Chapter 59:

Rivalry With Rules

Naruto: Shadow Clone System

Mission update is live.

Get comfortable. The village is watching.

✦

Sasuke hated rules more when they were useful.

Pointless rules could be ignored. Stupid rules could be beaten, mocked, or stepped around until they became someone else's problem. Useful rules had the indecency to stand between a person and exactly the mistake he wanted to make.

Kakashi's new training rules were useful.

That made them intolerable.

"No full-contact sparring until the medic clears Sasuke's shoulder," Kakashi said.

Sasuke stared at him across Training Ground Three with one arm already wrapped and the other hand resting too close to his kunai pouch. "It is cleared."

Sakura, seated beside the supply kit, lifted a clipboard without looking up. "It is not."

"You are not the medic."

"No," she said. "I am the person who wrote down what the medic said because you tried to leave before she finished."

Naruto leaned over the clipboard. Sakura had drawn boxes. Actual boxes. Names, bandages, range of motion, bleeding, dizziness, chakra wobble, and a column labeled lies attempted.

"You made injury logs," he said.

"I made memory external."

"Terrifying."

"Thank you."

Kakashi looked proud, which probably meant civilization had entered its final stage. "Medical authority outranks pride inside this training ground."

"My pride has a higher rank," Sasuke said.

"Your pride is under observation."

The rule should have been funny. It might have been, before Wave. Now the word observation carried edges. Two Academy staff stood near the path with a signed training authorization. A civilian carpenter passed with a bundle of stakes and slowed when he saw orange. Someone had chalked Team Seven's reserved hour on the board by the gate. Supervised. Logged. Allowed, but watched.

Reputation opened doors.

It also put names on them.

Kakashi tied small bells to wrists, ankles, weapon pouches, and once, for reasons he refused to explain, Naruto's hood. The drill was movement without noise while maintaining chakra control. Any bell meant reset. Any chakra flare above Sakura's marked threshold meant reset. Any argument longer than ten seconds meant both arguers ran laps.

Naruto and Sasuke ran many laps.

Sakura ran none.

This offended them both.

"She argues," Naruto said during lap six.

"Strategically," Kakashi replied from behind his book.

"That distinction feels corrupt."

"Become strategically annoying."

Sasuke's breathing stayed even beside him. "Impossible. You lack strategy."

"I am building some right now."

"Where?"

"In secret."

"Convenient."

They ran another lap because arguing about argument rules still counted as arguing.

The real drill began after their legs were irritated enough to stop believing in dignity. Sakura drew a grid in charcoal across the dirt. Kakashi placed three markers in a triangle and tied one bell to the center rope between them.

"Three-step exchange," Sakura said. "No direct hits. Touch markers only. If either of you uses the injury as bait before we discuss it, I write it down as an attempted stupidity."

"That is not a medical term," Sasuke said.

"It is now."

Naruto grinned despite the sweat on his jaw. "History is being made."

Sasuke ignored him too hard, which meant he had heard every word.

Kakashi raised one hand.

Drop.

Naruto moved low, two steps left, feint with the right hand, chakra in his soles for the sudden angle Hinata had shown him. Not the whole correction. Not even close. Just weight first, chakra second, shoulder quiet enough that the flare arrived late instead of announcing him like a festival drum.

Sasuke read the old version and cut him off a half-step too early.

Naruto wanted to celebrate.

That was the first mistake.

He sent one clone across Sasuke's injured side without calling it. One clone, minimal chakra, feedback small enough to manage. The bell on Naruto's hood stayed silent. The clone reached for the back marker.

Sasuke pivoted anyway.

His elbow stopped an inch from the clone's throat. His shoulder pulled tight under the bandage, and for one sharp second pain crossed his face before pride killed it.

The clone vanished.

Feedback snapped into Naruto's skull, light and ugly.

"Reset," Sakura said.

"Bell did not ring," Naruto said.

"Shoulder compensation. Unreported clone. Chakra spike above mark two. Sasuke changed weight through the bad side." She tapped three places on the clipboard. "Reset."

Sasuke's mouth flattened. "I could have finished it."

"With a worse injury."

"Temporary."

"Permanent if you keep treating your body like an enemy witness."

Naruto looked at her. "That was vivid."

"Wave improved my metaphors."

No one laughed. The carpenter at the path had stopped pretending not to listen. The Academy staff member nearest him marked something on a slate.

Supervised meant someone would remember.

Kakashi closed his book with one finger still holding the page. "Again. Slower."

"Slower loses," Sasuke said.

"Slower teaches. Losing is extra."

They reset.

