Chapter 17:

R.C.'s New Pet

C.A.N. Collector

*Tap* *Tap*

The Mini Dew-pra Cabra was knocking at the glass of the fish bowl it was imprisoned in. R.C. taped a plate to the top of it with duct tape, in order to fully enclose it.

It had been almost a week since the C.A.N. "hatched" from the glowing sphere. R.C. had been watching closely all this time out of pure curiosity.

There were certain qualities the mechanical creature had that intrigued him. It seemed to demonstrate a fair amount of intelligence for a robot.

R.C. began by showing it various objects through the glass of the fish bowl. It seemed to understand what they were. When he showed it things that didn't interest it, like human food or random knick knacks it would flick the glass slowly. As if saying to get it out of its sight. When something of interest was shown to it, like a pop can, it would aggressively attack the glass. If something dangerous was shown to it like a knife or fire, it would put its claws up to defend itself.

After watching its behavior, an idea came to R.C.

I bet I can train this thing.

He ran outside for a moment. Rummaging through some recycle bins next to his apartment complex, he pulled out some empty soda cans.

He placed the can inside his kitchen drawer. Undoing the top covering of the fish bowl, he tipped it on its side. The Mini Dew-pra Cabra crawled out.

R.C. visibility placed the can into the drawer. He wanted to see if it could figure out how to get to the can.

It instantly made its way down from the kitchen table and scaled its way up to the counter. Using its small bladed hands, it pried open the drawer. It consumed the can instantly.

R.C. tried this a few more times. Every single time it figured out how to get to the can.

Now R.C. wanted to see if it could follow orders. He held the scrap can in front of it.

"Bring me a fork."

It scurried into the kitchen and climbed up to the drawer again. A few seconds later it returned to R.C. with a fork in its mouth.

R.C. gave it the can as a reward.

"The old man mentioned something about the A.I. learning for itself. Maybe I can train it to recognize me as its master."

R.C. decided he should probably give his new "pet" a name.

"What the hell should I call this thing?"

He observed some of its characteristics.

In the past week it grew a little bit. Currently it was about the size of a soft ball. Unlike the original El Dew-pra Cabra, this one started to turn a more bluish color rather than green. Its overall appearance reminded R.C. of the Baja Splash flavor of Mr. Dew.

"I'm calling you Baja."

Baja seemed to respond to that because it bowed its head as if to show it submitted to R.C..
