Chapter 28:
From NEET to Hero!
"Reina...?" My voice cracked, coming out as a wet, broken rasp. "What's wrong?"
Every nerve in my body was screaming. A sickening, pulsing agony shot from my fractured cheekbone all the way down to my bruised ribs, but the look on her face was infinitely more alarming than my injuries.
The blood had completely drained from her cheeks. The untouchable, predatory aura that had suffocated the arena mere seconds ago vanished, leaving behind someone who looked entirely hollowed out. She stared past me—or through me—like an executioner had just stepped into the room.
Reina abruptly scrambled off my chest. Her movements were rigid, panicked.
"The match is over... I'm leaving." She spat the words out like they burned her tongue, and before I could even process the sudden shift, she shattered into a dozen ragged, fleeing fragments of shadow.
"Reina—!" I tried to force myself upright, but my arms buckled instantly, sending me crashing back down onto the cracked canvas.
I painfully rolled onto my side, gazing around the empty ring.
The silence in the gym was absolute. The golden barrier had dissolved, leaving the girls completely bewildered on the bench.
Katsumi was the first to move. She vaulted over the ropes and slid to her knees beside me, carefully sliding her arms under my shoulders to help me sit up. Shizue was right behind her, her usual aristocratic poise completely abandoned.
Orime approached slowly, her metallic eyes fixed intently on the empty space where Reina had just vanished.
"That's incredibly odd..." Orime murmured, her voice barely above a whisper. "I have never seen Reina-nee look like that. The only time her biometric data spiked with that kind of fear was when Momo-sama visited her."
"I should be relieved she didn't go through with the bet..." Katsumi said, anxiously scanning the rafters. "But her expression... where the hell did she just go?"
"Damned if I know." Shizue crossed her arms, though her trembling hands betrayed her. "At least Yami is still breathing. Not that I care, obviously. Hmph."
It was a weak deflection. Shizue couldn't mask the genuine terror in her eyes, even if she tried.
I didn't have the energy to tease her. My swollen eye throbbed in time with my pulse. I just stared at the exit doors, a cold, heavy dread settling in my gut. What exactly had just happened?
***
The mana-siphon hummed beneath the arena floor—a low, subsonic thrum felt in the molars rather than heard. Thirty-seven point two percent efficiency. Acceptable.
I stood completely motionless in the deepest shadow of the maintenance catwalk, three levels below the cheapest bleachers. Down here, the air tasted of ozone, rusted iron, and the copper-sweet rot of old blood. My Null Driver rested dormant across my shoulders, folded neatly into a heavy, briefcase-sized block. I had no need for armor today. Today was purely for data collection.
My visor—currently retracted, the lenses seamlessly folded into the temples of my glasses—fed raw telemetry directly into my optic nerve.
FIGHTER MANA SIGNATURE NOTES: Oshima Yami | Malice / Light / ??? | Primary Target. Containment: Unstable. Kurokawa Reina | Shadow / Darkness | Asset. Deviating from parameters. Division E | Varied | Incidental. Background noise.
I tapped my index finger twice against my thumb.
Deviation detected.
Reina Kurokawa hadn't been fighting to win. She was playing. She was toying with Yami—drawing the match out, savoring the kinetic feedback, letting her shadow-tendrils carve lazy, indulgent spirals through the air when a single Shattered Veil would have ended the boy minutes ago.
Unacceptable.
I engaged the bone-conduction implant resting behind my left ear. My voice was utterly flat.
"Reina. Status."
Through the feed, I heard her breath hitch. Then came the laughter—warm, coerced, and utterly disgusting.
"Oh, Reynos! Watching me work? You do care~ ♡"
"You were ordered to test the target's Malice threshold. Not... flirt."
A pause. Far below, her shadowy form flickered in the ring, her grin widening for the cameras.
"Mm, but he's so cute when he struggles~ That face... those eyes... You should see him up close, Boss. All that raw power, and he's still so fundamentally weak~."
I pressed my thumb against the micro-switch on my ring. A sharp, high-frequency click echoed exclusively in her earpiece.
"You will extract the sample. That was not a request."
"Aww, no fun~ Fine, fine—"
Then, she froze.
She didn't just stop moving. She locked up. Every tendril of dark mana hovering around her stalled mid-motion. The playful, seductive lilt in her voice was instantly severed.
"...Boss?"
I didn't move a millimeter. I didn't alter my breathing pattern. I merely allowed my eyes to narrow in the darkness of the catwalk. My internal HUD immediately highlighted the biometric data my optical sensors had just caught from her face:
Pupils: DILATED. Heart rate: 142 → 198. Cortisol spike: 340%. Micro-tremors in vocal cords detected. Diagnosis: FEAR. GENUINE. PRIMAL.
