Chapter 11:

A Cry for Help

Seeking Utopia

An online meeting was set up between the President of Lapis and the three Ministers: Hazem (Minister of International affairs), Lin (Minister of Health) and Hugo (Minister of Science and Research), to discuss the current situation.

During the meeting Hazem and Lin brief the President and Hugo about what was discussed with officials from Neo Tapica earlier. “The disease seems to have started five months ago around the outskirts of Neo Tapica. But it gradually found its way to the mainland. As they were unable to control it anymore, they had to announce it. Given Lapis’s reputation; as a vanguard in research and development, they had reached out for our help. We agreed to coordinate internally first to see if we have the enough resources as well as other means to support and we will get back to them at the earliest.”

After a short pause, Hugo suddenly asks, “Just out of curiosity, did they share any information that they have gathered on this disease. Not much is mentioned in the news yet.” Lin responds to him in a calm tone, “This does seem to be a fatal disease-putting it simply. They say it could range between 2-3 weeks. The main symptoms identified so far are: purple/blue circles appearing on the skin, a fever, irritation, and insomnia. Those who have caught the disease thus far either died from it or were left with what seems to be permanent side effects.”

“By permanent side effects…” asks Hugo.

“Blindness, or some form of paralysis.”

“I see, thanks Lin.” said Hugo with a slight grin.

Lin acts indifferent; maintaining his usual calm expression. He tends to be wary of Hugo since he always seems to be a little unusual; as if he always had some scheme or ulterior motive in mind.

The President speaks up after staying quiet for a while, “Thank you Hazem and Lin for arranging the meetings with our troubled neighbors; as well as briefing us on this matter. I trust you will all come up with a suitable plan. Let’s try and relieve them of this disaster quickly- before it spreads further.”

They all nod in agreement, then Hugo says, “I will have someone arrange for a team of researchers to head there as soon as they can.” Lin looks at Hugo and asks, “You sound confident that we already have the solution for this.” Hugo gives a chuckle and responds, “My friend- you are as suspicious of me as ever. Sorry to disappoint but I’m not too confident yet. But I do believe we should act quick. This sounds like a deadly disease, we can’t have it spread now can we?” He glares at Lin as he said that. Lin does not get intimidated my his glare, he looks at him straight in the eye and calmly says, “You are right, but I’m also concerned for our people’s safety, we mustn’t be careless.”

“Do not worry, I will make sure they are briefed and are well informed about the disease-with whatever information we have so far. I will also be asking Sion for permission to send a team of Rangers as escort- just in case they encounter trouble while they are out of Lapis.”

The president nods and says, “That sounds like a good plan, please do so Hugo. And just as Lin said, we should proceed with utmost caution, we cannot afford to help spread the disease.”

“Well noted, good day gentlemen!” said Hugo as he closed the call.
