Chapter 10:

The World That Ended in Light

A Wish Left Behind in this Forsaken World

A girl with long black hair and wearing a black gothic dress was watching from afar a certain boy named Ayumu. For years and years she did this, trying to find a way to get closer to him, but the world wouldn't allow the two to meet, with the biggest obstacle being the guardian.

“A being that protect this world? I should have imagined something like this.”

Ayumu walked to the school while the girl continued to watch him from a completely strange place.

The boy was overcome with sadness at his inability to change himself to have a better school life. And seeing that, the girl wanted to approach him even more.

"I have to learn more about the guardian, but I believe it will be necessary to destroy it."

Ayumu stopped in front of the school gate, wondering if he should just give up and go home.

“And to do that, I will need you.”

She still had her eyes fixed on the boy.

“I will create a good enemy for you to fight.”

“I see this thing has finally given up on maintaining any resemblance to a human being.”

Ayumu was facing that being that wouldn’t stop roaring.

“Be careful, I have a terrible feeling. It's its last life, so I imagine its power…"

“Must be at a truly ridiculous level.”

I need another miracle! An even stronger light!

The demon attacked, its speed was such that Ayumu couldn't even react. In the blink of an eye, blood sprayed in all directions. The end came quickly and coldly.

Akemi expected the opponent to be stronger, but that was way beyond what she had imagined. She was gaping at that, the claw that had ripped through her friend's chest.

Ayumu couldn't even scream and there was no chance of healing. His heart and lungs destroyed in a single blow. The cold embrace of death enveloped him in that simple, fatal blow.

As his consciousness quickly faded away, the demon moved its claw to the side, pulling it out of Ayumu's body and at the same time nearly splitting him in half. And then, Ayumu fell to the ground, dead.

"No... No... No... No!!!"

Crying, Akemi fell to her knees beside Ayumu.

“In the end… was it… really impossible? Is it impossible for him to escape from here?”

The world was shaking. Losing the reason for its existence, it started to disappear.

“I can’t accept this! I refuse to accept this!”

Akemi looked at the guardian who was still standing there. Despite its now monstrous face, it was also crying.

"Why are you crying?! It was you who did this! Shouldn't you protect him?! Shouldn't you be protecting that wish?! His desire to find happiness?! Is this world more important than Ayumu?!”

The guardian didn't answer, it just stood there in silence as the world around them began to dissolve.

"Give him back to me! Give Ayumu back to me! All the moments we spent together! The happiness he found! Give it all back!”

She started to cry even harder.

“Ayumu… Don't leave me… Don't forget me… Weren't you going to save that girl? Won't you find out the truth?”

A place where everything exists and at the same time there’s nothing. The same ephemeral place Ayumu has seen dozens, no, hundreds of times. And even though he had visited that place so many times, he could never remember it.

There, a girl was waiting for him. A girl who wanted to give a wish to him.

He started walking towards her.

“Ayumu!”

He stopped. It was like someone was calling him, a voice filled with sadness. And that made his heart ache.

“Who is calling me?”

For some reason, his mind couldn't tell who that person was, but his heart was screaming, longing to find the owner of that voice.

“It hurts...”

His right hand was grasping his chest.

After a few moments standing still, he took a deep breath and walked towards the girl.

It was a strange situation. Even in front of that person, he couldn't describe her.

The girl clasped her hands together like she was about to pray.

“I hope you’ll find happiness this time.”

With a smile on her face, she made that sincere wish. She didn't want anything else, that immaculate wish was all she carried with her.

Ayumu realized that, he felt the honesty of those words, which made him extremely happy.

Now he just had to accept that wish and start over again.

This time, he would surely achieve happiness.

He failed countless times, but he would try one more time.

Surely he could succeed next time.

His hands would finally grasp happiness. And for that, he started to stretch his right arm towards the girl. That girl who kept smiling in joy.

But his arm stopped midway and recoiled, leaving the girl surprised.

Something was wrong. The pain in his heart didn't stop.

He was forgetting something extremely important.

The voice he heard still echoed in his mind that continued trying to identify its owner.

Why couldn't he remember anything?

But his heart wouldn't give up, his head felt like it was going to explode from trying so hard to break that barrier and his chest hurt more and more.

It was unbearable. He could make it all go away if he just embraced that wish and started all over again. But he didn't want to do that.

And then, he understood.

Ayumu didn't need to keep looking for happiness, because he had already found it.

After dozens of years of trying, he changed. He managed to make friends, he managed to have a good school life.

Memories of those times finally surfaced in his mind.

How could he forget those countless moments of joy? How could he forget about Ryou and Takashi, his best friends? How could he forget the days training at the school clubs? How could he forget about the summer festivals he visited with his friends?

But he forgot many times about everything. Always going back to square one.

However, there was something much worse. He forgot about her.

That girl who gave him something even greater than happiness.

So that's why my heart hurts so much.

Upon understanding that, a small smile appeared on his face.

Love. He was completely in love with Akemi.

That girl who suddenly came into his life and became such an important part of it. Even though he still didn't know anything about her, Ayumu wanted to stay by her side. And little by little they would learn more about each other.

Now I know why she cried that day.

He forgot about everything, throwing away all that time they spent together. But she still remembered and this hurt her deeply.

Ayumu faced the girl before him once more.

“I hope you’ll find happiness this time.”

She repeated that wish, again with a smile on her face, but Ayumu shook his head.

"Why...?"

