was doing an excellent job masking the pain. I could survive this. I had watched her fight Orime. I had downloaded the timing.
Reina stood perfectly still across from me, her seductive aura slowly bleeding away into something infinitely more dangerous.
"I'm quite excited, Yami~," she purred. "This is our first real fight. So... do not hold back. Anything goes~."
"Anything goes? No rules?"
"Indeed~. The stakes are much too high for safety regulations, wouldn't you agree?"
The atmosphere in the gymnasium abruptly fractured. The air didn't just get heavier; it felt like it was actively resisting my lungs. The hairs on my arms stood on end.
I clenched my fists. The metallic tang of fear coated my tongue.
"Just imagine all the naughty things you could do to me if you win~," Reina whispered, her voice carrying unnaturally well across the distance.
"That won't work," I shot back, forcing my breathing to steady. "Try and tempt me all you want. I know you're just trying to compromise my focus."
Reina simply grinned.
"Then let's begi—"
She didn't even let me finish the sentence.
The space between us vanished. There was no footstep. No blur. Just the sudden, violent inversion of air pressure as Reina materialized directly in front of me.
Before my retinas could even register her presence, a kinetic shockwave slammed into my sternum.
"Ghhht—!"
My ribs bowed inward. I was launched backward like a ragdoll, flying helplessly toward the edge of the ring. I braced for the elastic bite of the ropes.
Instead, a searing wall of golden, geometric runes erupted from the boundary line.
I smashed into the barrier of hardlight, the impact rattling my teeth, and slid down to the canvas.
"This is a cage match~," Reina's voice echoed through the hum of the magical barrier.
"I felt it... ow..." I groaned, pushing myself up onto my knees. I stared at the glowing runes enclosing the ring. She meant it. She wasn't sparring. She was hunting.
Come on, Amai, I mentally pleaded. Activate! Of all times... I need the magic now!
Nothing. No golden light. No comforting whisper.
Reina blitzed me again. My perception was entirely outmatched. A brutal elbow crashed into my unprotected ribcage, followed instantly by her leg sweeping behind my knee. The world tilted violently, and I was slammed back into the unforgiving canvas.
She was ferocious. A pure, unadulterated killer.
I saw her fist, wreathed in writhing shadows, descending toward my face like a meteor.
Running purely on raw survival instinct, I violently jerked my head to the side.
The concrete beneath the ring shuddered with a sickening crack. A spiderweb crater instantly splintered across the reinforced mat right where my skull had been a fraction of a second prior.
Reina caught my horrified expression. Her grin turned absolutely ecstatic.
I gnashed my teeth, driving both boots into her stomach and kicking her away with everything I had. I scrambled to my feet, desperate for space.
But Reina didn't pursue physically. Her aura exploded.
A literal tsunami of liquid shadow erupted from her silhouette, rising like a tidal wave and crashing down over me.
"What—?!"
The torrent of darkness swept me off my feet, violently pinning me against the glowing golden barrier. The shadows immediately solidified, twisting into thick, muscular tendrils that coiled tightly around my wrists, hauling my arms completely above my head.
I was suspended. Pinned. Entirely helpless.
Reina casually walked up to my hanging body, pulled her fist back, and drove it directly into my stomach.
The impact forced a spray of saliva from my lips.
From the bench, the girls collectively recoiled.
"That... doesn't look like a friendly spar anymore..." Shizue whispered, her voice trembling.
"Is that even... allowed?" Katsumi gripped the edge of her seat, the blood draining from her face.
"Oh no... Reina-nee has that look..." Orime muttered.
"What look!?" Katsumi snapped.
"Her eyes... she's not playing anymore. Reina won't stop until she has exactly what she wants. There are no rules in this match. She will physically break Yami to win..."
"So the bet was a trap..."
"And he walked right into it..."
CRACK.
Another shadow-infused punch caved into my ribs.
CRACK.
A hook to my jaw.
Every single strike felt like taking a sledgehammer to the bone. My vision dissolved into a static-filled gray. Blood poured freely from my split lip, dripping down my chin and staining my ruined shirt. The ambient noise of the gym—the hum of the lights, the girls shouting—faded into a muffled, underwater distortion.
My knees gave out. The only thing keeping me upright were the dark tendrils threatening to dislocate my shoulders.
My head hung low, my chin resting heavily against my chest. My breathing turned into a shallow, wet rattle.
Consciousness began to slip through my fingers like dry sand.
And then, in the suffocating darkness of my failing mind, the memories flooded in.
