Chapter 9:

Call to action

As the dust settles

Sky and Fawke were the only ones sitting at the dining table that morning. As they sat at opposite ends of the table enjoying their meals. Well, one of them certainly was. Sky still didn't really know how to interact with Fawke after the whole incident with Crystal. But that didn't stop Fawke from continuing to be in a cheery mood and wanting to attempt to make conversation with her.

"So is there a reason that you're avoiding me?" As Fawke took a big mouthful of her food.

"To be frank, you creep me out. I saw how you looked at Crystal as she was being hurt. There was nothing normal about that."

"I have to seek enjoyment somehow. Plus, in a world like this, you grow used to seeing terrible things. If you don't take light in the situation then you are surely to go mad." Fawke chuckled lightly.

The room fell back into silence again. Sky was feeling just as uneasy, if not more, than when she had first entered the room. The only noise emanating from within the room were the clanking of cutlery and the crackling of the fireplace. That was until Fawke piped up again.

"There is something important that I wish to ask of you, if that is ok with you?"

"Go ahead." Sky retorted, not wanting to be rude. She had a feeling Fawke was going to ask one way or another.

"Now, can you tell me about the night that you came in possession of the axe?"

Before she even realized Sky was suddenly telling Fawke everything that happened that night. About meeting up with Isaac and how Meredith killed him. Then how she became enraged and killed both Meredith and Abby. The moment she finished, she clasped her hand around her mouth. Why did she say all of that? Sky did not want Fawke to know anything about that night and yet, she still told her.

"I apologize for having to trick you into answering that. I knew just simply asking you wouldn't get us anywhere and, even if I got a little enjoyment out of it, taking you back down to the basement and dealing with you there would take too much time. But that's why I like having Orion around, it's quite handing having a mage around."

"Was there any particular reason you wanted to know about that night?" Sky asked through gritted teeth.

"There was actually! At first it mostly out of curiosity. But something was eating away at me for some time. With the disappearance of Night Cross and I only recently found out from Abby's faction that she has been missing for some time. The only common factor, they all had been in contact with you." Fawke pointed at Sky as she said that.

"That's a fair assumption, but I swear I had nothing to do with Night Cross!" Sky pleaded.

"I believe you on that as we, or should I say Orion, had eye's on you for the majority of the time from the moment you picked up the axe. Although I am disappointed to hear of Abby and Meredith's deaths, it worries me about the other incident. After what you just told me, it certainly does change things."

"What do you mean by that?" Sky asked, being a little worried herself.

"I have a bad feeling about this Isaac person you were talking about. If I'm not mistaken he is what many say is the Prince of the Elites. There are many rumors that he is the secret child of Queen Rina and King Osson. But it's almost impossible to know as it has been said that this supposed Prince is a changeling. But there had been reports recently that his new appearance was exactly as you just described."

Sky's heart sunk as she heard the news. The one person that she had a true connection with may not have been true to her, as she had so blissfully hoped. Just like everyone else in her life. The more she thought about it, the more it was possible that he knew what was transpiring and was just using her to foil the rebellions plans. This could've been his intentions from the very first moment they met. Sky felt so stupid for being that gullible. How could she be tricked by someone so easily? As Sky sat there in disbelief and disappointment Fawke continued her ramblings.

"So if rumors are true, and this man was indeed the Prince, then that screws up our plan a little. Especially now that he's dead. It also means that the Rina and Osson are now, possibly, aware of us having a weapon that can kill them. It may also mean that they are aware of you, in which case, it will make it incredibly hard to play out our plan."

"So what are we going to do?" Sky asked, still feeling disheartened.

"For now, I need you to continue doing your training with Orion. Me, on the other hand. I'm going to need to do much more thinking. For that I'll need some alone time. So if you could please leave the room, that would be great." Fawke placed her wings on the table while they held up her head. She was now in deep thought. Sky used this as an excuse to get away from her.

The days went by and Sky didn't see much of Fawke. She didn't know whether she should be happy about that or not. Although she didn't really notice nor care. After the information she had learnt, it really hurt her. The pointless murders of Meredith and Abby, all this time thinking that she had attachment issues to the axe because of Isaac. It all seemed like it had been a big waste of time.

