Chapter 3:

A Murderer in Naree, Lookout For a Killer

Let the Hunt Begin

Driving through the desert riding in the car from the nice man who they met in Mamiee giving them a ride to Naree. De-Ron is sleeping in the trunk while Sloane looks at the view of the endless sand.

“Hey, we’re almost there, you can see the city from here.” Man 1

Sloane looks out in front of them and sees it in the distance. She knocks on the truck to wake up De-Ron.

“De-Ron! De-Ron, wake up.” Sloane

Slowly opening his eyes he yawns then stands up in the back looking over the roof.

“Wow! It really is big.” Sloane

“It’s grown the last time I saw it.” De-Ron

“Have you been there before?” Sloane

“Once, it was smaller the last time I visited.” De-Ron

“Guess, you’ll get to see how big it’s gotten.” Sloane

“Yeah.” De-Ron

He drops them off as close to Naree as he can. De-Ron jumps out of the trunk then grabs their bags. Sloane closes the car door.

“Thanks again for the ride.” Sloane

“No problem, you guys help Mamiee its the least I can do.” Man 1

“Still thank you.” Sloane

“Thanks a lot.” De-Ron

They wave goodbye to the man as he drives away.

“Let’s head in.” De-Ron

“Okay.” Sloane

They grab their stuff and head inside, making their way through the streets where they see all kinds of shops, mostly clothes and food.

“Doesn’t look like it’s changed that much.” De-Ron

“Really? I’ve seen a city this big before.” Sloane

“Do you want to have a look around?” De-Ron

“Can we?” Sloane

“Let’s find a hotel first. We have some money left over from our last job, why not do some shopping.” De-Ron

“Yes!” Sloane

Dropping up their stuff they decide to go sightseeing checking out the tallest building with the best view of the whole city. Next they stop at a clothes store picking out some extra clothes and shoes. Lastly, going to a restaurant ordering some food.

“I’ll do the steak with mashed potatoes and broccoli.” De-Ron

“I will have a hamburger with fries and coleslaw.” Sloane

“Right away.” Waitress 1

Their waitress gives them their food, finishing up they pay, leaving they head down the street feeling so full.

“Man, that was good.” De-Ron

“It definitely was.” Sloane

“Where should we go next?” De-Ron

“Let’s see…”Sloane

She sees a few officers head trying to control a crowd of people.

“Wonder what’s going on?” De-Ron

“Let’s check it out.” Sloane

They head over to the crowd there all blocking an alleyway, but the police are blocking most of the view.

“I can’t see a thing, can you?” Sloane

“Nope, they have it pretty covered up.” De-Ron

“Hmm…ah! Excuse me.” Sloane

“Yes?”

“What’s going on? Did something happen?” Sloane

“Yes, two people were murdered.”

“Murdered?” De-Ron

“They have been happening a lot lately.”

“This time it sounds like it was a man and a little girl.”

“Huh?” Sloane

She goes pale and starts to sweat.

“Sloane?” De-Ron

An inspector storms up to the crowd.

“All of you! Leave the area at once!” Inspector

“Or I’ll arrest you all!” Inspector

The crowd quietly leaves. De-Ron starts to leave too, but Sloane doesn’t move.

“Sloane? What’s wrong?” De-Ron

Sloane walks into the alley.

“Hey! Sloane!” De-Ron

He follows her, some of the officers try to stop her.

“Hey, you can’t be in here!” Officer 1

“Get back, right now!” Officer 2

“Please tell me what happened. Tell me about the murder.” Sloane

“We can’t say anything about it! Please leave immediately!” Officer 1

“Tsk! People can’t respect a crime scene.” Inspector

“They’re scared, they want to know what’s going on.”

“They should stay out of it.” Inspector

Hearing the commotion the inspector and the lead officer look over to see what’s happening.

“What is it now?!” Inspector

“Who the fuck is that?!” Inspector

“Maybe a reporter?” Lead officer

“Like I care! I ordered no one else in here!” Inspector

He heads towards Sloane and the officers.

“Hey! Leave right now or I’ll have you arrested!” Inspector

“Sorry, we’ll leave. Come on Sloane.” De-Ron

“Please tell me about…” Sloane

“Were you listening?! I’ll arrest you myself if you don’t go now!” Inspector

Sloane pulls out her hunter’s coin, a hunter has the same authority as a police officer. It helps gather information or locate a target in the area or in a different town or city.