The sterile smell of the hospital room. My father's final, hollow smile. The suffocating realization that I was entirely, fundamentally powerless.
I remembered the years that followed. The rotting bedroom. The blackout curtains. The pathetic, cowardly Hikikomori who hid from the world because he was too weak to endure the pain of living in it.
How helpless I was.
How weak.
How utterly useless.
A slow, rhythmic drumming began to echo in my ears.
Thump... Thump...
It was my own heart, struggling to push blood through my battered veins. But the rhythm was accelerating. Growing louder. More violent.
A tiny, blinding spark of gold flickered in the absolute darkness of my mind.
Fuck the pain.
The spark grew.
Fuck the Blight. Fuck being weak.
I was not going back to that room. I was not going back to being a victim.
I would literally rather die here than lose to my own weakness.
The air inside the arena abruptly superheated.
The thick, shadowy tendrils binding my wrists began to hiss, boiling away like water dropped onto a white-hot skillet.
I dropped to the canvas, landing heavily on my boots. The violent sizzling sound filled the silence of the gym.
I slowly lifted my head. Reina was staring at me, her ecstatic grin completely erased, replaced by a flicker of genuine shock.
I looked down at my arms.
There was no Amai whispering in my ear. But beneath my bruised, battered skin, the Golden Veins had ignited. They weren't just glowing; they were burning, pulsing with a terrifying, untamed radiance that cast sharp, blinding shadows across the ring.
This wasn't borrowed power. This was mine.
"Woah... He finally tapped into his reserves..." Shizue leaned forward, her eyes wide with awe.
"That looks completely different from when he fought Oharu..." Katsumi muttered, a hint of frustration in her voice. "Is this his raw output?"
"Yeah... but it's volatile. It's completely incomplete. He's brute-forcing the magic without a filter..." Orime observed, her metallic aura flaring slightly in response to my energy.
"Master..." Amai's voice suddenly echoed faintly in my mind, sounding absurdly proud. "You actually did it. It only took you nearly dying to figure out the ignition switch."
Reina recovered from her shock, her feral smile slowly returning. "Wow, look at you~. Did you finally decide to fight back, Yami~?"
"What the hell is wrong with you!?" I spat a mouthful of blood onto the canvas. "You almost caved my chest in!"
"Oh, don't be so dramatic. You can take a little punishment..."
"I mean, physically yes, but that was genuinely a close call!"
"You're such a baby. Do not forget what is on the line here~." Reina's aura exploded again, the shadows around her thickening into a dense, suffocating miasma. She was done playing.
I let out a long, ragged exhale and fully locked in. "I know."
I took a single step forward.
The golden light flared, and I completely vanished from Reina's line of sight.
She flinched, violently throwing her guard up just as my glowing knuckles slammed into her forearm. The kinetic force sent her skidding backward, the light actively burning away the shadows clinging to her skin.
She lunged, attempting to grapple my waist, but I was already gone.
"Tch..." Reina clicked her tongue, her eyes darting furiously around the cage.
I reappeared on her flank, driving a heavy, light-infused hook into her ribs. She spun, lashing out with a blind backhand, but she only caught empty air.
"Heh~. You're refusing to grapple me~," she noted, rubbing her bruised side.
I kept my mouth shut. I wasn't an idiot. If I engaged in a submission battle, her superior kinesthetics would tear me apart. My only win condition was completely overwhelming her reaction frames with sheer velocity.
I blitzed her again, aiming a straight right at her jaw.
Suddenly, her hand snapped out, her fingers locking around my glowing wrist with the crushing force of a steel vice.
Oh shit.
"You're far too predictable, Yami~," Reina whispered.
She pivoted her hips and violently hurled my entire body through the air. I crashed into the golden hardlight barrier, the runes flaring aggressively against my spine.
"Ght..." I grunted, pushing off the wall.
I narrowed my eyes. Why had her counter suddenly looked so... slow?
Then I remembered. The spar with the arrogant princess. Brilliant Break. The sensory overload that slowed my perception of time to a crawl. I wasn't just moving faster; my brain was processing the world at a higher frame rate.
Reina closed the distance, throwing a devastating, shadow-wrapped straight punch directly at my face.
Weave.
I slipped my head an inch to the left. The wind from her fist burned my cheek, and her knuckles slammed directly into the golden barrier behind me. A massive network of cracks spiderwebbed across the unbreakable magic.
How much physical horsepower does this woman have!?