For the first time, that girl said something different, but this time her voice was shaky.

"Because I don't need those words anymore."

"You don’t need?"

"Yes. I don’t need them."

Ayumu started to smile and that girl was delighted, it was as if she had seen the most beautiful thing ever.

“I really appreciate you wishing for my happiness. I'm really happy for that, so from the bottom of my heart, I thank you again. But…"

He paused for a moment.

“I already got all the happiness I wanted. Now what I need to do is keep this happiness I've acquired. And for that, I have to return to a certain person. If I don't, she’ll be extremely sad and that will make me sad too."

The girl looked deeply into his eyes.

“Are you happy, Ayumu?”

"Yes. That’s why I need to fight, so that me and that person… So me and Akemi can be together.”

The girl smiled and at that moment a scene from Ayumu's past flashed in his mind. A scene where a girl was smiling.

Who was she…?

“I understand, Ayumu. So put the guardian to rest, please. She may not look like this right now, but she was so beautiful.”

"You can count with me. So, see you later.”

"Right, see you later."

Akemi was still crying beside Ayumu and in front of them the guardian was still watching in silence with tears in its eyes.

"Ayumu... Ayumu…"

The world continued to shake and the farther landscapes were disappearing. Very soon everything would go back to the beginning.

"I couldn't do anything... When I tried to tell the secret so you could choose what was best for you, I only ended up causing you trouble…"

The guardian attacked, trying to keep everything the way it was.

"And seeing that I was completely powerless here, I tried to fulfill this world's wish... His wish... But it all ended in tragedy…"

The other girl intervened and destroyed all the happiness in that world.

"And now... Once again... You died... And I couldn't do anything…"

She wouldn't stop crying.

“I'm useless… Maybe it was a mistake that I came to you… Forgive me. If I hadn't shown up…”

"If you keep saying that, you’ll make me angry."

Akemi's eyes widened in surprise.

“Ayu… mu?”

She wasn’t getting crazy, his mouth had moved.

“Ayumu?!”

A light enveloped Ayumu's body and soon after he got up. When the light finally dissipated, he was completely healed and with his sword in hand.

“Akemi, you made me the happiest person in the world. So I'll be angry if you say you shouldn't have approached me!"

“Ayumu...”

“Akemi, I love you! I want to be with you! And for that, I will put an end to everything!”

He pointed the sword at the guardian and a pure white light enveloped both the sword and Ayumu.

The tears stopped, Akemi stared at him with her face completely red.

Meanwhile, the guardian seeing that its target was still alive lost control again and began to roar. It needed to save that world and for that, it would kill even the one it swore to protect.

This time Ayumu who took the initiative and attacked. The guardian prepared to block with its claw, but at the last second it gave up on that idea and jumped back. That light was too dangerous.

"I'm sorry, but I'm not going to play with you."

Ayumu attacked again, forcing the guardian to keep dodging. The monster that had managed to kill that boy with just one attack was now cornered.

The sword kept coming faster and faster. And with no way out, the guardian tried to attack.

“Disappear!”

The sword flashed brighter than ever and collided with the claw, shattering it to pieces. The guardian screamed and before it could try to swipe with the other claw, the light engulfed him.

“You are no longer needed, guardian. You can rest now.”

Within the light the guardian screamed, and its body disintegrated until there was nothing left.

When the light disappeared, a simply divine being appeared where that monster had been until now. The angel had beautiful white wings, very long golden hair and was like a beautiful young woman.

"Thank you so much for this."

She said smiling and disappeared.

“So that was her true form? She was pretty like that girl said.”

“Ayumu!”

“Oh, Akemi—”

She hugged him. Ayumu acted awkward for a moment and when he went to hug her too, she released him and gently pushed him away while shooking her head.

"No, I can't do this until you know everything."

As she said that, the world began to shake even more strongly and everything around them began to gradually disintegrate.

"Why is this happening? I won, so I should have saved this world, right? And the other girl back home? We have to get her!”

“Calm down, Ayumu. Everything is fine."

"Everything is fine? How so?"

"That girl is safe and you’ll meet her soon."

Everything was disappearing, being engulfed in white light.

“Ayumu, this is the result you wanted. Now leave me behind and go to the light.”

“Leave you behind?! I can’t do this! You come with me!"

“Ayumu!”

She screamed and he stopped.

“Trust me just one more time, okay?”

"Okay. I believe in you."

“Then leave me here and head to the light without looking back. There you’ll meet a certain person and you’ll learn the truth.”

"The truth? Wasn't that girl who was going to reveal it to me?"

“Now that we've reached this point, it's no longer necessary for her or I to say anything. It’ll be better if you talk with the person responsible for all this.”

Ayumu stood there trying to understand everything Akemi was saying. And then, she gave him a little push.

"Go. And like I said, don't look back. Don't worry this isn't goodbye, I will be on the other side waiting for you.”

"Alright. See you later, Akemi. It's a promise."

"Sure, it's a promise."

Ayumu left Akemi behind and continued walking towards the light that consumed that world. Without him knowing, Akemi was waving at him with a smile on her face.

He continued walking with very determined steps.

“Even if the path you are about to take leads you to an unthinkable despair?”

That phrase echoed in his mind once again. He was about to find out the truth and after that would come infinite darkness. Ayumu didn't know what awaited him, but if Akemi would be with him, he felt he could overcome anything.

And then, finally everything was swallowed up by the light and that world came to an end. After countless years, that wish was fulfilled.