“A hunter’s coin!” Lead officer.

“What’s a hunter doing here? We didn’t call for one.” Inspector

“Please tell me about these recent murders.” Sloane

Displeased about it he tells her about the murders.

“I’m Inspector Felix, lead investigator of this case.” Felix

“Lead officer Jona, nice to meet you.” Jona

“My name is Sloane.” Sloane

“And you are?” Jona

“De-Ron, I want no part of this.” De-Ron

“Okay…” Jona

“Anyway, the murder happened last night around 11. He was late picking up his daughter from school.” Felix

“They were attacked on their way home. The people who lived nearby heard the screams of a little girl. Besides there was no witness who saw the killer or saw it happen.” Jona

“Are there any leads or suspects?” Sloane

“None, happening only at night it would be hard for anyone to describe someone.” Felix

“The attacks appear to be random.” Jona

“Random?” De-Ron

“What of the other murders?” Sloane

“So far it’s be an old couple murdered in their home, a young married coupl who were out on a date, and three kids a girl and two boys playing in the park.” Felix

Sloane tightens her fist.

“What about the killer? Any details?” Sloane

“Well, there is one.” Jona

“A woman who lived by the old couple, the first victims, said she saw a tall man leaving their house.” Jona

“We looked into it, but we couldn’t find anyone near the area and there wasn’t much detail to work with.” Felix

“I see.” Sloane

“Thank you for the information.” Sloane

She walks off, De-Ron bows to them then goes after her.

“Tsk. Hunter’s are all the same.” Felix

“Have you dealt with hunter’s before?” Jona

“A few times they’re all greedy bastards that only care about money and themselves.” Felix

“Felix.” Jona

“Have some men take the bodies back to the station and someone to notify the family.” Felix

“Yes, sir.” Jona

Following behind Sloane.

“Sloane, why did you get so worked up?” De-Ron

She doesn’t answer him.

“Sloane, did you hear me?” De-Ron

She stops moving.

“De-Ron.” Sloane

“Huh? Yes?” De-Ron

“I want to find this killer.” Sloane

“Why?” De-Ron

“I just have to.” Sloane

“That doesn’t answer my question.” De-Ron

“Will you help me catch him?” Sloane

He closes his eyes then lowers his head.

“No.” De-Ron

“Huh? Why not?” Sloane

“Thi is a job for the police, not a bounty hunter, Sloane.” De-Ron

“So what! Doesn’t mean we can’t do something.” Sloane

“You're letting your emotions control you.” De-Ron

“I don’t care! Why won’t you help me?!” Sloane

“Is it because there’s no reward?! Is that your reason?!” Sloane

“Of course, is there any other reason?” De-Ron

“Are you serious?” Sloane

“Yes, no bounty, no reason for me to interfere with police work.” De-Ron

“Fine, I’ll find him myself! Stupid! Idiot!” Sloane

Mad, Sloane storms off, De-Ron doesn’t stop her.

“She’s such a kid.” De-Ron

Sloane heads to the first victim’s house, a two floor apartment in a suburb area, walking up the stairs she picks the lock to the door. Looking inside it's a pretty normal home, one bedroom, kitchen, and a living room nothing special about it. All she finds are the blood stains on the floor, one is in the bedroom while the other is in the living room.

“He stabbed or shot the one in the living room then headed for the bedroom.” Sloane

“My guess is the husband was wounded on purpose to hear the screams of his wife.” Sloane

“Dragging across the floor the husband tries to reach his wife. The killer kills her then finishes the husband.” Sloane

“How cruel, killing his wife first, letting him hear her cries.” Sloane

Sloane hears footsteps behind her, she pulls out her gun and points it at the front door. A woman in a long brown jacket, blue boots, brown hair, and green eyes holding flowers standing at the door. She lays the flowers by the entrance Sloane waits for her, she comes down the stairs and sits next to Sloane.

“Did you know them?” Sloane

“Yes, they took care of me when I was young. They were very kind.” Woman 1

“Is there anyone who would hurt them?” Sloane

“No, none. No one had a problem with them.” Woman 1

“Why would anyone want to hurt them?” Woman 1

“Can I ask one more question?” Sloane

“Sure.” Woman 1

“The man you saw that night, do you remember anything about him?” Sloane

“How did you..?” Woman 1

“I talk to the police about this case.” Sloane

She hesitates to answer, she starts to tremble.

