Chapter 7:

The snake and dragon

THE CITY OF STORIES

I find this quite vexing.

I thought that as I realized the hopelessness of the situation we were in.

To think it would take the legendary unrivaled unmatched all powerful demon Lamia this long to realize such a simple trick was at play.

The dragon girl on my back may pose a hindrance if I was to come across any obstacles.... But then again carrying another especially a child, is but a menial task for one such as I.

It’s been sixty minutes since we started searching and we still haven’t made any progress, finding the other two, or an exit.

Ti`s quite the hopeless situation if I do say so myself.

Actually as the narrator I here by declare it, ‘this is an undeniably hopeless situation.’

Ha!

If anything, rather than progress, the situation has taken a turn for the worse.

Ha! How amusing.

“Dragon girl tell me, how long do you think we have been trapped in this empty space.”

I asked.

“Hmm…Not too long, we just got here.” She said with a dopey look on her face.

“No we`ve been here, for at least an hour. It probably hasn’t occurred to you yet, but we haven’t gained much distance between ourselves, and the spot where we first fought.”

“If you look back you`ll notice the large crater you created is still within eye shot.” I continued.

She turned her head back to verify.

Her long black hair swung from side to side as she did.

“Really… That’s interesting.” She said with a dopey grin.

I sighed. “You don’t understand what that means do you?”

“Not really” she laughed.

“Are you some kind idiot?”

“Hehe-- I get that a lot, thanks.”

It wasn’t a compliment dragon girl.

I thought dragons were supposed to be at least smarter than humans, perhaps she’s simply an idiot by dragon standards.

“Ha!--I laughed--

She had a moronic smirk on her face.

--Listen closely I`m going to explain to you all that I have discovered thus far, so pay attention idiot dragon! First of all it appears that time remains static in this empty void. And second while we are able to change our direction and move forward in space, the size of that direction has been fixed to a value of which we have no control.”

“I see…Our time is static!!" she gasped.

"Damn it I hate getting shocked by static! And our direction is fixed of all things, unbelievable!” Dragon girl protested.

Does she think the word static only applies to electricity!!

No choice I`ll have to dumb it down for her as much as I can.

“To put it another way dragon girl time isn’t flowing in this space." I said.

"Case and point being your injured foot. You dragons heal faster than most and yet, your foot hasn’t healed at all in the sixty minutes we`ve been trapped here. That`s because the cells of your body aren`t aging in this space. ”

I simplified.

“….But when I set you on fire you a second ago you healed up just fine...” She replied with a question mark expression on her face.

I sighed.

“It’s not as if my cells divided and replaced the damaged cells which had been destroyed.” I clarified “In my case, it’s that the damaged cells themselves had been repaired.”

"Huh?"

"I used magic to repair them." I replied to her dumbfounded look.

She was silent for a moment, before she finally let out a loud gasp.

“Huh!”

The empty void was filled with her awe if I do say so myself.

“You can use magic!” She exclaimed, her long black hair swung side to side when she nearly leapt from shock, almost causing me to trip over as I carrying her. “You`re Incredible Ms unravel.”

Her surprise is justifiable I suppose, considering typically only humans,  divine beings or blessed beings excelled at magic.

It’s not as if I`m a mage or a witch, I just happen to know a single healing spell, I learnt ages ago from...

Who...

Who was it again, never mind that...I`ll gladly accept the praise.

“Ha! But of course, I am the legendary unrivaled unmatched all powerful demon Lamia.”

Seeing as movement would do us no good I stopped to plan and decided our next move and to think.

I gently placed the injured dragon on the floor.

We sat in for about two hours.

Though it felt like no time had passed between us.

After three or so hours the dragon girl proposed an idea. An incomprehensibly idiotic idea, but at this point I`m open to just about anything.

“You said something about distance being stuck." she grinned.

No I said it’s fixed.

“What if we tried going up!?”

She quickly abandoned the school uniform she had been wearing.

Throwing her pleated skirt and other accessories on the floor of the empty space.

Come to think of it…Why had she been wearing a school uniform up until now?

Today wasn’t a school day was it?

Giant wings sprung out from her human forms scapula bones.

