Chapter 57:

The One Who Looked First

Naruto: Shadow Clone System

Mission update is live.

Get comfortable. The village is watching.

Naruto found Training Ground Five because he was looking for somewhere empty and Konoha had started charging rent for silence.

Not actual rent. Probably.

The main practice fields near the Academy were full by midmorning. Two instructors had paused when he passed, not quite staring, while a cluster of younger students pretended to adjust kunai straps so they could look at him twice. The Academy authorization folded inside his pouch had Iruka's stamp on it, Sakura's handwriting on the back, and the word supervised underlined hard enough to bruise the paper.

Rumor had weight now.

It opened doors. It also made people count windows.

A woman at the supply stall had sold him fresh grip tape without flinching, then asked if Wave really had named a bridge after him. A boy no older than nine had looked at Naruto's stomach before looking at his face. The old man who sharpened practice kunai had given him a discount and then watched both hands until Naruto stepped away from the counter.

Improving was not the same thing as healed.

So Naruto walked past the proper grounds, past a line of storage sheds, and into a clearing tucked behind cedar trees where the village noise thinned to birds, wind, and the dull thock of a palm striking wood.

Hinata Hyuga stood in the center of the ground.

Not hiding.

Training.

Her jacket lay folded over a stump. Dark hair was tied back from her face. Her hands were raised, fingers loose until the instant they were not. The Byakugan was active, pale eyes fixed on a wooden post marked with charcoal dots. She moved through a sequence so quiet and exact that Naruto's sore ribs became nervous out of sympathy.

Palm. Step. Turn. Two fingers. Breath.

Again.

The final strike touched the center mark without splintering the wood. Control, not force. It was the sort of restraint people praised after they had survived the version without restraint.

Naruto respected it immediately.

Then the part of him that remembered another story tried to arrive with names already attached.

Shy heiress. First loyal believer. Future confession. Future wife in a line of events that had already cracked under his feet.

He hated how quickly the old shape offered itself. Not because Hinata was unattractive. She was. Quietly, dangerously so, in the way a blade under silk was still a blade.

It was wrong because knowing someone might care did not make that care his property.

He took one step back.

"Naruto-kun?"

Caught.

Hinata did not drop the stance. Her shoulders tightened and color rose in her face, but the Byakugan stayed active and her hands remained between them.

Embarrassed, yes.

Defenseless, no.

He lifted one hand, palm open. "I was looking for an empty training ground. I found a terrifying Hyuga instead."

Her mouth parted. The first sound caught. She swallowed it, tried again, and the second attempt landed. "I did not mean to take it."

"You got here first. Legally yours."

"There is no law for that."

"Then we are pioneers."

The corner of her mouth moved before she could stop it. Small. Real. Gone almost at once.

Naruto did not step closer. That felt important.

"I can leave," he said.

Hinata's fingers flexed once. Her eyes shifted from his face to the taped forearm, then to the path behind him where the cedar branches still moved from his arrival. When she spoke, the answer came soft, but not empty.

"You do not have to."

The effort behind the sentence mattered more than the volume. Sakura could cut a room open with three words and a receipt. Hinata had to carry hers over a wall built from habit, clan training, and a lifetime of being watched. Smaller did not mean easier.

"Then I will take that side." Naruto pointed to the older targets. "I promise not to bleed dramatically unless necessary."

"Is it often necessary?"

"Less than rumors suggest."

Hinata looked at the cedars, then back at him. "They reached the compound."

"The rumors?"

She nodded. "Several versions."

"Any of them flattering?"

"Some."

"That is suspicious."

"Some were frightened," she said.

The old wound surfaced, except he was learning not to name every ache like a discovery. Konoha was not one crowd. It was shopkeepers, Academy children, clan guards, retired shinobi, parents with old stories, and people who had learned fear before they learned Naruto's name. Wave had changed the surface. It had not scraped the village clean.

"Yeah," he said. "That part keeps showing up."

Hinata lowered her hands, but the Byakugan remained active. "I was glad you returned."

No performance. No demand. Just a sentence placed carefully between them.

Old hunger moved in Naruto's chest before thought could dress it up. Recognition. Warmth. A stupid, aching want to be seen by someone who had looked before everyone else thought it was permitted.

He held the feeling with both hands and did not spend it.

"Thank you," he said.

Hinata blinked as if the simple answer had reached farther than a clever one would have. Fine. Let respect be surprising. It was better than taking devotion as a debt already owed.

They trained separately for ten minutes.

Separately did not mean privately.

Naruto practiced balance along a damp log, pushing chakra into his soles and withdrawing before the bark cracked. Hinata returned to the post, palm sequences tightening around the charcoal dots. Neither watched openly. Both watched anyway.

He caught her tracking his chakra control twice with the Byakugan.

She caught him stealing footwork once and went red to the ears.

"Sorry," he said.

"For watching?"

"For being obvious."

"Oh."

The silence after that was not bad. Just new.

Naruto wiped sweat from his jaw. "Your footwork does not waste anything."

"It wastes many things."

"Could have fooled me."

She looked down at the dirt between them. "My cousin would disagree."

Neji arrived in Naruto's thoughts like a door closing.

Branch house. Main house. Seal. Genius shaped into resentment by a system older than the children forced to carry it. Naruto had opinions. Most of them were explosive and none of them belonged in Hinata's first quiet morning with him.

