Chapter 3:

Make a wish

As the dust settles

On a hill, not so far out from the camp Sky took note of how elegant Meredith looked standing there, her long blonde hair blowing in the breeze. It had been a few days since they had been chased through the woods, but now they were within the safe confines of Meredith's home. As she had explained, this place was one of the few rebel factions around the area.

Meredith had tried her best to fill Sky in on the history of the world, seeing as Sky's memory was still in a broken state. For some unknown reason they were also unable to obtain any prior knowledge of previous events, as that function was still unavailable. But, for now, Sky would have to rely on the information relayed to her from others around her.

As it turned out there were several camps comprised of people who were unable to afford, or weren't of a high enough status, to live in the Darkimsoon City. Some of these places were disguised as a rebel factions. Some of them had different views, along with different things they were rebelling against. But a lot of them, including the one they were staying in, had one thing in mind. To overthrow the Elite's in Darkimsoon.

The camp that they were at right night called themselves Night Cross. Sky was still yet to meet their leader, Jay, as they had been out on a hunting trip before both of them had arrived. But, if everything had gone well, the hunting party was to arrive back that day. Meredith spoke very highly of her, they had apparently known each other since they were children.

So while they waited Meredith pointed out a few key locations that could be seen atop this hill. Off in the distance, behind the camp, smoke could be seen rising up to the sky. That there was known as point zero, the first time the explosives were used. It was said that the Elite's were the cause of this, and the reason the plunged the world into chaos. This place was known as the Hollow Zone. Even after all these decades nobody could walk anywhere close to the place due to the radiation.

Behind them, in the opposite direction of the camp, a few dim lights could be seen as the sun gradually sunk behind the horizon. That was Darkimsoon City. Many had said that the lights coming from the city were so bright that anyone on the other side of the world could still see them.

As they continued to stare out at the sunset, a guard approached them. Thunk, who was also a faun, had been very good to them. Some people had been a little on edge since Sky had arrived. Even though they had been searching for robots like Sky some of them weren't so trusting.

"Meredith and Sky, your presence is requested back at the camp. Jay has returned!"

Meredith nodded in response and Thunk, an excited look in her eyes. Sky and Meredith looked at each other, she gave a warm smile to Sky before following after Thunk. Sky followed close behind, heading back towards the camp. Sky was intrigued about who this Jay was going to be like.

Many of the Night Cross folks were out and about now. Several of them chatting and laughing. Others looked to be setting up for some form of celebration in the central area. Over to the left, by the main set of tents, stood many of the officials of the group. One of them being the newly returned Jay. Unlike the others they had passed this group appeared to all be talking seriously among themselves

Jay was apparently good at what she did. She was a dryad after all. Her mossy hair swayed in the slight breeze. All the while the sunlight, as if attracted to her, shone off her gold brown skin. Not that Sky would know what it felt like, but Jay's skin looked as rough as bark. Almost like she could disguise herself as a tree if she stood still enough. But yet she still looked so nimble.

As they approached closer, the group quietened down. As if they didn't want them to hear the discussion they were just having.

"So this is the robot I've been hearing so much about!" Jay's face went from being serious to being friendly in seconds, her voice sounding like a beautiful wind chime. She clasped her hands before speaking again, looking at the group she had just been talking to. "Please leave us be for now, we'll discuss this further once we're done here."

They all dispersed, heading back into the crowd and celebrations. Thunk, who had followed Meredith and Sky all the way up here, also left with them. Thus leaving Sky and Meredith alone with the dryad. Jay's attention was now fully towards them, but it was mostly directed at Sky.

"So how functional is this robot?" Jay asked Meredith as she began taking a closer look at Sky.

"Not as much as I'd like but it'll work for what we need."

Jay nodded in response before grabbing Sky's arm. The dryad began inspecting every inch of the robot and it just accepted it. Sky was used to this by this point. A few of the inhabitants of Night Cross liked to get handsy. Some were a little too eager to give the robot a look over. Apparently there weren't many like Sky left on the planet.

"Well we can't really do much more tonight, so why don't you two go and enjoy the festivities. It's been a while since we had this good of a hunt. So this is all well deserved." Jay patted Meredith on the shoulder, while giving her a gentle smile, before heading back down the dirt path to join the others.

These folk sure knew how to throw a party. They may not have much, but everyone made sure the night was enjoyable. Many of which seemed to be enjoying the beer that had been brewed. Especially with the way that they were stumbling around everywhere. Apparently that was what they called "dancing". Some of them got a little close to the bonfire, a few getting nipped by the flames. The others were enjoying a hearty meal, a giant boar of which the hunting party had brought back.