While her arm was fully extended, I countered. My fist shot out like a golden bullet, sinking deep into the center of her chest.
A sharp sizzle filled the air.
I pulled my hand back, realizing with a spike of panic that the pure, concentrated light had instantly melted a perfect circle into the center of her leather top.
Before I could even apologize, Reina's left hook bypassed my guard and nearly detached my jaw from my skull.
"Ghhht—"
I stumbled sideways, my vision spinning. She was pressing the advantage. I needed a distraction.
I channeled the erratic light into my right hand and aggressively snapped my fingers.
A blinding, concussive flashbang of pure lux erupted directly in front of Reina's face.
"Gaaah!" Reina recoiled, throwing her arms over her eyes.
"Woah... that's totally new, Master..." Amai muttered in awe.
"You scheming little rat..." Reina hissed, blinking furiously.
I didn't waste the opening. I tackled her around the waist, driving her into the canvas, and unleashed a desperate rain of blows. But my fists weren't hitting flesh. A thick, gooey mass of dense shadow had instantly cocooned her body. It felt like I was punching a reinforced tire made of Play-Doh.
Suddenly, the shadowy mass surged upward, violently wrapping around my entire body.
"What!?"
Reina, perfectly insulated within her cocoon, stood up, spun me around by the tendrils, and hurled me across the cage. I bounced off the barrier, completely disoriented, only for her to catch me mid-air. She slammed both of her hands together and spiked me directly down into the mat like a volleyball.
The canvas exploded into a cloud of dust and displaced shadows.
I lay in the crater, coughing up a lungful of dark, bitter smoke. "Ow... that actually really hurt..."
There was absolutely no time to recover.
The air tore open with a sharp, terrifying crack.
"YAAAAOWWW!?"
A shadow whip lashed across my back, burning through my shirt and searing my skin.
I scrambled to my feet, my survival instincts screaming. The second whip cracked toward my neck. I didn't try to dodge. I reached out with my left hand, flooding my palm with blinding light, and caught the tendril mid-air.
The shadow shrieked like a dying animal and instantly melted into harmless vapor against my skin.
Reina's grin widened to terrifying proportions.
"So, you truly can vaporize my magic, huh~."
"I... guess so."
"That is the first time anyone has ever been able to do that, Yami~." Reina paused, her dark eyes slowly trailing over the violently glowing, golden veins tracing up my forearms. "You truly are one of a kind, Yami~."
"What the hell is she talking about?" Shizue muttered loudly from the bench.
"I'm wondering the exact same thing, Shizue!" I yelled back without taking my eyes off Reina.
"You can hear me!?"
"Yes!"
"You creep..."
"How in God's name does that make me a creep!?"
Taking advantage of my distraction, Reina slammed her heel into the mat. A dozen tendrils slithered up my legs, binding my knees and waist.
"You're acting just like Orime-chan~," Reina purred, strolling closer. "You can't sustain this output for long~."
I grabbed the thickest tendril binding my chest. The light flared, and the shadow melted into sludge.
"Heh~."
"What's so damn funny!?" I barked, my chest heaving with exhaustion.
"You can't apply your elemental infusion to your entire body yet~."
"Okay...? And?" I melted another tendril, tearing my leg free.
"It means you can't win~. You are hemorrhaging mana. Your tank will deplete very, very soon~."
"Tch..."
I hated it, but she was entirely right. This was my first time manually keeping the Golden Veins open without Amai acting as a governor. Orime's fight didn't count, and I was burning through my stamina and magic at an apocalyptic rate.
I needed a weapon.
I raised my right hand, focusing the erratic, violent light spilling from my veins. The motes of lux swirled, condensing and stretching until a heavy, unstable broadsword made of pure, humming light materialized in my grip.
Reina raised an eyebrow. "A weapon~?"
"You're using whips. Seemed fair."
I swung the blade, hacking through the remaining shadow bindings like I was clearing brush with a machete. It cut through the darkness effortlessly.
But my arms were trembling violently. Holding the sword felt inherently wrong. The balance was off. It felt less like a master-crafted blade and more like holding a glowing, vibrating baseball bat.
Reina noticed the instability immediately.
"Aww~. Is this your very first time holding a sword, Yami~?"
"Shut up..."
"You're gripping the hilt far too tightly. You'll exhaust your forearms in sixty seconds."
Reina raised her empty hand. The ambient darkness in the cage instantly rushed toward her palm. It swirled. Condensed. Twisted tighter and tighter until it formed a solid, glossy-black baseball bat. The shadows around the wood crackled and snapped like violent static electricity.
