Chapter 10:

As the dust settles

As the dust settles

The sight before her made Sky not want to go any further. The remains of Jay and the others of Night Cross were hung up in a crude display. Some nailed up on boards, others were left hanging by their necks. How many more had to suffer because of her mistakes. What would of all of their fates been if she had never existed or come into their lives?

"My, my , my. What a sight to behold. At least I won't need to send any search parties out for them anymore. But alas, we must march on. Come everyone, we can't turn back now!" Fawkes had landed to see why everyone had come to a halt, but to also behold the sight before. Soon after giving those orders though she taken off once more to the skies.

It wasn't much further than this that they came up to the very place that may be the final resting place for some. Depending on how well the plan played out. Everyone knew, and was prepared, for some lives to be lost. That's the risk that come with war. But that didn't stop them from feeling such helplessness and despair.

It was now night and everyone was in position. It was very unnerving knowing that, at any moment, their plan could be unfolded. Then everything up to this point had been for naught. Looking at the city that the Elite's called home was a magnificent sight. With it being so dark out, it was very easy to see all the lights on in each of their homes. It was almost like looking at the stars.

That was until they all started flickering off, one by one. That was their signal. So in the silence of the night, the rebels moved forth. Each of the fleets moved into their specific zones. It wasn't long before the first of the fighting started. It was the yelling and screams of death that first alerted the guards. Followed was more yelling, now coming from the opposing side. Then came the sounds of sirens, their alarms to call for their troops.

Sky and her protectors stood outside, still waiting for their signal. They were waiting by the front gate, which would open at any moment. Hopefully, if everything had gone well, the front would be clear of most guards and one of the rebels would be the one opening it. Sky did not like standing around her for too long. The moat surrounding the area was said to be infested by sirens. But they didn't have to wait for long as, a few moments later, the gate came crashing down as the rebel signaled for them to come through.

They quickly made their way through the courtyard, making sure to keep to the shadows and avoid any conflict. Going through the main door would've proved to be too difficult so, as planned, they entered through a side door. One that only the servants used. From there they made their way through to many of the many main hallways.

But something felt off. This all felt too easy. But it was too late to turn back now. Whatever was to be thrown at them, they'd just have to learn to adapt to it. Unfortunately it didn't matter how much preparation they had in advance ,nothing was ever going to prepare them for what was about to happen.

As they were gaining closer to the royalties headquarters a deep growling could be heard from somewhere far off in the direction they were heading. Next thing a large doglike creature came barreling down the hallway at them. It was so fast they almost didn't have time to jump out of the way. But they weren't fast enough for its next attack as he slaughtered every single one of people surrounding Sky.

As it changed back into its human form. This was somebody that Sky had met once before. It was Axis. Had he truly turned against them? Was this after he got betrayed or had he been on their side all along? But she was more surprised that he had left her alive. Although, with how he was looking at her, he really wished he could.

A familiar feeling came back to Sky as her mind began fogging up once again. Could Orion sense that she was in danger? But instead of taking her back the way she came, or allowing her to fight Axis, this force drew her in a different direction to the room where the King and Queen should've been. As she walked pass the werewolf and down the rest of the corridor Sky began feeling more fearful. Even though she passed many enemy soldiers none of them touched her, several of them even moved out of the way. Probably because Axis was following close behind her.

Sky came to a halt at a door not far from the one they had previously been at. This door on the other hand looked much grander. It was a double door with golden patterns painted all around it. Sky didn't have much of a chance to admire them as they soon were opened. Within was a large main hall.

This room looked like it could hold hundreds of people. On each of the walls hung various banners, all of which had different coat of arms on them. At the back of the room sat two thrones, both of which were fit for a King and Queen. But, more importantly, standing in the middle of the room were to people. Sky could only assume that these two were Rina and Osson.

"It's nice to finally meet you face to face. You certainly have caused us quite some trouble!" Rina was the first one to speak of the two. Her voice sounded beautiful, yet haunting.

