Chapter 24:

Second Cultural Festival?

The School Life of Tanahashi

February 5th. Thursday.

There are only two weeks before the cultural festival. It was supposed to be the passed December but was moved to February. Yuuki and I are on the blackboard, "Do you guys have any suggestions for the cultural festival?"

That's right, the cultural festival is two weeks from now and we still don't have any plans for it.

One of the students suggested, "Haunted house?"

Yuuki declines, "We can't do that."

The student asked, "Why not?"

Yuuki lied, "Other classes will also be doing that as well. It will be hard for us if there's competition."

It's not because of that, I know you're scared of that stuff. You also said that last year.

Another student raised their hands, "How about a maid cafe?"

Yuuki replied, "We did that last year and I guarantee another class will do that as well."

The class went silent.

I suggested, "How about a play?"

Yuuki asked, "What kind of play, Shin?"

Shin suggested, "Snow White?"

The class started to be interested in it.

One student suggested, "How about Romeo and Juliet?"

Some of the students didn't want Romeo and Juliet. One student commented on the suggestion, "It's too generic. Let's think of something else."

Another student raised her hand, "Beauty and the Beast?"

The suggestion was a bit positive but some students didn't want it either and the whole class began to be divided about what play we should do at the cultural festival.

I stepped in and suggested, "How about I create the story?"

Yuuki asked, "Are you sure about this, Shin? We're busy with student council work as well."

I replied, "I'm fine. Just leave it to me."

Yuuki looked concerned, "Fine but don't push yourself."

I asked, "Are you ok with me doing the script and the story?"

The class has no problem with what I said and approved it.

I announced, "I'll be the director of the play. Does anyone have any idea of what kind of play you guys want? I need suggestions for this."

One student suggested, "How about tragedy?"

I wrote the suggestion on the board, "Keep going."

Another student suggested, "Comedy?"

And then another student raised their hand, "Romance?"

I kept writing their suggestion until we focus on one genre.

I circled the word tragedy as it will be the main focus of the play. I asked everyone in the class if it was fine with them, and they gladly approved of the choice.

Yuuki asked, "I know this is too early to ask but who wants to act in the play?"

Miu raised her hand, "I'll do it."

Yuuki writes her name, "Who else wants to do it?"

Some students started raising their hands as they wanted to act on the play.

I asked, "Who wants to design the costumes, as well make those?"

Nise stands up, "I'll do it! I'll do it!"

I asked, "Who else wants to help Nise with the costumes?"

A set of students started to volunteer to help with the costumes.

Yuuki followed, "Who wants to do the props?"

Sakura raised her hand, "I'll do it."

Itsuki followed and raised his hand, "Count me in too."

And some students raised their hands, as they want to help with the props.

I asked, "How about you, Yuuki?"

Yuuki replied, "I'll be the assistant director but I won't be doing anything with the story. You can handle that. Plus, there's also student council."

I went home and turned on the laptop and start doing the script for the play.

"Tragedy..."

I started typing what comes to my mind. I type and type on my laptop and someone started knocking on my door, "That's open."

Dr. Minoru opened the door, "Have you eaten anything, Tanahashi?"

I replied, "I haven't. I've been writing our script for the play."

Dr. Minoru shook his head, "It's already midnight. Go downstairs and there's some food on the table," as he closes the door.

I looked at the time and he was right, it was already midnight but I need to finish the script. I'll eat after the script is done. I kept on typing, even though my stomach is growling, "I need to finish this."

After a couple of hours, I finished the script. I looked at the time and it was already three in the morning of the next day. Instead of eating, I just fell asleep.

February 6th. Friday.

After classes, I hand the script to the actors and they looked at it. We did the auditions for the roles. After an hour, the roles have been decided. Miu will play the leading role in the play.

After the audition, I went to the student council and did some paperwork. Yuuki stands up, "Everyone, I need you guys here tomorrow even though it's a weekend. We'll be busy with the cultural festival."

Everyone in the student council room understood her announcement and continued doing paperwork.

After that, Yuuki looked at me, as she was really concerned about me, "Shin, are you sure you're not stressing yourself? Your eyes are really dark right now."

I looked at her, "I'm fine. Don't worry about me."

