Chapter 3:

The Two Tutors

Two-way learning

“What?!” I yelled in disbelief.

“You see. The principal owed me some big favors, so I used that to get you in. He accepted without a fuss”.

“What did you do to get this type of favor?”.

“...”.

“Aham… Continuing with your grades”.

“Hey, don't ignore the question”.

“Since I know that your only plan is to study until you pass out and also that doing that won't help you improve, I decided to assign you a tutor. Another student in your same grade”.

“Say what?!”.

“It's clear that you alone can’t make any progress. I think you would learn better with another student helping you. And you can also use the opportunity to socialize a little bit”.

“...”.

I think I know what Bernard is trying to do. When I moved in with my aunt Jane, I had to change schools, so I started middle school in a new area with new people and because I focused on getting better grades, I never really got any friends. Is not that I didn’t want to, I just never really tried to make any. Bernard was worried about this. Of course, Jane was too, but she let me do my thing and told me that there is plenty of time to make friends. On the other hand, Bernard told me that my school years are the best to make friends. But I think that putting a classmate as my tutor is too much just because he wants me to socialize. I feel like it is going to be a hassle.

“But don’t you think that’s too much? I can make friends just by being in class, I don’t really need any tutor.”

I'm trying to make him drop that idea.

“On the contrary, I think it is not enough”.

And I have failed.

“Two students will be better”.

“Two?!”.

“I have prepared the best tutors for you. They are the best students in the whole grade, I have already seen their grades and they ace them”.

“Incredible!”.

“Right!”.

They seem like geniuses and although being taught by people who are in your grade can be really good since they would know everything you are going through in class, I'm unsure about it. Maybe we will not get along and that will make the whole tutoring process, and since it's been a few years since I socialized with people my age, I'm not sure I know how to handle people my age, let alone two geniuses. What could they be like? I am sure they are way different from your regular students. Maybe they are a very elegant pair, perfectly looking guys. Or maybe they are the stereotypical “nerd” guys with glasses, carrying their books everywhere.

(Knock-knock)

While I was lost in thought, someone knocked on the door.

“Mr. Hill?” a feminine and soft voice comes from the other side of the door.

“Oh! Must be them. Come in!” exclaimed Bernard excitedly.

I am somehow excited and terrified at the same time. I mean, I am about to know the best Freshmen, in a private school. Who are they?? How do they look?? I’m burning my only three neurons trying to make an image of them in my mind.

“Excuse me”. Said the person while entering.

It is a girl with glasses and short hair that had the tips dyed red.

A girl? Is completely different from the image I was doing inside my head. Well, she has the glasses at least. And I have to say she is really cute, the dyed hair fits perfectly with her red glasses.

Behind her entered another girl with long brown hair and sharp eyes that seemed to look straight into your soul.

Another girl? And she is cute too. Am I dreaming?

These are my future tutors? they are totally different from what I imagine, I didn't even consider them being girls. Having two beauties to tutor me is a dream I never thought I would be able to live.

Imagine being at a table with your book, with one girl on each side, getting their faces closer while arranging their hair behind their ears.

Well anyway putting aside my fantasies. I clean the saliva coming out of my mouth and look at the two girls. They seem somehow familiar, like I have seen them before.

"Thank you for coming," said Bernard.

"No problem Mr. Hills" says the girl with glasses in a soft tone.

"So, why did you call us here?" asks the other girl with a harsher tone.

"Let me first introduce you guys” he said while standing up.

“Chris, this is Yuki Nakano” pointing to the girl with glasses. “Her parents are from Japan".

I'm a little surprised because I had never seen someone from Japan before, or did I?

"And this is Lucy Auger” Bernard continued while pointing at the girl with long hair.

“Her parents are from Germany” It's my first time seeing someone from Germany, but I still feel like I see someone like her.

"Girls, this is dumb guy".

"Hey!".

"I know dumb guy already" said Yuki.

I can tell, based on her expression and her tone, that she may believe “dumb” is my actual name.

“Chris! My name is Chris Miller! And do we actually know already?”.

Lucy just stared at me with her sharp look. It's almost like she is scanning me with her eyes.

“Yeah, I’ve seen this guy before”.

The three of us look at each other thinking. Bernard looks at us intrigued.

“Ah!”.

We all remember each other.

“You are the guy that had all his problems wrong” both said at the same time.

I finally remember these girls. These are the girls I encountered on the entrance exam. Can’t believe these girls got perfect scores on the exam. Well, they did both seem very smart, and they also helped me out with my formulas and so. It makes sense.

Guess I should give it a try at least, if I see that we don't match and there is no progress then I'll stick to my plan of non-stop studying until I get higher scores or die, whatever comes first.

"Seems like you guys already know each other, that's perfect, it will make things easier".

"Make easier, what?" Lucy asked.

"I'll have you girls tutor this guy".

"Huh?!" They don't like the idea at all.

“You girls are the smartest in the grade and this dumbass is the stupidest. Although he seems long away from salvation, I’m sure you can help him raise his grades”.

I looked at them, and they looked at me. This is an awkward situation. Imagine having perfect scores in an entrance exam for a private school and having to teach some moron with bad grades like me. Although they did help me on the day of the entrance exam, I don't think they want to tutor me for a whole year. These perfect girls, with perfect grades next to someone like me, who is incompetent in everything. I want to run to my house and cry in my bed while eating ice cream and listening to sad lo-fi music.

But this is indeed a good opportunity. Being taught by two geniuses will surely help me raise my grade. But that situation seems nearly impossible. I don't think they would like to be my tutors. I am not sure how Bernard is going to convince them.
