Chapter 1:
Life In This Strange World
I’ve never understood the appeal of coffee, my viewpoint has always been that coffee is just boiling hot bitter bean juice. The last time I’ve ever tried this stuff was back in high school because I wanted to seem cool to all my trendy friends. I don’t even think I’ve really felt the effects of caffeine before as well, was it supposed to make me feel more hyperactive or awake?
“I can’t reach the god-damn bell…” Yeo muttered to herself, on her toes trying her best to find the bell on the barista’s kitchen counter.
“It hurts being short huh.”
“Shut up and ring the bell dude, I want my coffee.”

Maybe my taste buds have matured who knows. Maybe I’ve matured and become one of those trendy guys who write novels at coffee stores on their laptops.
I might as well give it another try, there’s no harm in that isn’t there?

God this is gross, it literally tastes like mud…
“Oh, sweet holy nectar of Jesus.”
Seems like Yeo enjoys it. Doesn’t really surprise me though, almost everything about her screams that she’s the type of person who enjoys coffee. Listing them off I already see a puffer jacket, a grey beanie, glasses with circle lenses and to top it all off… She’s a journalist.
“God damn hipster…”
“Hey, what’s wrong with being trendy-” Pulling away from her precious cup Yeo began glaring at me, noticing the almost untouched cup of coffee in front of me, looking back and from between me and the cup, “Dude, this is premium stuff, stop being a baby and finish your stupid cup.”
“Tastes bitter, I don’t like it.”
“Maybe if you weren’t so lame then your taste buds would finally develop, you stupid child.”
“Coffee tastes terrible, so I don’t want to drink it.”
“Come on, coffee is great, it’s cool, you can add sugar to make it taste sweeter, and it’s cheaper than meth.”
“Are… wait… you’ve tried meth?”
“No, but it would be funny if I did wouldn’t it?”
What a problematic sense of humour this girl has…
My eye began to feel intensely itchy, I tried rubbing it in response, but it seemed as if the itch wouldn’t go away, “Dammit, it’s my eye again.”
Finishing her cup of coffee Yeo stretched and yawned, watching me rub my eye again as if it was a routine thing to do, “Again? Jeez, never knew being colourblind was that annoying.”
“I’m not colourblind, it’s only temporary I itch my eye, it’s the same for you isn’t it?”
“Nope… say, what colour is my hair right now Mr colourblind?”
“Uhh… blue…”
“I feel like I could pull off blue hair.”
“Yeah, of course, you think that hipster.”
“Eat some paint nerd.”

“B- Brother!” The strange man yelled as loud as he could amongst the car horns and traffic.
He stood proud and tall as he walked around the cars carrying someone on his back, it seemed as if the boy he had been carrying was lifeless in a way, though he stilled breathed his expression was lifeless, his eyes blinking slowly once every few minutes as his arms and legs swung side to side with every step taken, “I never expected these creatures could ever make something like this.”

Jin looked around excited, his eyes glowing like a child at a candy store. He noticed a small food stand in the corner of his eye and rushed towards it, “Hey mate, what do you sell here?”
“Hot dogs, they’re $1 each, are you hungry friend?” The man took out a hot dog from the cart and presented it to him, covering it with onions and sauce.
“Ahh, snags, that sounds great man.” Jin took the hot dog from his hand and began eating it, chewing and talking with his mouth open.
“No, no, no… they’re hot dogs… that’ll be $1.”
“Yeah that’s what I said, thanks mate.” In one big bite, he ate the rest of the hot dog and carried on his way with the boy on his back exploring the city without paying. The largest sparkling light caught his attention, a large neon sign for an arcade, “Brother! Look! Video games! You love video games!”
Running inside he sat the boy on one of the seats, “Play, play play!” Jin patted him on the back as his face laid down on the arcade machine’s panel.
“Button, eh, like this, see?” Jin rapidly pressed all the buttons with his palm and then held the boy’s wrist, guiding him to press the buttons. He slowly began making slow motions with his arm and began slapping the buttons with his forearms like a fish out of water still lying face down on the machine.
“YEAHHHHHHH! LET’S GOOOOOOOOOOOO!” Jin enthusiastically clapped and cheered as the boy slowly got up and slapped the buttons with both of his hands, doubling his button slapping efficiency twice while waving his arms up and down like a Muppet as an employee slowly approached them, “Sir… the game won’t start until you put a coin in…”
Jin glared at the employee as the boy continued to wave his arms around like a Muppet, “Shut up nerd, can’t you see my brother and I are bonding right now?”
“Uh… uh-huh…. Okay, sir…”
As the employee walked away Jin began to softly grin as he whispered in the boy’s ear, “Yo Miki, do the thing.”
“Okayeh!” Miki attempted to give Jin a thumbs up before swinging his arm in a full 360 motion and slapping the screen, hard enough to make a loud smacking sound but not enough to cause a crack in the screen.
“Hmm… did it work!?” Jin wondered as he pulled Miki away from the screen, “Haha, sweet!” The arcade machine began blasting music, moving on towards the character select screen.