She asked me, as she observes me, "You look a bit pale. Are you sure that you're okay?"

I smiled at her, "As I said, don't worry about me. We should be worried about the paperwork and the cultural festival."

She leaves me alone and sits at her seat, "I see."

February 7th. Saturday.

We checked the whole school if it will be safe to have a bonfire this year. We informed the nearby neighborhood about the bonfire at the cultural festival and hoped it won't cause any disturbance throughout the whole neighborhood.

February 9th. Monday.

Nagao-san suddenly entered the classroom, "Tanahashi-Kun, Uchida-san, we need one of you in the student council. It's an urgent matter."

Yuuki stands up and leaves the classroom, "Shin, I leave everything to you here."

The props and costumes are having a hard time on their part that they haven't started yet as they kept arguing about certain things such as design and the material to be used.

I jumped in to help them and make them unite as a team. I rejected the ideas that I think are worthless and bad and accepted the good ones.

Sakura approached me, "Thanks, Shin. If you weren't there, we would be in big trouble."

I replied, "It's nothing. We need to start working. Next week will be rehearsals with everything on it."

Sakura curiously asked, "Shin, is it just me or you're a bit whiter than usual?"

I replied, "Must be your imagination."

"Ah, I see."

February 10th. Tuesday.

As we are doing rehearsals, Miu approached me while holding her script and pointed to a certain line of the script, "Shin, about this part, do I need to make it louder or is it fine the way it is?"

I looked at what she was pointing at but it was a bit blurry, "I think it's fine the way it is."

Miu looked at the script again, "I see. Thanks, Shin!" as she starts practicing again.

What is happening? Do I need glasses?

February 11th. Wednesday.

I left the whole class, as they kept doing their part, while I do my part at the student council. The work just kept on piling.

While looking through some of the documents, my vision started to get blurry.

My head... hurts suddenly.

I stand up and opened the door as Uchiyama-san noticed me, "I'll just go to the bathroom, Uchiyama-san," and closed the door as I left the room and went to the bathroom but ended up in the nurse's office.

I lay down for a bit and returned to the student council room.

February 12th. Thursday.

The rehearsal was hectic.

I shouted, "Cut! Your voice is a bit livelier Make it a bit sad."

One of the cast asked, "Tanahashi-Kun, can you act this bit? I'm a little bit confused."

I acted on the bit that he was asking for.

Nise, who's working on the costumes, entered the classroom where we are practicing, "Shin, we have bad news. Come over to the classroom."

I rushed into the classroom and it seems like everything has already been resolved, as Yuuki was there already lending them a hand.

Nise apologizes, "I'm sorry, Shin!"

I replied, "Don't worry about it."

Whatever the problem is, it's already fixed.

However...

I'm getting a bit dizzy.

Nise looks at me, "Are you fine, Shin?"

I replied, "I'm fine. You guys go back to work. I'll go back and check the rehearsals."

I left the classroom and return to the room where we are rehearsing.

February 13th. Friday.

Nise announced to the class with excitement, "The costumes are done!"

Itsuki and Sakura followed suit with smiles on their faces, "The props as well!"

I replied, "Good work, everyone! We can fully practice next week!"

Everyone celebrated, as a big burden has been lifted on their shoulders.

I went to the room where actors are rehearsing, "Everyone, try on the costumes that they made."

They left the room and went back to the classroom to try the costumes.

Miu saw her costume and tries it, "This is amazing! Thanks, everyone!"

Yuuki came up to me, "Good work there, Shin."

I replied, "I wouldn't have done it without everyone's help."

Yuuki asked, "Can we go outside of the room for a bit?"

I nodded at her and went outside of the room.

I asked, "What's the matter, Yuuki?"

She asked, "Are you free tomorrow, Shin?"

I replied, "Yeah but what are we doing tomorrow?"

She blushes and whispered, "A...date."

A date? Tomorrow?

...

It's Valentine's Day tomorrow!

She asked one more time, "Are you okay with it?"

I blushed, "Yeah...I guess so."

She smiled brightly, "Thanks, Shin. I'll look forward to tomorrow!" as she returns to the classroom.

I liked that smile.

But...

Instead of feeling happy, I feel weak for some reason...
