Chapter 20:

Light Nin

Dance of Thorns

Rell remembered Alicia's Light Nin. Shadow Nin was rare, but a Light Nin user was something that only appeared once every decade or so. Alicia used Light Nin for many things, from traveling faster than the eye could see, to creating powerful barriers, healing wounds, and revealing the location of things far away from herself.

But Light Nin also had one ability that irritated him; it's ability to reveal a Shadow Nin user's location when they were cloaked. Rell had come close to hitting her Alicia during sparring matches, only to have his location revealed by a sudden flash of Light Nin. It was as if Light Nin itself opposed Shadow.

Hina took a graceful stance, her blade pointed towards the sky as she held it before her body. The frills of her snow white uniform fluttered in the wind. Added with the fact that she still wore heels, it looked more as if she were a high class woman more ready for a dance than  battle. Light Nin runes danced around her, fluttering freely like leaves.

The Shadow turned to her, tilting its head, before craning it towards Rell. Rell could feel its gaze locked on him.

"Rena, Rin." Hina directed, focusing even more Light Nin. "I need supporting fire. The rest of you, do not engage. It'll kill you in an instant." She directed.

She lowered her blade, pointing it directly at the Shadow. it turned to look at her, still standing casually with the gigantic club-sword over its shoulder.

"Fire now!" She ordered.

Rin and Rena channeled their Nin, taking aim and frying a barrage of fire and ice. The Shadow moved quickly, driving its weapon down into the ground and using it as shield against the fire. Hina channeled Light, flickering next to the Shadow and driving the tip of her blade into it. It narrowly dodge, but not without Hina clipping its side. The creature howled in pain, before slamming its weapon down on Hina with impossible speed. She dodged, flicker-stepping again to the side of the creature, preparing another strike. It reacted to her, swinging at her and causing her to flicker again. And again, and again. It moved too quickly for her to attack.

"It's so fast!" Elena noted.

Hina flickered back in front of the group, gasping in exhaustion. The Shadow turned to look at her, returning to its neutral stance.

"That was incredible..." Mira noted. "If any of us were within range of that thing's attacks, we'd be dead right now..."

"Major." Luna looked towards the tired Hina. "Let us help."

"No!" She directed. "It's too much for you younger generations. I've seen this type of Shadow tear through Sisters in the second generation!"

The Shadow turned and looked at Rell again.

"I've never seen one like a human before..." Rell noted, tightening his grip on his sword. "It's unsettling."

"Damn." Hina cursed, channeling her Light Nin into several elemental swords. "I need more covering fire!" She screamed.

"Roger!" Rin and Rena responded in unison.

The creature blocked the barrage again as Hina flickered near it, engaging with another sword strike. The Shadow blocked the attack with its own weapon. Hina smirked, letting the elemental blades near her flare out and redirect themselves on all the Shadow's undefended sides. The creature flared its barrier, the swords clattering against it but leaving sizable cracks.

"Damn!" Rin's voice cursed over the light orbs.

The creature screeched, assaulting Hina with an incredible flurry of weapon strikes. She flickered, her body fading in and out in bright flashes of light as she dodged. An attack caught her. She was barely able to parry the blow away; from the speed and power it most likely would have severed her in half. The weapon clipped her side, tearing her uniform and soaking the white outfit with a splash of blood. She endured the pain, flickering a short distance away from the monster.

"Been a while since a Shadow has hurt me..." She muttered, touching her side and bringing up crimson colored fingers.

"Major!" Rena cried out.

"Stay back!" She raised her hand, stopping Rena.

The Shadow turned away from her, leaving its back open as it faced Rell. Hina took the opportunity to channel her Light Nin, using Miracle Healing to slowly patch up the wound. The creature gestured to Rell with its clawed finger, compelling him closer.

"What the?" Elena shook her head in confusion. "I've never seen a Shadow taunt someone before."

"Hey Major!" Rell cupped his hands, yelling at the Sister. "You're not going to be able to beat this thing alone! Let us help!"

"You don't understand what this thing is!" she yelled back. "This Shadow is only below a leviathan in power!"

"Rell's right!" Elena yelled. "What point is there in us fighting if we don't risk our lives?"

The Shadow watched them, still facing Rell. It gestured again, growling.

"Son of..." He cursed. "Major, if it gets impatient, it's going to kill us all anyway!"

"I concur!" Rin over the Light orb said. "Alpha Squad, this is an order! Support the Major and help her to take this thing down!"

"Captain! You..." Hina said. "Fine!" She flared her Light Nin, summoning another row of elemental blades.

"Let's go!" Elena yelled.

"Right!" Mira directed.

"Alpha Squad." Luna muttered.

"I'm here too!" Rena added.

"Follow my lead!" Rell said, rushing forward using Shadow sprint, Elena trailing closely behind.