This time Naruto called the clone before forming it. Sasuke did not like the courtesy. That was fine; courtesy and permission were different tools, and both made proud people itch. Naruto kept the footwork small. The flare softened, not gone, and he hated that the improvement made him feel grateful to a girl who was not even here.

Same time tomorrow, Hinata had said. Not Byakugan advice on command. Not a free answer whenever Team Seven ran into a wall.

No. She had not promised training on demand. She had agreed to a morning because she chose it. The footwork belonged to the lesson she offered, not to Naruto's need to win against Sasuke.

He put that thought down before it grew teeth.

Sasuke caught him anyway.

Not completely. Naruto touched the left marker. Sasuke touched the center rope. Both bells trembled without sound.

Sakura leaned forward.

Kakashi's visible eye curved. "Again."

"Result?" Naruto asked.

"Training."

"Training lacks competitive clarity."

"Then suffer artistically."

Sasuke looked at Sakura. "Write that down."

"I write useful things."

"Write that down twice," Naruto said.

Sakura's pencil did not move. "I am writing predictable under verbal bait."

Naruto considered objecting, then noticed Sasuke was looking pleased in the smallest possible way.

"You too," Sakura added.

The pleasure died. Better.

They worked until sweat made the bells slippery and resentment became too tired to maintain sharp posture. Naruto won two exchanges cleanly. Sasuke won three. Four collapsed when Sakura declared them both dead for ignoring an imaginary civilian who had wandered into the path.

"Imaginary civilians are demanding," Naruto said, hands on knees.

"Real ones are worse," Sakura replied.

That was Wave speaking.

No one argued.

During the break, Sasuke sat beneath a tree and unwrapped his shoulder with more aggression than necessary. The wound had closed, but bruising spread yellow and purple under the skin. Naruto sat nearby, leaving enough space for pride to breathe.

"You are not hiding that from Sakura."

"I am not hiding it."

"You are facing away from the medic's clipboard with your body between her and evidence."

"Coincidence."

"Bad liar."

Sasuke retied the bandage. His fingers were precise until they were not. "You warned me about the snake."

Naruto's humor quieted.

"Yes."

"Is he stronger than Kakashi?"

The right answer had too many doors. The useful answer was cruel.

"Yes."

Sasuke's fingers stopped.

"Different scale," Naruto said.

"And he wants the Sharingan."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because some people look at bloodlines and see doors they can steal."

Sasuke's expression went very still. Too close to clan graves. Too close to Itachi without saying the name.

"Does he know about me already?"

"Probably."

"Because of Wave?"

"Wave made everyone louder."

Sasuke looked toward Kakashi, who appeared to be reading while actually listening. "And you?"

"Also louder."

Sasuke pulled the knot tight. "Then the field splits."

"That is the least comforting version of teamwork I have ever heard."

"It is still teamwork."

Unfortunately, yes.

Sakura joined them with water and did not ask permission to sit. "What are you two plotting?"

"Mutual danger," Naruto said.

"Be more specific."

"The snake," Sasuke said.

Her expression tightened. Not panic. Not surprise. A drawer opening in her head. "Then say it with me here."

That was Sakura's new habit. Not asking permission to belong in dangerous conversations.

Before Wave, Naruto might have mistaken her for someone still waiting for the story to make her important. That had been lazy of him, and worse, insulting. Sakura did not need destiny to hand her relevance. She needed information, room, and enough irritation to weaponize both.

"The snake may target Sasuke during the exam," Naruto said.

"May," Sakura repeated.

"May."

"Name?"

"Not here."

Her eyes flicked toward the observers at the path, then to Kakashi, then back. She understood faster than Naruto deserved.

"Threat category?"

"High. Patient. Interested in bodies as tools."

Sasuke looked at Naruto as if every word was a debt with interest. "You know more."

"Yes."

"You are not saying more."

"No."

Anger moved across Sasuke's face, clean and familiar. "Because you think I cannot handle it?"

"Because I cannot prove it without handing you a nightmare shaped like certainty."

Kakashi arrived without seeming to cross the distance. His book was gone. "Naruto."

"I know."

"Say what you can support."

The old pattern wanted to open. Timeline, names, curse mark, forest, teeth, a tower room with too many choices. It would feel like control for almost three breaths. Then it would turn everyone into a reaction to Naruto's fear.

He hated restraint more when it was useful.

"He likes ambition," Naruto said. "Isolation. Pride. Bloodline techniques. People who think pain proves they are chosen. If he approaches, it will not sound like kidnapping first. It will sound like being recognized."

Sasuke did not look away.

Sakura wrote three words on the clipboard: recognition as bait.

Kakashi read them upside down and nodded once.