Sky didn't really feel like joining in on the festivities. They were unable to drink or eat anything and, even still, not that many of the folk here were still cautious around Sky. But none of them seemed brave enough to let Sky join in. Apart from Meredith, along with Jay and Thunk, Sky didn't know anyone else here.

As the robot watched on something caught its attention. A bit further away for all the commotion stood a humanoid creature, their purple eyes shone through the darkness. Something seemed familiar about this creature, but Sky couldn't quite place it. They was sure that it had seen this person somewhere before.

Whoever it was seemed to notice Sky looking at them. They tilted their head towards the tents before making their way towards the area. Sky looked back at the festivities. It didn't think it would be missed from here. Including Meredith who was a little incapacitated at that moment.

As Sky arrived back at the tents it noticed that there was a third person there. It was Jay. She was talking to whoever Sky had just seen in the shadows. Now that they were in a better light, Sky could get a better look at them. They looked close to a human, but if it wasn't for the fact that they had their back turned to Sky, it wouldn't have noticed the fairy like wings tucked behind them.

The light from the torches reflected of the wings and rainbows colors flickered over the purple and blue transparent patches. Her long, golden blonde hair was something to behold. It looked so delicate and soft. The fairy's hair seemed to flow majestically as she turned around to face the robot.

"This will have to wait til the morning. Meredith is currently incapacitated." Sky heard the end of the conversation as, once Jay said that, it immediately went quiet. Jay took a quick glance at the fairy before bid her adieu, leaving in a haste. There was another slight awkward silence before the fairy spoke up.

"I'm glad to see you guys made it out safely. Those were some very tricky, stubborn guards after you." It suddenly dawned on Sky as to why the fairy standing before them seemed so familiar. She was the very same fairy that had saved them from the patrol!

It was also nice that Sky was now able to understand the fairy. Her voice sounded just as beautiful as it did when she spoke in her fairy language. But Sky could tell that the fairy wasn't there for just pleasantries.

"Thank you for your help. It was very much appreciated." The fairy nodded and smiled in response, acknowledging Sky's thanks.

"We also haven't been formally introduced. My name is Abby. I believe Meredith did mention that she named you Sky?"

"Yes that is indeed the name that she gave me."

"Apologies for not being straight forward with you as of right now. We're not sure if somebody is tapped into you program and listening in on us. And we can't take the risk right now. We'll fill Meredith in on the plan in the morning. But in the mean time I think I will join the others." With that Abby parted ways, leaving Sky standing there.

The next morning it was a little difficult convincing Meredith to wake up, let alone leave the comfort of her bed. But Jay had dealt with Meredith's hangovers one too many times and a cold bucket of water could work wonders. So there Meredith now stood, drenched and shivering, all the while glaring daggers at Jay.

"Now that you're finally here, get dressed! Abby has some important info to share with us." A smirk appeared on Jays face as those dark green eyes gave her that all knowing mischievous look. Jay quickly ducked out before Meredith could do anything to her.

Sometime later, with much swearing from Meredith, the three of them were we cooped up in one of the tents. Jay made sure nobody else was listening, more specifically the robot, before closing up then tent. Jay give a knowing nod to Abby before she began to speak.

" We know of somebody that can possibly help us with the robot. I've already relayed this information to Jay but I'll tell it again for you. There is a man, a mechanic, who is amazing with his work. But this man is very hard to track down. Until a few days ago. After receiving a valuable tip I found him hiding out in a town known as Sweetinmoor."

"That won't be too hard to get to. I've made many trips to and from there. Although I haven't visited there in many months so it'll be nice go there after all this time." A glint appeared in Meredith eyes as she reminisced about the old times where she had spent many times as a child playing around in this town.

"This is no time to go down memory lane or go sightseeing. You must remember our mission." Jay said sternly. Meredith snapped out of it and smiled at her sheepishly.

"I would love to catch up more and continue my stay here but something came up in my own faction this morning. So I must make haste and head back as they are in need of urgent help."

Before leaving Abby handed Meredith a piece of parchment. While clasping her hands Abby leaned forward and whispered something in Meredith ear. With that, and within a blink of an eye, Abby transformed back into her fairy form before flying off into the distance.

As night fell the robot and the elf could be seen leaving the town. It took them many days and nights to get to Sweetinmoor. But thankfully they were a bit more prepared for the trek. The patrols seemed to be more active after their last run in but they were able to keep out of danger, for the most part. But it wasn't anything they couldn't handle.
