Chapter 21:

Mimicry (Part 1)

Bastion

For Liam-31 and Judas-12, the two weeks that passed during their stay at the camp was spent resting and gathering resources.

Liam-31, with the little mobility he had due to the encounter with the savage, used the two weeks to rehabilitate his body, strengthening himself by moving with his crutches and taking medicines prescribed by the doctor. Due to his enhanced body, his recovery time was short and quick, to the point where in just two weeks he was able to walk freely without his crutches.

Judas-12 had been helping the locals gather necessary resources for survival, and standing guard to eliminate any creatures that dared to lurk around the camp. His hearing had not yet fully recovered since the savage had impaired his ability to hear correctly, even despite his body's enhanced recovery abilities.

During their stay at the camp, there were no active attacks caused by creatures roaming the area. The occasional sighting of a mimic or an arachnae would be alerted from a guard, but nothing else, which Liam-31 found strange, as reports had indicated that the creatures in Japan were not shown to be dormant in nature.

Despite this, it had given the two bastions ample time to rest their bodies, Liam-31 deciding it would be their final day spent at the camp before moving on.

Waking up from the medical tent, Liam-31 instantly rose up from his bed as the doctor walked over to greet him.

"Good morning, Liam. How are you feeling?" The doctor asked.

"Fine." Liam-31 said bluntly.

"Good, good, your sharp personality seems to have stayed the same, despite your injuries." The doctor laughed, as Liam-31 stared at him with a blank expression.

"What is the report on my injury?" Liam-31 asked the doctor.

"Right. For the past two weeks since we've cared for and given you the ability to exercise your body, you've seemed to properly recover the spinal injury that had been inflicted on you. Of course, it would've taken almost six months for you to heal from an injury like that normally, but you're nothing but normal, are you?"

"I've recovered completely, then?" Liam-31 asked directly.

"Correct. You should be able to do just about anything you were able to do prior to your injury." The doctor responded.

"Good. What about my armor?"

"Luckily, we were able to completely recover your armor's functionality as well, repairing the shattered visor and broken armor plates. We have it just across the tent lying on a table."

"Got it." Liam-31 thanked the doctor before walking towards the table containing his armor, his helmet renewed with no visible dents or scratches, and his suit fixed to perfection, the grey paint that was previously withered away now restored.

Gearing up, Liam-31 now stood at a staggering 216 centimeters, the doctor having to look up to meet Liam-31's gaze, hidden behind his helmet's visor.

"Damn, I knew you were tall, but you're a giant" The doctor laughed, as Liam-31 moved towards the tent door.

"Where are my weapons?" Liam-31 asked the doctor.

"They should be in the armory, we've been repairing them too." The doctor said, before Liam-31 proceeded to walk out of the tent, with a little difficulty, however, as he had to move down to fit under the door.

Looking for the armory, Liam-31 continued to move along the camp, watching as the locals continued their everyday tasks, such as preparing food, standing guard, or using resources. Watching the children play with a ball, they stopped and gawked at Liam-31 as he walked by, they barely even reached the height of his knee.

Finally making his way towards the armory, which was another make shift tent, he crouched to enter the door, before being met with a bald, bearded man, refurbishing an assault rifle.

"Are you the gunsmith of the camp?" Liam-31 asked the bald man, who looked his way before creating a surprised expression.

"Yes I am, sir!" The man said with glee, placing the assault rifle to the side. "What can I help you with?"

"My weapons were being stored here. A SAAS-13, HSAR-10, and a BMP-9." Liam-31 said.

"Gotcha, they're right over here." The bald man moved to another section of the armory, where a section of weapons were stored on a wall. The man took the three weapons and placed them on the countertop.

"I've never seen any weapons such as these, what with being stuck on Earth and all. It was a hassle to repair them, but they should be just the way you got them stock." The man said, crossing his arms and smiling.

Liam-31 picked up his weapons, closely viewing each weapon he grabbed before holstering them on his armor.

"Oh, just before I forgot, you probably need to be kitted with some grenades, right? Don't worry, I got those handled." The bald man said, before handing over impact, frag, and stun grenades.

"Thank you." Liam-31 said, placing the grenades on his armor's vest. "Do you know where I can find the camp leader?" Liam-31 asked the man before leaving.

"Sure, he should be helping out the men with the materials. It was nice seeing you, Liam." The man said, as Liam-31 walked out of the tent.

Spotting a group of men handling materials used for making resources, Liam-31 walked towards their direction, before coming face to face with one of them.

"Do you know where I can find the camp leader?" Liam-31 asked the men, but before they were able to give him an answer, he felt the small sensation of a hand behind him. Turning around, he was met with the smile of the man he was looking for.

"How're you doing, Liam? Did you need something?" The man asked.

"I was coming to report that our stay at your camp will be ending today." Liam-31 replied.

"Oh, that's a shame." The man said softly. "Perhaps you could stay for the night, and leave tomorrow morning? I would like to reward you with a feast if you would allow us to, for letting us live peacefully for the past two weeks."

"I've already decided to leave today. I'm sorry." Liam-31 said. Shortly after, he felt a hand tug at his neck, quickly turning around, he saw that it was Judas-12 who placed his arm around him, smiling joyfully.

"What's up, Liam? Looks like you finally got your armor back!" Judas-12 said happily, before looking at the man. "What's wrong? Something happen?"

"Oh, it's nothing. I had just asked Liam if you two could stay one more night to allow us to prepare you a feast to send you off, but unfortunately it seems that you must go."

"Woah, woah, woah, hold on now!" Judas-12 took his arm off Liam-31's neck and shook his hands in front of his body. "We can definitely stay a little while longer!"

"No, we can't. We need to start leaving-"

"Listen, listen. I would be fine with leaving, but I'd hate myself if I left without being able to eat another plate of stew. Who knows how long it'll be before we get another meal in after we leave? I would hate it!"

Liam-31 stared at Judas-12, who had his armor off, and watched as Judas-12 gave puppy eyes, indirectly begging him to stay a little while longer.

After a conflicting amount of time, Liam-31 finally gave into Judas-12's begging.

"Fine."

"Alright! I can't wait for that stew!" Judas-12 said excitingly, thrusting his fist back.

"That's great news! But, it'll be a while until we can prepare the feast, so in the mean time you'll have to find something to occupy yourself with before we're ready."

"Oh, I know." Judas-12 said. "I was helping gather some wood before I saw you guys over here. You can help me finish up collecting it."

Nodding in agreement, Liam-31 followed Judas-12 into the woods in search of wood, disregarding the danger that still lurked despite those peaceful two weeks.