“If it’s too hard to say then forget I ask.” Sloane

Sloane stands up.

“Thank you and sorry for your loss.” Sloane

Sloane starts to walk away.

“There is something.” Woman 1

Sloane stops.

“I went to visit them that night and I saw a man coming down the stairs. I thought he was a new tenant, but…” Woman 1

“But?” Sloane

“He was smiling.” Woman 1

“Smiling? Like he was happy?” Sloane

“No, not like that, the way he smiled I don’t know, it was terrifying.” Woman 1

“The moment I saw it, a cold chill was sent through my entire body. I just froze.” Woman 1

Sloane think for a moment.

“Thanks for telling me.” Sloane

“I think I know what to do.” Sloane

“Are you a detective?” Woman 1

“I’m a bounty hunter.” Sloane

Sloane pays a visit to the police station asking about the other victims and if anyone had a problem with them. They all were nice, kind people with no history with the police. Having her information Sloane heads for the hotel they planned to stay in, De-Ron books them a room, she gets her keys from the desk, go to her room, and enters. De-Ron is laying on one of the two beds.

“Welcome back.” De-Ron

“Your bag is on your bed.” De-Ron

She walks over to her bag, pulls out a few mags and hooks them to her belt.

“How did things go? Did you find the killer?” De-Ron

“I thought you didn’t care?” Sloane

“I don’t, just curious.” De-Ron

“I may know where and when he will attack. I’m going to try to stop him.” Sloane

She grabs her two blades, checks them, and puts them behind her back.

“Why are you so obsessed with this killer?” De-Ron

“Does it have to do with the father and daughter being killed?” De-Ron

Sloane stops moving.

“Did I hit a nerve?” De-Ron

She takes a deep breath.

“My father was killed when I was little, the killer was going to kill me too, but they didn’t.” Sloane

“The fear and helplessness I felt was unbearable. I can just feel how that little girl felt before they died.” Sloane

She loads her gun.

“I want to get justice for them and their families.” Sloane

“It’s not your responsibility to get justice for them.” De-Ron

“Maybe not, but I’m doing it cause I want to.” Sloane

Sloane heads for the door.

“I have a bad feeling about this. You sure you won’t leave this alone?” De-Ron

“Yes, I’m sure.” Sloane

“Be careful, okay.” De-Ron

“I will thank you.” Sloane

She leaves De-Ron stays quiet, wanting to say something to her.

“Idiot.” De-Ron

The nightmare of the dark night the lights of the shops are shining bright all across the streets. Sloane stands on a building rooftop looking over the busy streets. She keeps a close eye on everything hoping to spot her target, thinking about her father then about what De-Ron said.

I have a bad feeling about this. Be careful, okay.’ De-Ron

Sloane shakes her head.

Stop, focus. I can’t fail or someone else may die.’ Sloane

Hours have passed and nothing has happened, Felix and Jona are on patrol, Jona gets off the phone with the other officers.

“They haven’t spotted anyone suspicious.” Jona

“Damn it.” Felix

“Maybe he won’t attack tonight.” Jona

“Let’s hope you're right.” Fleix

Sloane is still standing up on the roof.

“Guess he's not coming out.” Sloane

About to leave she hears something coming from the back streets over by some houses.

“Huh? What is…?” Sloane

“Can’t be. Shit!” Sloane

She rushes towards the noise. A young girl and her brother are running through the streets. The boy falls, she runs back to help him up.

“Come on, we need to run.” Sister 1

“Sister.” Brother 1

“Let’s go!” Sister 1

They run into an alley, leading to a dead end, she turns around, stands in front of her brother.

“Stay away, you freak!” Sister 1

Wearing all black he smiles, slowly pulling out his sword. They back up close to the wall. Standing over them he brings up his sword smiling even bigger, shots are fired from above he jumps back. Sloane drops down from the roof, firing more shots getting him further back.

“Don’t worry, you're going to be alright. Just stay behind me.” Sloane

They both break into tears.

“Who are you? A cop?” Man 1

Sloane snaps her fingers, the three round orbs hanging from her jacket light up. They unlock from her jacket then float around her.

“A bounty hunter.” Sloane

She points her gun at him.

“Let the hunt begin.” Sloane

She fires a shot. Back at the hotel De-Ron is standing at the window with his sword in hand. In his eyes visions of a big fire flash on and off, gripping his sword tightly.

“Sloane.” De-Ron