"Condensing," she instructed, resting the bat casually against her shoulder. "It is a fundamental skill. Incredibly difficult to master. Exceedingly easy to fail."
She took a slow, deliberate step forward.
"Most amateurs attempt to force their mana into a rigid shape. They push. They strain. They end up with a fragile, vibrating blob that shatters on impact."
She swung the bat once, lazily.
A sharp, dark shockwave literally ripped through the air, vibrating the golden barrier twenty feet away.
"Like this."
I tightened my grip on my trembling sword, my knuckles turning white. "Show off."
"Mm~. But it works."
She blurred.
The shadow bat came down like an executioner's axe.
I raised the light sword horizontally to block.
CLANG!!
The concussive impact shot a horrific vibration straight down my arms, instantly numbing my elbows. My boots lost traction, sliding backward until the concrete beneath the canvas splintered.
"Far too slow~," Reina teased.
She fluidly spun the bat, utilizing the recoil to deliver a devastating horizontal swing aimed at my ribs.
I ducked. The glossy black wood whistled a fraction of an inch over my scalp.
I stepped in, attempting a desperate, clumsy upward slash.
Reina merely tilted her torso. The blade of light missed her by an embarrassingly wide margin.
"Your footwork is adorable~."
Damn it. Without Amai feeding me the kinesthetic data, my swordplay was absolute garbage.
Reina stepped effortlessly inside my broken guard. She dropped her center of gravity and swung the bat low, connecting directly with my unprotected side.
CRACK.
"Ghhht—!?!?"
The world spun violently. I was launched sideways, crashing heavily into the hardlight barrier. I crumpled to the floor, gasping desperately for air that wouldn't come.
"Yami!" Katsumi screamed, jumping to her feet.
"He's getting entirely wrecked..." Shizue muttered, covering her mouth.
I forced my boots under my center of gravity. My vision was swimming, my ribs screaming, but the sword in my hand was still glowing. Still solid.
I dragged myself up, spitting a mouthful of blood.
"I'm... not done..."
Reina smiled, a look of genuine, terrifying affection in her eyes. "That's the spirit~."
She rushed me again. The bat was a blur of motion, trailing thick black smoke that obscured her true range.
I raised my sword. But this time, I didn't brace my legs to match her monstrous power. I relaxed my grip, letting the volatile light hum in my palm.
She swung an overhead strike designed to crush my collarbone.
I didn't block. I parried.
I angled my blade, catching the trajectory of the bat and allowing it to slide harmlessly off the light. Using her forward momentum against her, I stepped deep into her zone and thrust the tip of the sword forward.
Reina twisted her torso with unnatural speed, but she wasn't fast enough.
The tip of the light blade grazed her exposed shoulder. A thin, searing line of golden fire burned across her skin.
She stopped perfectly still.
She looked down at the glowing scratch on her shoulder.
And then, she grinned. A wide, terrifyingly genuine smile.
"There it is~."
She casually rolled her neck, the vertebrae popping loudly.
"Now you are finally starting to understand."
She raised the bat high above her head. The shadows in the arena instantly rushed toward the weapon, swirling violently around the black wood. She was condensing it further. Making it unimaginably dense. Unfathomably heavy.
"Let's see if your little toy can handle this~."
She swung.
The air itself seemed to shatter. The pressure was suffocating.
I threw both hands onto the hilt of my sword, raising the blade of light to intercept the apocalyptic strike.
BOOOOM!!
The impact was catastrophic. For a fraction of a second, the light held against the crushing darkness.
And then...
SNAP.
My sword shattered into a million useless motes of golden dust.
The next thing I registered was a dense, black blur slamming violently into the side of my head. The world tilted sideways. The canvas rushed up to meet me, the ground shattering like spun glass upon impact.
My consciousness blanked.
When my vision finally dragged itself back into focus, my left eye was completely swollen shut.
Reina was straddling my chest, pinning my arms down. The shadow bat had dissolved. Her knees dug painfully into my biceps. She had won. I was completely, fundamentally broken.
I braced myself for the smug, victorious grin. I braced myself to accept my horrific fate.
But it never came.
I blinked my good eye, trying to focus on her face above me.
Reina wasn't smiling.
Her skin was chalk-white. Her breath was hitched in her throat. The untouchable, predatory dominatrix was completely frozen, staring down at me with an expression of sheer, unadulterated terror.
She looked like she was staring directly into the eyes of a ghost.
