Chapter 31:

The Gang

How Not to Be a Medium

My spirit sitter had a few ghosts under her who just got bored and acted as her detectives after they died. I knew she didn't want to tell her where to go without knowing she'd find her there. As she was giving instructions to her charges, I noticed that another spirit suddenly appeared nearby. I reached out quickly, grabbed his tie, and pulled it down. The ghost's head hit the table hard, making the furniture shake, and the man who asked for our help jumped in horror.

"Speak," I hissed. "You wouldn't break NWLORBGAM for no reason."

"It's my fault," he replied. "I didn't think they'd go that far. I used to work for the mafia, I was a financial fraudster, but they found out I wasn't giving them everything and they got me recently. I've already talked about this here, but they didn't find out about it until after my death. They want the money, but he hasn't had time to send it yet, and he's beginning to suspect that something isn't right. So they kidnapped his sister to finally force it on him, but none of these idiots are smart enough to say what they expect from him. Then I can help the police catch them, for now, let them release the little girl whose brother just wanted money to send her to her dream extra singing class."

"It's more of a gang that plays mafia," the commander-in-chief of Cecilia's ghosts suddenly interjected. “However, I confirm that the girl is alive, but slightly battered and trapped in the gang's headquarters. There are armed men there, I recommend informing the local authorities and handing over the investigation to them."

"Thank you all," I said, then apologizing for a moment to the concerned older brother.

I had to call one person. First, I informed the coordinator about the whole situation and asked for further instructions. He stated that since the girl's life is in danger, we will introduce a faster version of the protocol. Normally, I would pass this on to one of the mediums, who works closely with the police and is experienced in gathering evidence with the help of ghosts, as I once did with the taxi driver case. After all, they took care of the whole gang along with this trickster spirit later.

However, that day the coordinator called the police, explained what was going on, and used his authority. The detectives came to my place in twenty minutes and listened to the information we had collected. They confirmed that they did not suspect a kidnapping for ransom, but were aware of the existence of the gang, they were glad that they would have a chance to put them all in prison. They also thought that their headquarters was in a completely different part of the city.

"Maybe they're not all idiots there after all," muttered the money swindler who worked for them.

I later learned from the media that the girl had been found and soon after the gang was broken up and they were brought to trial. Mediums and spirits were later referred to as anonymous informants as always, but we didn't mind as long as it ended well. Sometime later, the man was waiting with his little sister for me to finish my shift and gave me a large bouquet of flowers as a thank you, which surprised me. Their parents came with them.

"Thank you," they said with tears in their eyes. “We were so scared that we didn't even think we could turn to you. We were sure that after a death we would be unable to do anything for our children."

Their mother started to cry, so I patted her shoulder reassuringly. I knew what they felt when they suddenly couldn't take care of their loved ones as they should. How many times have I seen the same thing? And at such moments I felt satisfied with being a medium. They asked me for one more thing.

"Your parents love you very much," I said. "And they're very proud of you." The siblings looked at me confused. “But they ask you to remember that money isn't everything. The most important is..."

"We have each other," said the girl. "That's what my mother would probably say."

"That's exactly what she said." I smiled.

A moment later I said goodbye to them and went back to the house, where Tristan was eyeing me suspiciously when he saw the flowers. I explained to him how I got them, but he went through the bouquet afterward to make sure there wasn't any note with a phone number or a date request. I just laughed and said he might tone down the jealousy a bit.