Any defining features of her were hidden behind a black robe. All Sky could make out was her long black hair protruding from the hood of said robe. Osson on the other hand. He looked like one of the many kings she had read about in her books. He had grey, curly hair which looked like it was in dire need of a haircut. The wrinkles on his face were very revealing on how old he had become. He wore all black clothes over his thinning body as a red cape draped over him. Although he did lack one defining feature, a mouth.

"Why do you want me here?" Sky blurted out. The control on Sky had dimmed, allowing her to speak for a little while.

"Well, we certainly can't have people taking things that don't belong to them. After all, you have seen what happens when a little bit of power gets to these rebels head. We also had a way of knowing that those of you belonged to us. The numbers engraved on each one of you were to symbolize the birth of our son. 21034983 or it could be written as 21/03/4983."

Sky touched her chest where her name was once engraved. She had never given it much thought until just now. But it did make sense. It's not like very many would understand the meaning of the numbers.

"We knew it would only be a matter of time before you showed up on our doorstep. We originally had a fairy, Abby I believe her name was, to collect you from that building you first started up in. But before Abby could take you for herself Meredith interrupted her. So our plan had to change. Eventually it all fell in to place once more, and these rebels were going to bring you to us. But now that you are here, we can do as we please with you. After what you did to our son, this will be very enjoyable."

"But I wasn't the one to kill him!" Sky yelled, tears streaming down her face. The Queens words cut right through her. There was still a part of Sky that cared deeply for Isaac. She would've been hurt by the news of Abby's betrayal, but she was so used to it at this point.

"No matter! You say you didn't and yet, you are here. Holding the same axe that ended his life, now intending to take ours too. And we're going to make sure you suffer just like he did." But she wasn't talking about her son as her bony hand pointed behind her, towards the thrones.

As she took a closer look, Sky noticed an object between the two thrones that she hadn't seen prior to entering. It was a head stuck on a spike. This head belonged to someone she once knew. Zetta had been captured and he was now crudely displayed for all to see. Before she could process what she was seeing before her another person entered the room.

Maybe Rina was right. Sky did deserve to suffer. Everyone was in pain or dying, because of her. All this suffering, the war, everything. Everything always came back to her. Her thoughts were interrupted once more by the sound of footsteps, as someone stepped out of the shadows. If it wasn't for his blue robes, his stunning purple eyes surely gave away who he was. In a world like this, nobody could be trusted.

"If it wasn't for Orion here, we would've had you sooner." Rina sounded cold as she said that. "He was supposed to "loose" control of you, while leaving you at that tavern. Under the excuse that your body was weakening and needed to freshen up. Someone there was supposed to take you while you were passed out. But they appeared to enjoy the beer there a little too much. Along with that we also weren't anticipating you to be taken by the people of Caladria. So we were unable to use our excuse anymore. Once Orion let us know there had been a change in their little war all we had to do was sit and wait!" Orion gave a meek smile as he shrugged his shoulders. But all attention continued to stay on Sky.

"Now enough with all this chatter!" Rina continued. "We have some business to take care of!"

Orion forced Sky to kneel before Rina, before making her drop the axe. As she did Osson snatched the axe from the ground. and jerked his wrist. Orinon stepped forward as he raised his arm, pointing at Sky. A moment went by before he jerked his wrist. As he did Sky's body contorted, breaking many of her bones in the process. An all too similar smile appeared under Rina's robe, one that Sky had once seen on Fawke.

Orinon, Rina, Osson and Axis all stood around Sky who was being brutally tortured. All of them not saying anything as their eyes were fixed on her already mutilated body, just watching. In one final cry and gasp Sky's body hit the floor, almost mutilated beyond recognition. Sky's body no longer moved, as she lay in her final resting place.

It was only a matter of time before it all came to an end as the building began to crumble and shake. Then, within the final moments, the dust settled.
