A Fleeting Hope

“It’s unfortunate, but there’s nothing else I can do for you.”

The gentle voice that carried those words belonged to a being I could only describe as a God that saved me, and now has abandoned me.

“Why?! You did it once before, why not-?”

“I gave you another chance. Few others in this world are ever granted that privilege and you wasted it.”

I heard my heart shattered in my chest.

“Was…ted?”

I…wasted my second chance at life?

No, no, no, no, no!

“How’d I waste it?! I tried, didn’t I? I tried to do what you wanted and live a happy life, and look what happened!”

The crisp winter air was carried up to the rooftop with a powerful gust of wind, whipping my hair across my face drenched in tears.

I shivered and almost lost my balance on the roof’s edge, but I steadied myself and yelled at God again.

“Please! Please, just once more!”

“I cannot.”

“Why?!”

Stop it.

God is looking at me with only pity.

She’s…given up on me, hasn’t she?

I laughed bitterly as tears fall down my face once more.

…No matter what I say, she’s not going to listen.

I bit my lip and took one step backwards; God panicked and reached out her hand.

“Goodbye.”

“Wait.” A deep voice whispered in my ear as hands pushed against my back.

Startled, I spun around and saw a bewitchingly beautiful smile upon a woman I could only describe as a demon.

“What are you doing here?”

The demon laughed. “I’m doing what you’re refusing to.” The demon turned to me and I felt myself pulled into its hauntingly vacant red eyes. “I’m offering you another chance to redo your life.”

I, Akane Yuki, was given a second chance to redo my life by God and I was given a third chance by the Devil.
