Chapter 4:

Mitsuko-San A Victim Once More

The Botanical Research Club

Fulvius-kun's communication style has surprised me. I wasn't expecting him to be so straightforward while he appeared to be somewhat secretive. Also, I never would have guessed he was involved in some sort of cultic practice, but honestly, this excites me. I'm even more smitten with him now. Of course, it wasn't a complete lie when I said I had feelings for him, although it was a distraction protecting me from him finding out about my other hidden desires.

I exit the bathroom, leaving the towel on the holder. The temperature appears to have dropped while I was in the shower. After that, I go to my room and play sudoku on my phone while listening to soothing music. Naturally, I am emerged in my thoughts as always. Could he have a crush on me as well, or was he just bluffing to get information from me? What about Mitsuko-san, the class president? My head begins to hurt, so I go to the kitchen and boil some water. I'm going to make myself some mint tea. I can hear the message beep.

If it's Mitsuko, I genuinely don't intend to respond, but to my surprise, Fulvius—not Mitsuko—is the one who has written the message. My fingers tremble as I touch the message on the preview screen and begin to slide it down. "Today was enjoyable. We meet tomorrow after school at the same location?" He writes. I'm writing to tell him that I agree that we should meet again tomorrow. The tea helps me unwind, and I gradually drift off to sleep.

I am now entering the location of the hidden club. I see Fulvius hydrating the plant pots. While one appears empty, the other starts to resemble a nine-day-old sprout. I casually approach him and enquire as to why his plant has already grown so much. In a roundabout way, I'm mocking his magical abilities.

"Listen, no matter what happens, you can't tell this to anyone. I'm about to reveal the secret of these sprouts to you. It is not their rate of expansion," he approaches me with a concerned expression on his face. I can feel the warmth in his voice as he whispers in my ear.
"Are you serious? They generate dust that has the ability to dissolve materials?" I am being sceptical.

"Yes, because the spell altered their chemical structure. Observe this now," he says using his fingers to squeeze the bean. Following that, some kind of green dust is spilled, completely destroying the remaining plant.
"Be careful with it," he warns, "It can cause serious burns to the skin and has enormous destructible power, as you have just seen."
"What are you going to do with that dust?" I ask.

"Naturally, have fun. See for yourself how terrified our classmates become. Don't worry, I'm not crazy enough to do anything serious. Just a little bit of mischief will brighten up the mundane school routine," he turns to face me with an evil grin. Is he beginning to reveal his genuine self?

I quickly check to see if anyone is watching and say firmly: "OK, we'll do it, we'll produce even more of such dust because I'm really curious about how it works."
"Try to use some other spell, not only the one for dissolvement." I suggest because I think the idea is pretty exiting.

"I knew you'd say yes. Who said I wasn't going to do it?" In addition to a small manual, Fulvius brings a huge bag of beans.
"We'll plant about twenty bean pots. Half will be enchanted by the same spell. The other half will receive something different."
"These stickers could come in handy. Green indicates disintegration, whereas red indicates that we are unsure of what will happen." He opens his schoolbag and displays the stickers to me. Every pot needs a specific sticker attached to it.

The following day, during the main break, Fulvius-kun does something despicable to Mitsuko. He destroys her new drawing of himself with the same type of dust he used to demonstrate the spell's activity to me. In addition, he destroys her second pencil case, which is only filled with crayons, to prevent her from drawing another for today.

When Mitsuko-san returns to her seat, she begins searching for the drawing in a panic. She looks around to see who could have taken it. She purposefully left it in the classroom this time, hoping Fulvius-kun would notice. She blushes as she thinks of that.

"You won't find it, Mitsuko-san. I have taken it." I can't help but notice something suspicious about his gaze when he speaks to Mitsuko. Either he despises her or he secretly likes her, but he shows it in an unusual, almost sadistic manner.
"Does that mean you like it? I did a fantastic job, right?" she asks, blushing even more."
No, you drew me uglier than I am. Besides, I have taken it so I could throw it in the thrash later."

When Mitsuko first hears it, she puts on a tough exterior, but a moment later, she can barely contain her tears. She gets closer to where Fulvius-kun and I are. Mitsuko slaps him instead of crying.
"Go wash your face, you immature child," he says rashly.
Mitsuko leaves the classroom and spends the rest of the school break outside. Alone.
"You didn't have to do that." I say sincerely, feeling a twinge of remorse for Mitsuko-san.
On the other hand, Fulvius doesn't appear to be affected by Mitsuko's feelings at all.

"I assumed you didn't like her, so why bother?" He inquires without being concerned.
He has a good control over his rage.
"Well, yes, I dislike her, but I don't think this was very nice of you. Why did you do it?" I ask him this as I fix my gaze on him.
Despite the fact he didn't overreact to Mitsuko slapping his face, nevertheless, Fulvius sank in my eyes.
"I did it because I wanted to. Besides, she's a naive bitch." he says.
