Chapter 1:

At the grave of the one I once cared about most

Re: Born again as the strongest darkness mage in another world where my long lost childhood friend is my cute and bashful tsundere maid: romantic magical adventure with romance and magic! RE:異世界で誕生

I kneel at the grave of the one I once cared about most, a flower of my choosing sat in front of her headstone. As with every year since it happened three years ago, I've come back to this place to grieve the loss of my best friend, on the anniversary of the day she died.

It was any normal school day. Maths was boring, English was tedious, and we enjoyed our lunch together, groaning at the bell signalling it's end. And, as always, we were walking home together, until splitting off at the same road we always did. That is, until a truck came barrelling down the road, easily exceeding double the speed limit. I noticed in time, she didn't, and I watched as she was crushed by the immense force of the vehicle as it hit her. My oldest friend, the person I loved, died in front of my very eyes.

Under better conditions, I'd stay at the grave longer. I don't believe in an afterlife, but somehow, talking to her grave made me feel... comfort, I suppose? Like I can still converse with the person I shared so many fun days with. But the rain that was predicted to cease by the afternoon only came down heavier and heavier as the day went on. Wiping a tear from my already soaked face, I stand, give my goodbyes to the grave of my dearly departed, and mindlessly begin the walk back home.

My head filled with thoughts of days passed, of the happiness I'll never be able to recapture, I hardly pay attention to my surroundings as I trudge through the wet streets of the city. With my head hung low, my glasses begin to slip from my face, and eventually fall off as I'm crossing that very same road where she was killed on that terrible day. Slowly, I crouch down and attempt to pick them up. As I do so, I become vaguely aware of two lights approaching from some ways off. When I eventually grab the now-dirty glasses and put them on my face, I look towards the light, now approaching at high speed.

'is that...'

My thought is cutoff as I'm struck with a force unlike any other I'd ever felt, and my consciousness is nearly knocked clean out of me. Even so, I understand my fate. On the very same road, by the very same driver, in the very same truck, I was being sent to meet my beloved and lost in the great beyond.