"Cousins can be wrong," he said.

Hinata's mouth tightened. "He is rarely wrong about technique."

"Technique is not everything."

"Hyuga would disagree."

"Hyuga sound exhausting."

For one terrible second, Naruto thought he had overstepped.

Then Hinata laughed.

The sound startled two birds out of the cedar line. Hinata watched them vanish over the sheds with a hand half-raised to her mouth, horrified by herself and still smiling.

"I should not laugh at that."

"Probably not."

"It was rude."

"Accurate rudeness has a distinguished history."

She looked at him sidelong. "Do you always defend your bad habits?"

"Only the loyal ones."

This time the smile lasted longer.

Naruto liked that too much.

Noted. Controlled. No grabbing at it.

Hinata walked to her jacket and took a small cloth bundle from the pocket. "I brought salve. For bruises."

He blinked.

"Not because I knew you would be here," she added quickly. "I carry it often. Training."

"I believe you."

She held it out with both hands. A tremor touched her fingers. The tremor did not stop her from offering it.

Naruto accepted it with both hands because some gifts deserved ceremony even when nobody named them that way.

"Thanks."

"The cut on your arm should not reopen if you keep pressure even," she said. "Your chakra flares when you lose balance."

"You saw that?"

She nodded.

"Byakugan feels like cheating."

"Shadow clones feel like cheating."

Naruto stared.

Hinata's face went pink again, but she did not apologize.

Then he laughed. "That was a clean hit."

"Was it?"

"Very."

She looked relieved and uncertain at the same time, as if being funny by accident required formal review. Naruto almost made another joke. He stopped. The morning did not need him filling every gap so nobody could hear him want things.

"Can you tell how much it flares?" he asked.

Hinata's expression steadied. Training gave her a place to stand. "Enough that someone with eyes like mine would know before you moved."

"That is bad."

"It is honest."

"Worse."

She stepped closer by one careful pace. "May I?"

The question pointed at his shoulder, not his future, not his secrets, not the old story trying to put her in a neat place.

"Yes."

Hinata tapped two fingers lightly against the front of his shoulder. Clinical. Brief. Still enough kindness that old Naruto's body reacted like a starving thing smelling bread.

He breathed through it instead of leaning in.

"Here," she said. "You gather too much before your feet decide. The shoulder answers first."

"My shoulder is a traitor."

"It is trying to help."

"Many traitors say that."

Her mouth twitched. "Again?"

"Again."

They repeated the motion until the flare softened.

Not vanished.

Softened.

Progress measured in making his body less loud about every plan it wanted to shout.

At the far edge of the clearing, two civilian workers passed between the sheds with crates balanced on their shoulders. One looked in, recognized the orange, and looked away too quickly. The other whispered something. Hinata noticed. Naruto noticed that she noticed.

She did not ask if it hurt.

He appreciated that more than he expected.

"It is not always worse," she said after a while.

"Being watched?"

"Being seen."

Naruto turned the words over carefully. "Depends who gets to choose what they saw."

Hinata's gaze dipped. "Yes."

There was a door there. Clan eyes. Compound questions. People deciding what a quiet girl meant before she finished breathing. Naruto could hear the shape of it without forcing the lock.

"Then today we choose footwork," he said.

Hinata looked up.

"Not clan politics," he added. "Not Wave stories. Not whatever the rumor market is charging this week. Footwork."

Partial information was safer than a perfect story.

Her fingers tightened in the edge of her sleeve. "Footwork is acceptable."

"High praise."

"For Hyuga, yes."

He grinned, and she almost did too.

Near noon, a chime rang somewhere past the Academy rooftops. Hinata deactivated the Byakugan. The world seemed less sharp for it, though Naruto knew that was nonsense. She gathered her jacket, folding the sleeves once, then again, buying a second before leaving.

"Clan duties?" he asked.

"Yes."

"Exhausting?"

"Often."

Naruto wanted to say too much. About Neji. About seals. About fathers who mistook pressure for shaping steel. About a future where Hinata almost died for a confession he had not earned in this life.

He kept the door closed.

"Same time tomorrow?" he asked instead.

Hinata looked at him as if the question had created a room she had not known existed.

"If you want," she said.

"I asked because I want."

This time she held his gaze. Only for a second.

Still.

"Then yes."

She left through the cedars with her jacket over one arm and her posture a little less folded than when he had arrived.

Naruto opened the salve only after she was gone. It smelled sharp and clean, probably mixed by hand rather than bought from the hospital. Practical. Thoughtful. Not dramatic. He spread a little over the bruise on his forearm and hissed when warmth sank into sore muscle.

Hinata had given him help and left before he could turn it into a debt.

He liked her even more for that.

Dangerous did not mean wrong.

It meant handle with both hands.

He tested the shoulder correction once before leaving. Slow breath. Weight first. Chakra second. The flare still came, but later. Late enough that someone without white eyes might miss it.

Hinata had not given him victory. She had given him a better question to ask his own body.

The gift was rarer than praise.

Tomorrow, if she came, he would ask about footwork first. Not her clan. Not her future. Not the feelings another timeline had promised him.

Footwork.

People trusted better when you started where they had chosen to stand.

Naruto stood alone in Training Ground Five and felt the old story shift under his feet. Hinata had looked first for years. This time, he had looked back before needing a battlefield to teach him her name.
