Chapter 0:

Never dying war

Who Needs Enemies?

Under the dragon's roars and enthusiastic cheers, not a single soul heard his final screams.

I did.

"Hero…?" The village chief groans, surprised under his last dying breath, lacking any of the strength he had once. Impaled against a wall by a blade so tall it was bigger than him, and so large his body almost wouldn't stay together.

We stand right behind a tower, away from the houses and his villagers.

"I told you, not a single person can know about the dragon… Especially from the council."

The sword slides off, making his body, the wall and the building collapse.

The rubble falls on top of me but I stand as if it were pebbles, instantly putting a smile on my face as the entire village claps and whistles at my sight.

"Hero! Hero! Hero!” The lovely folks shout. “We are saved!” “He’s here!” “Kiss my baby!” “Go big guy!”

Even if squashed under rocks or sitting on top of burning roofs, the citizens keep smiling and cheering with every move of mine. Longing for me to kill a dragon in front of their eyes.

Not the reason I'm here.

Legends say the blood of that creature is the key to immortality, the one and only thing mortals desire.

They’ve had their chance, the undead have been a thing for millennia, and for all their existence, they’ve been looked down upon.

Although the idea of true immortality repulses me, this creature emerges only once every century.

Someone will have it in their hands.

And if someone is going to discover eternal life… It has to be a necromancer.

I point at the Stone Dragon slithering through house after house in a rampage. My torn cape floats against the wind.

“Go forth my dear undead! Live glory after death once more!” I shout.

I pierce the ground with my sword, twisting it as the cracks below my feet start to glow.

Every single corpse on the territory starts to rise from the dirt.

Amongst the swarm, the recently split in half chief slowly gets up from the destruction, tumbling and tripping as the dead man makes his way to the dragon. No one notices their own leader slithering right besides them. They’re way too busy trying to not miss a single second everything else.

All going exactly as planned. Nothing would ever make me take my eyes out of the creature.

The people cheer, the zombies march towards the dragon to wrap around his legs, until a loud shot makes everyone in the village go silent.

One of the zombies falls down right next to me, with a missing head and a dissolving neck. Everyone stays in silent union for a couple of attentive seconds, and then they all start screaming twice as loud.

“Hiro! Hiro! Hiro!” The idiots cheer all together.

In fear, I turn around.

Her cold eyes where fixedly staring at me, fixing her thin glasses.

I reach them fuming, blocking her way with the sword so she wouldn’t walk another step, smiling, like I'm happy to see her.

“Nobody called! Sorry, you were too late, my troops already got here first. Don’t you see they already feel safe and saved?” I looked around at the applauding remains of people.

Everyone is looking at us like they know exactly what is about to take place. I don’t blame their excitement, I’m just as thrilled.

“Kill her!” “Explode his head!” “Murder! Murder!” The crowd screams, taking distance.

She looks back at my grin, not surprised, but disappointed.

“And what makes you think that? We are not children, ‘firsts’ mean shit. I was just pacing around when I saw your recklessness. I’ve got it all under control, and we’ll capture it sooner than you can raise one more useless puppet.“

She loads a flare, shooting it up into the sky. We're surrounded by her troops. 5 men following the signal of their general straight into my zombies.

I tighten my gaze on her with a rather offended smile.

“The creature deserves a better destiny than to be captured by you and turned into a weapon… I’ll be fairer with it… I’ll kill it.”

“No creature deserves to rot and become an empty shell of its former self, a slave to your will. I’m here to save these people, contain the dragon… And save it from you.”

“Hah.” I burst into laughter. “You know what? You’re right. Firsts don’t mean shit, great idea, let’s cooperate!“ My smirk grows as I take a step. “Do everyone a favor then…”

Her disgusted look fills me with joy as I stand in between her and the mess.

Everyone’s injured, I’m only good when they’re already dead…You’re a bloody doctor. So, either call me when it’s too late for them, or, be useful while the knight here takes on the dragon, huh? A great idea!!” I say as I roll my eyes, still smiling.

Walking to the creature, I hear a whistle, 4 of her soldiers run back to the village.

I then hear her laughter, so sweet it makes me sick.

“For once, you’ve used your brain.” She giggles. “Leave the living for me to heal and not for you to throw away... But you, killing a dragon?” The smirk grows wider. “…Kinda funny, good humor.“

She walks past me. I take a deep breath, and again, I force a smile.

“You don’t care but... I’ve killed …dragons before.” A couple. “But since you’re suddenly not a military who experiments on dragons… I’ll take him and let him live and treat him well and tell him you loved him. All good, right? Now excuse me.”

I walk faster, but she tightens her steps too. No matter how close I get to running, she’s still not leaving my side or taking her eyes out of the prize.

“Touch it and it’s war.“ She shouts.

“Good." I smile. "I couldn’t stand being nice to you anymore anyways.“