At this point Sky was barely functioning day to day. Everything blurred together while Sky just went about, business as usual, in a miserable daze. Thankfully Orion, being the only nice one in this place, noticed how she was coping after the news and tried to go easy on her. But, with the way she was, it was only slowing things down. It was obvious to Orion that Fawke was getting irritated by this fact. She, on the other hand, really never did have much empathy within her.

With his extensive knowledge Orion set out to create something to help ease Sky's mind. There had many times where he was needed to clear the sanity of Fawke's prisoners, but he wasn't in need of something as strong. A few hours later, and many annoying interruption from other staff, and his brew was finally done.

"Here, have this. Hopefully it'll make you feel a little better ." Orion sat Sky in his tower as he passed her the potion. Once she had taken it from him Orion patted her on the shoulder. His kind, purple eyes made her feel a little calmer.

As she stared off into the distance she raised the mug to her mouth, as if on autopilot. Without taking a break to breath she rank the entire potion in one go. She lowered the mug once more, continuing to stare at the wall with a blank stare. It took several minutes before the potion started showing its effects.

"Thank you for that. I certainly am feeling better. Although you don't happen to have anything that could suppress memories?" Sky sounded groggy, as if she just woken from a nap.

"I might do but I think it's for the best that you don't take something like that. Brews like that are never stable nor do they do their job too well."

"I'll take your word for it. So what do we do now? I assume we're not going to be doing this forever."

"You are right and I do have some good news. We've almost completed our part of the plan. But Fawke has something else in mind. At the end of the week she plans on having a big meeting."

With that said, a few days later and Fawke indeed held a meeting. But they weren't the only ones there. Many leaders from different factions were now sitting around in the dining room. Various plates of food were laid out on the table. Many of the seated were chatting away merrily, several of them with a drink in hand. Fawke was the first to notice Sky's arrival.

"Sky! Glad to see you finally made your appearance. Please take a seat and we'll get this meeting started shortly!" Fawke seemed to be in an awfully cheery mood.

Sky took her seat, which was subsequently next to Fawke. The harpie was busy talking to the other person beside her, a faun no less, while continuing to take sips of her drink. Once her conversation concluded she stood up and began clanging a knife on her, now empty, glass.

"May I have everyone's attention please!" Fawke shouted over the noise of several conversations happening at once. But her voice was not loud enough to get everyone's attention.

"EVERYONE QUITE DOWN!" A booming voice came from a minotaur a few seats down. That got everyone to quieten down.

"Thank you! Now that everyone is present, I'll get this meeting started. As a few of you know we now have all the pieces to go ahead with Jay's plan. Unfortunately she cannot be here to do this herself, but I'll be taking over for now. Now, I would like to get into how we're going to take down the Elite's. This is what's going to happen;

Firstly; I, along with any creatures with the ability to fly, will take to the sky. We'll be keeping an eye out for any aerial attacks along with any attempts at a sneak attack on the ground.

Secondly; There'll be a small group that is going to go underground and cut the power. That way they'll be pretty much blind. Although a few of us creatures are equip to see in the dark, there a several among us that are not. So Orion, along with a few other mages, are going to take care of that, so at least we'll have an advantage.

That will be everyone's signal to move in. There'll be different groups . If any group gets ambushed or compromised then each creature is equipped with a make shift flare gun. Keep an eye out for if these are shot as if any other team is available you'll be sent to that area next. Those of us in the air will also give those teams a heads up as well if needed.

Last, and more importantly, Sky; you're going to be tasked with sneaking your way into the Elite's base. Then, with the axe, you are to kill the King and Queen! If you have to you may kill anyone else that stands in your way! But don't you worry your pretty little head! Crystal's faction has made a deal with us and several of their people are going to accompany you, making sure you get there unharmed."

Fawke, now done, clapped her hands and dismissed everyone. All the leaders immediately departed, leaving only Sky alone in the dining hall. Now that everyone had been given their instructions they had all set out to prepare. They were now going to war.r.