Interesting.
"R-Reynos...?" Her voice cracked over the comms, slow and fragile. "What's wrong...?"
The apex predator was completely gone. In her place was something remarkably small. Something hunted. Something suddenly remembering its place on the food chain.
I calmly adjusted my glasses with a single, precise finger.
"The machine beneath the ring. The mana absorption array. Containment protocols. Is everything ready?"
Silence. Three seconds. Four seconds. It was undoubtedly the longest four seconds of her life; I knew this because I was accurately counting the milliseconds.
"Y... yes," she finally stammered. "Ninety-four percent containment. The Divine Sword interface... it still actively rejects non-mage synchronization. But the siphon—"
"Good. Finish the extraction. Return to base. Do not engage the target further. Do not speak to him. Do not look at him a second longer than strictly necessary."
"Y—yes. Understood. Returning... now—"
Far below, I watched her shadow-form shatter. She didn't cleanly dissolve into the darkness; she fractured into panicked, frantic pieces that desperately fled toward the ventilation shafts like roaches fleeing a flashlight.
Yami collapsed. Division E swarmed the ring. Confusion. Concern. Useless noise.
I tapped my left wrist with my thumb. Once. Twice. Three times.
Variable: Reina's loyalty. Constant: Her absolute terror. Solution: The leverage holds.
I turned away from the railing. The heavy block at my side hissed as the internal mechanisms shifted, the Null Driver components sliding into my grip with a practiced, inevitable silence.
"Tonya. Phase two. The prototype advances."
"Already in motion, sir," Tonya's crisp voice replied instantly. She was the one subordinate who understood the assignment. "Haruka's channels just cleared the customs hold on the Divine Sword components. Sato is in position at the medical bay."
"Good. Haruka—redirect twelve percent of Circulos' liquid assets to the offshore shell accounts. Sato—if Reina hesitates upon return, remove her. Quietly."
"Yes, sir~!" Sato chimed in, her voice dripping with sadistic excitement.
"Consider the funds moved, Reynos," Haruka added smoothly, her intellect always a reliable secondary processor to my own.
"And the target?" Tonya asked.
I began walking. The iron grating of the catwalk didn't so much as creak beneath my heavy boots.
"He keeps fighting. He keeps feeding the machine. When the Locuras tournament ends..."
My visor snapped down over my eyes. A crimson HUD violently blossomed across my vision.
MANA CAPACITY: 37.2% — RISING.
"...I will take back everything he stole from me. With interest."
The metallic block hissed, wrapping tightly around my waist to form the assembly belt.
"Henshin. Null Driver—OVERRIDE."
"Are you going to enter the tournament, Reynos?" Sato suddenly crashed back into my private comms.
"No, that would be unfair."
"Ehhh? Come on! I want to fight you again! Let me have a rematch!"
I reached up, tapped my earpiece, and permanently blocked her frequency.
I only tolerated her bloodlust because a dull knife was still capable of cutting throats.

The harsh, fluorescent lights of the infirmary did absolutely nothing to help the agonizing throb in my skull.
Sera-san, the school's perpetually unamused nurse, forcefully pressed a freezing ice pack over my swollen left eye.
"This is the second time I've seen you in my office this week, boy," she muttered, adjusting her glasses.
"Get used to it," I groaned, wincing as the cold bit into my fractured cheek. "I tend to get hurt a lot. Statistically speaking, usually by the people I trust."
"Oh, shut up. I only shot you with three fire blasts," Shizue retorted defensively from the plastic waiting chair.
"And we had a perfectly reasonable spar earlier," Katsumi added, leaning against the wall with her arms crossed.
It was a miracle they had managed to drag me here. After Reina vanished, she had reappeared briefly in the hallway, looking completely rattled, told us to "prepare for tomorrow," claimed she had "important business," and immediately disappeared again.
Yeah. Prepare for tomorrow. With a fractured face and a concussion.
The infirmary was suffocatingly quiet. Everyone was tense.
"Did somebody die in here? You kids need to liven up," Sera scoffed, pulling a roll of gauze from a drawer.
"Please don't jinx us, old lady," I sighed heavily.
Reina's terrified expression kept flashing behind my closed eyelid. Not the sadistic flirt who had been violently whipping me with shadows. The absolute, paralyzing fear. Something had completely derailed her. Something infinitely more dangerous than an amateur with glowing veins.
"It's Sera to you, kid," she shot back, glaring daggers at my good eye. She paused, looking over at Katsumi and Shizue. "Did this boy cheat on someone or something?"