The afternoon shifted to chakra control after that, because Kakashi believed discomfort should have structure. He set three bowls of water on posts at different heights. The task was simple in the way traps were simple: reach each post, touch the rim, leave the water still, return without ringing bells.

"This is absurd," Sasuke said.

"Fundamentals under irritation," Kakashi replied.

"So absurd."

"Yes."

Naruto liked the drill despite himself. It favored restraint. That made it offensive but useful. The pressure behind his ribs gathered after the sixth clean run, the place where the old system sometimes turned pain into a menu.

This time there was no cold box in his sight.

No prize.

No neat route with a title cold enough to make a person forget the cost.

Only memory, body, and a thought shaped like a warning: if fear made him chase strength by injury, that was not training. That was surrender with better posture.

He told them anyway.

Not all of it. Enough.

"There is a bad path here," Naruto said. "The kind where we call damage progress because it works once."

Sakura's face hardened. "No."

"I did not say yes."

"You looked at the option too long."

Sasuke's gaze fixed on him. "Damage works."

Kakashi's voice cut through the clearing before Naruto could answer. "Damage teaches. It also lies."

Sasuke looked at him.

"Pressure can reveal a skill," Kakashi said. "Chasing pressure until something breaks is how villages manufacture ghosts and call them successful."

Naruto thought of Root.

Sasuke thought of something else.

Sakura thought of Wave.

The clearing held all three silences.

"Then we keep the limits," Naruto said.

Sasuke looked offended by agreement.

"For now," he said.

"For now is acceptable," Kakashi replied.

They ran one final exchange under those limits. No hidden clones. No direct hits. No using the bad shoulder unless Sakura called clearance. Naruto lost it cleanly anyway.

Sasuke baited him with a half-open angle near the injured side, not moving through the shoulder this time, just letting Naruto see the possibility. Naruto hesitated because real enemies loved using other people's wounds as handles. That half-breath was enough. Sasuke tapped the marker at Naruto's hip before Naruto could recover.

Naruto stared at the touched marker.

"I hate that."

"Then stop answering the wound first," Sasuke said.

"Do not make me learn from you after losing."

"Lose less."

Sakura wrote something down.

"If that says poor emotional discipline, I object."

"It says predictable under protective stress."

Kakashi hummed. "Accurate."

Naruto looked at Sasuke's shoulder and then at Sakura's clipboard. Accurate. Annoying enough to save his life later.

Sakura did not let the note sit as private humiliation. She turned the clipboard around so he could see the line beneath it.

Countermeasure: assign protection calls by role, not emotion.

"If Sasuke is baited, I call it," she said. "If I am baited, Sasuke calls it. If a civilian is baited, you call it because you read crowd movement fastest."

Naruto read the line twice.

Role, not emotion.

"You wrote that fast."

"I thought of it during Wave."

"And did not mention it?"

"We were busy nearly dying."

Sasuke glanced at the clipboard. "Reasonable."

Sakura's eyebrows rose.

"Do not make a face," Sasuke said.

"I am making history."

"Make it quietly."

Naruto watched them and felt the rivalry shift again, making room for a third point no one could ignore without getting hit by paperwork.

Near evening, when sweat dried cold and even Sakura admitted more training would turn sloppy, Kakashi dismissed them.

Then he ruined it.

"A larger opportunity is approaching."

Naruto groaned. "That sentence never starts a vacation."

Sakura's eyes narrowed. "Mission?"

"Exam," Sasuke said.

Kakashi looked at him.

Sasuke shrugged. "People are watching rookies. Sensei is training fundamentals under irritation. Naruto said Chunin Exams before and then stopped saying it too carefully. It is obvious."

"Annoyingly good," Naruto muttered.

Kakashi's eye smiled. "Rest tonight. Think carefully about whether you want to become chuunin."

"Want?" Sasuke repeated.

"Yes. Want. Not prove. Not chase. Want."

The word followed them out of the training ground. Naruto looked at Sasuke's bandaged shoulder, Sakura's clipboard, his own hands, and the old temptation to turn fear into a route.

Rules were useful.

That did not make them comfortable.

It made them necessary.

That night, Naruto wrote overcast on a scrap of paper and taped it above his sink. Not because he planned to forget. Because fear turned smart people into improvisers, and improvisers loved pretending their first panic was inspiration.

He added three lines beneath it before sleep.

Tell Kakashi before acting alone.

Warn Sakura before assuming she needs rescue.

Let Sasuke choose, then make the wrong choice expensive for anyone trying to own it.

The handwriting looked ugly.

That helped.

Pretty promises were too easy to admire and too easy to ignore. He brushed his teeth under the word, hated it, and left it there.

Some restraints deserved to be visible before they had to hold.