"Ho-ho, Interesting idea but--"

“I’ll see you later,” she said, as she flew straight up with all her might.

Her giant wings let out a huge gust of wind, and she blew off into the air at a speed similar to that of a rocket.

Blowing dust, her uniform and other small particles my way.

SWOOSH!!

--it won`t work"

She was off.

She flew straight up without stopping for a moment; it was quite the sight to behold.

Unfortunately.

It didn’t take long for her to reach the limit of the fixed space.

For about three hours or so she flew up, without change in height.

It was as if she was suspended in motion unable to move.

“HEEYYYY!!”

I yelled out as loud as I can.

She flew back to the ground and gently landed avoiding leaning on her injured foot.

“You’ve been up there for a while now about three hours, clearly going up isn’t working.”

The girl looked visibly disappointed. She hid her eyes between the bangs of her long black hair.

“No luck huh.” She mumbled.

“How`d you know it’s been three hours?”

“I`ve been counting the seconds since we got here.” I replied.

“You’re amazing, It’s like you know everything.” She praised. You kind of remind me of Frey but you look more like Elea though.

Ha!

Her admiration is almost adorable, this is how one such as I otter be treated, not like the way those fools at the S.I.D treat me.

Perhaps it’s true what they say the snake and the dragon go well together.

"Frey... and Elea?"

"Yeah their my friends from school you remind me of them-- you`re smart like Frey and you look a lot like Elea--actually just your hair is the same...She has golden looking hair too you see."

"Oh is that so." I replied.

I`m not really interested in others...But I`ll listen to her rumblings seeing as I have nothing better to do at the moment.

“If only we knew who trapped us here then I could save them.” She fretted.

“Ha! Fret not; I may have an idea of who the perpetrator is."

"Though it will do us no good.” I added.

“Huh!?...Really?” She said in awe or was it surprise; it was probably awe, no as the narrator I declare it was definitely awe.

"Of course I am the legendary unrivaled unmatched all powerful demon Lamia!--

--It’s likely this is the doing of a certain deity, a deity from a time before man, a deity whose soul was ripped apart and destroyed by the other gods."

I grinned "This level of magic could only have been done by one such as her.”

"How do you know all that?" she asked.

"Ha! lets just say I`ve been around for a long time."

“Then…What do you think it is she wants?”

"Beats me—but if I had to guess she`s probably trying to revive herself, or maybe not who knows. One thing`s for sure your two friends are... probably going to die, and soon.”

“….....”

She didn’t reply so I continued.

“Why do you think it is that this shadow of a deity has been kidnapping people? Why do you think it is that no bodies have been found? Why do you think it is that time is stagnant in this space?”

“…............”

She didn’t reply so I continued.

“What do you think happened to all the people who’ve been trapped in here all this time? How do you think it is, this empty husk of a deity, sustained itself this far?”

I`ll be a sport and give you all three seconds to figure it out.

One.

Two.

And Three.

Did you figure it out?…Congratulation’s.

The answer is...It`s been using the kidnapped people as sustenance and...They all died.

Finally the girl spoke and with an unusually, uncharacteristic tone of concern.

“What do yo mea—” She asked.

I cut her off and continued with a grin.

—from the moment we first entered, our vitality or life energy has been steadily getting drained. In short we`re acting as a sort of fuel source/life support."

"You and I happen to have a high vitality but a mere human being on the other hand, won’t last too long in here.”

“Frey and Elea that means they’re going to—”

—Ha! That’s right in thirty minutes or so those two will die I presume.”

Large gaping tears fell from the corners of her cheeks.

She sat silently in silence.

Seeing the tears of a child never disappoint.

“Ha!”

I wonder what`ll happen next.

I wonder what his grand plan is—I mean if this really is his doing, that ratchet deity.

Ha, at this moment I wonder, what William is up to.

Probably nothing important.

As for the cry baby dragon and I…

Of course the two of us will also die, in about a year or two. Those other two girls will probably be dead any minute now.

It couldn’t be helped, they was simply nothing we could do, not all stories are happy ones, not all battles are won, all that’s left is to come to terms with one’s death.

I`m done with my turn narrating now.

good night now  t`was a fun story to tell.

And they all died happily ever after the end.

I shut my eyes and went to sleep.