"Hey." I protested.
"Surprisingly, no. This is just standard collateral damage," Katsumi replied completely deadpan.
"Hey!!"
The infirmary door suddenly slammed open.
"I'm here! You called?!" Yuna burst into the room, panting heavily as if she had just sprinted a full marathon in combat boots.
"There she is... easy there, Yuna-san, breathe," Shizue offered, standing up.
"Healers are a rare commodity, boy. You're incredibly lucky you have a cute young lady willing to patch up your messes," Sera said, pressing the ice pack into my own hand and stepping back to let Yuna work.
"Y—Yami-kun!?" Yuna gasped, rushing to my bedside and gently framing my ruined face with her hands. "What happened to you!?"
Behind her, Katsumi and Shizue simultaneously groaned.
"Oho~? Well, would you look at that dynamic," Sera muttered to herself, highly entertained.
"Let's just say... I encountered a minor disagreement regarding personal boundaries," I rasped.
"Uh... huh?" Yuna blinked, utterly lost.
"Just... the magic, please. Before I pass out."
Yuna immediately straightened up. She stepped back, struck an embarrassingly cute pose, and formed a heart with her hands. "[Heart Beam...]"
A brilliant, glowing pink outline of a heart materialized in the air and washed directly over my body.
The relief was instantaneous. It felt like sinking into a warm, perfectly drawn bath. The agonizing pressure in my skull receded. The sharp, stabbing pain in my ribs smoothed out into a dull ache as the fractured bone began to rapidly knit itself back together.
I let out a long, ragged exhale.
"You're an absolute lifesaver. I seriously owe you one, Yuna." I offered her a tired, genuine smile.
Yuna physically flinched, her entire face turning the color of a fire engine. "Y—YES~!"
Did I say something weird? She looked like I had just proposed to her.
Shizue let out a low, incredibly hostile growl that sounded alarmingly like an angered wolf. Katsumi just rubbed her temples and sighed.
"Oho~? First-name basis? So you're that close to this particular young lady?" Sera prodded, a wicked grin spreading across her face.
Oh, shit.
The cot creaked loudly as I forced myself to stand up, desperate to escape the impending crossfire. "I'm perfectly healed. Thank you. I need to go. I have to physically prepare for the Locuras... thing."
"The... what?" Yuna blinked, her blush fading into confusion.
Katsumi quickly filled her in on the absolute nightmare tournament we had been roped into.
"You guys are entering a sanctioned underground Martial Arts tournament!?" Yuna practically vibrated with excitement, pouting her lips. "Why didn't anyone invite me!? I would have followed you anywhere, Yami!"
"Right... you do have a history of doing exactly that..."
"I am definitely securing front-row tickets! Oh my god, I'm inviting our entire squad!" Yuna squealed, whipping her phone out of her pocket.
"Yuna, please... I beg you, do not do that..."
"Too late! I already bought six tickets online!"
"How are you that fast!?"
"Well, there you have it," Shizue sighed, dramatically running a hand through her crimson hair. "I guess the entire circus is coming to watch you bleed."
Yuna's thumbs flew across her screen. "Oharu and Hisoka haven't replied yet—oh! Wait!"
She read the screen.
"Oharu-san says she explicitly wants front-row seats to watch Yami get completely demolished. And Hisoka says she has literally nothing better to do on a Saturday. So they're both officially confirmed!"
"Go figure," I groaned, dropping my face into my hands.
Accepting my fate, I thanked Sera and Yuna, dragging myself out of the infirmary. I needed to get back to Reina's estate. I needed to lie down in the guest room and stare at the ceiling.
I couldn't shake the cold feeling in my chest.
Reina... what exactly are you mixed up in?
***
Deep within the luxurious, soundproofed walls of the academy's executive office.
Lady Oshima sat behind her massive mahogany desk, her posture immaculate.
"Lady Oshima," Hotaru spoke softly, standing perfectly straight near the window. "Yami has officially entered a fighting tournament."
"A tournament?" My mother paused, her pen hovering over a stack of administrative paperwork. "What kind of tournament? I suppose gaining practical combat experience is an acceptable method to prepare him for The Grand Maiden Royale."
"It is an underground circuit, ma'am. Wrestle Locuras."
My mother's eyes widened. The pen slowly slipped from her fingers, clattering softly against the polished wood. She hadn't expected to hear that nostalgic, brutal name in decades.
Her expression hardened into something entirely unreadable.
"Hotaru."
"Yes, ma'am?"
"Cancel my afternoon appointments. And tell me absolutely everything my son is currently involved in."
