Chapter 9:

Speaking Vanyan

The Princess And Her Warmonger

A Guide to Vanyan Speech

- By Alzword Darksen

As one might guess, Vanyan speech is somewhat confusing. Yet, if one were to read this simple guide, they will be able to understand Vanyan speech perfectly, no matter where you live in Nostalisk.

Vanyans are one of the oldest Factions alive in Nostalisk, and one of the oldest races too. Formally being apart of the Faction known as Vanya, Vanyans get their language from them. Although Vanya speech is long lost, from records me and my fellow scholars have managed to find, it seems they spoke something similar to 'Old English'. As such, Vanyan speech, or language, is similar to Old English, but more different than its former Vanya form.

Despite the accent and some word change the Vanyan speech has, one must remember that it is extremely similar to Common Speech, which means, aside from some cultural differences, Vanyans mean exactly what they say. There is no double meaning for words unless if it comes down to Wings, which are used to describe both armies and legions in the Vanyan language. So, with that said, let's begin.

Thy: If one were to ever here a Vanyan speak in their language, they will, without a doubt, here them say 'Thy'. Thy is one of the two words that often replace 'the'. Only, thy has many different uses. Thy is often used when describing or talking to someone. Some examples are;

"Is thy not a warrior?" "For thy cause." "Thy is giving me a headache." and "A-Wing and B-Wing are thy frontline fighters in this fight."

Now, there are still some other uses to it. When talking to someone, or even talking to you, you might hear a Vanyan say "Fix 'Thyself'!" or something along the lines. Thyself replaces yourself but not myself, which is replaced by 'Thineself'. Surprisingly enough, thineself isn't used often in Vanyan speech, as most use the more common but less formal 'Me'.

Thee: Thee is the Vanyan word describing an action in past tense, and often replaces 'They'. While I could go into detail about how it is used, it is better if I show you examples instead;

"W-Wing has moved to thee frontlines so are flank is clear." "If thy does not fix thyself/thar behavior, thee will find horrible food to be the least of thar worries."

Thar: Thar doesn't replace 'The' in Vanyan language, but instead replaces 'Their'. Surprisingly, 'Thar' isn't used when Vanyans are speaking to people that don't speak Vanyan. As such, one will most likely never heard a Vanyan say 'Thar' before. If they have and they aren't Vanyan, and they are talking to you or someone else, then the Vanyan is most likely very angry.

"If thee think thar armies can best Vanyan might, thee has another thing coming." "Thar cockiness shall be thar own undoing."
