Chapter 29:

Cannibal Magical

Beyond The Void

“Shit!” Me and Louise immediately jumped in front of Emmett, combining our magic to cast a shield strong enough to repel the Wilkins, who were pushed back.

“What the fuck just happened?” Emmett started freaking out. “Why did they just randomly attack me from out of nowhere?”

“Calm down, Emmet!” I pushed him back. “Just calm yourself a bit, panicking won’t do anything! Stay back and let me and Louise handle this!”

“I got dibs on the dad!” Louise said, waiting, as the two started rushing towards us once more. “I’ve got a bone to pick with him.”

Louise used magic to push the dad further away and started chasing after him, leaving only Emmett’s mother here for me to deal with.

Emmett grinded his teeth but ultimately stayed back, and I didn’t blame him for that at all, since it would have been tough for him to fight his own parents.

The mother suddenly got on all fours and attacked once again. I conjured a wall of flame which she proceeded to run straight through, causing her to writh on the ground in pain.

“I thought they don’t feel pain.” Emmett commented as he watched the scene unfold.

“Technically, they’re not supposed to, but I think the spell causes them to feel it, since their consciousness is forced back into their deceased body. It’s basically as if they were alive.” I explained.

“Except for the fact that they’re mindless zombies.”

“Yup, except for that.”

“Look out!” A voice from behind me called out.

I turned around In the nick of time to see Louise push me out of the way as a lightning arrow pierced her right in the shoulder.

“Louise!” I caught her in my arms as she stumbled and collapsed.

“What now?” Emmett turned to try and figure out where that arrow came from while I placed Louise on the ground gently.

“Damn it, why’d you take that arrow for me?” I asked her. “Did you forget that I killed your brother?”

She tried to formulate a response but couldn’t.

“Shit, she’s losing consciousness!” I turned to Emmett. “Can you heal her?

“Dude.” Emmett stared at something all around us. “We’ve got bigger problems to deal with right now.”

I looked up to see the entire cemetery was full of zombies that had resurrected using the same spell I’d used on Emmett’s parents, one of whom was still burning on the ground while crying out in pain.

Suddenly I felt something jump at me from behind, I turned and raised my hand to protect my face. The zombie bit into my arm and tore off a piece of skin before I managed to push it off and slam a fireball on it, instantly burning it to ash.

“These zombies are pretty weak, the problem is that there’s way too many!” I told Emmett.

They started surrounding us from every side, I picked up Louise and handed her to Emmett.

“Take care of her, I’ll get us out of here.” I said and he responded with a panicked nod, his eyes wide open.

I conjured up another wall of flame which the row of zombies in front of us charged into, some instantly burning away while others fell to the floor and cried in pain.

“Those who don’t dissolve are magic users!” I told Emmett. “They’re still able to use magic even in this state! I remember her brother was able to, so be careful.”

“Right!”

Suddenly, Emmett’s mother stood back up, the flames burning her completely gone. She then pounced on us again, but I sliced her in half with a lightning blade, she then fell back to the ground and screamed once again. Emmett averted his eyes at the sight of his mother in such a state.

“Sorry.” I told him.

“It’s fine, I get it.”

I then proceeded to conjure up more walls of flame, burning more zombies, but more kept coming, and I eventually got exhausted.

“Switch with me!” Emmett handed me Louise and then started conjuring his own flame wall.

I gasped for air while holding Louise, as Emmett went on a rampage. Noticing the amount of blood flowing down from her shoulder wound, I set her down on the ground and placed my hand on the injury, attempting to heal it and minimize the damage as much as I could, even if my efforts would prove to be nearly fruitless due to my energy reserves being close to zero at the moment.

Louise started to regain consciousness and started groaning as she slowly opened her eyes.

“What happened…?” she managed to mutter.

“You got injured, it’s alright.” I told her. “Just relax, Emmett’s protecting us for now.”

“Protecting us..?” She got up and noticed the huge horde of zombies trapping us in. “H-How are we supposed to get out of here?”

“We’ll find a way.” I lied.

She then closed her eyes again, clearly in pain. My healing then completely stopped, as my last reserve was finally drained.

“Damn…” I looked back to see how Emmett was doing, and saw him still holding back the zombies, but he looked completely exhausted, I wouldn’t have been surprised if he’d collapsed at any given moment.

“Try to conserve your energy!” I shouted at him.

“Easy to say that, until you see dozens of these things running at you!” He answered before conjuring up yet another flame wall. At this point, he was spamming them like a cheat code in a video game, with no regards to his stamina bar.

“Are you children tired of squabbling already?” A voice suddenly echoed, we immediately looked to see the wave of zombies parting, and Selphine walking towards us.

“You!” Emmett sent a huge fireball towards her but she brushed it off like it was nothing.

“Calm yourself, little one.” She smirked. “You’re in no position to cast any huge spells no? Your energy reserves are pretty low.”

So those zombies were her doing after all, huh? I had suspected it, but now that she showed herself, it officially confirmed that she was the one behind this, so did she know we were going to come here? Either way, she clearly didn’t seem to think of us as much of a threat to her.

Switch with me!

No, not this time.

What, you don’t trust a binding contract, even?

I ignored him and focused on Selphine.

“What do you want with us?” Emmett asked her. “Why’ve you been after the masked order all these years?”

“I’m from Earth.” She said.

I froze. What did she just say?

“Huh? What’s “Earth”?” Emmett looked confused, but Selphine had clearly directed those words towards me.

“Do you know what they call Obrillis back on Earth, my dear Arthur?”she continued.

I didn’t answer her, still reeling from the shock of her reveal, but she said it anyway.

“The Void.”
