Chapter 1:

The Transfer Student

Kai & Takumi

As I sat alone in the corner of the classroom, doodling absentmindedly in my notebook, I couldn't help but feel a deep sense of boredom and disinterest. The oppressive monotony of the classroom walls seemed to close in on me, suffocating my desire for something, anything, to break the tedious routine. In my mind, I yearned for an event of epic proportions, like the school being set ablaze or a colossal meteorite hurtling towards Earth, ready to shatter the world into countless fragments. However, the rational part of me quickly dismissed such whimsical fantasies. After all, even if a meteorite were to strike, I would be in grave danger, so it was best not to wish for such catastrophic events.

Sighing in resignation, I whispered to myself, "Oh man, I wish the day would be over fast so I could go home already." It felt as if time had slowed to a crawl, and each passing second dragged on like an eternity.

Just as I resigned myself to endure the endless monotony, a familiar voice disrupted my thoughts. "Hey, Takumi-kun! How's it going?" called out Hiroshi, his cheerful tone cutting through the classroom's heavy atmosphere.

"Kun?" I questioned internally, raising an eyebrow at the unusual honorific he used. "Is there something wrong with calling you 'kun,' Takumi-kun?" he asked, picking up on my unspoken confusion.

"Not a problem," I replied, my voice carrying a hint of apathy. "Anyway, what do you want, Hiroshi?"

Leaning against my desk, Hiroshi's eyes sparkled with excitement. "Hey, have you heard about the new transfer student? I heard he's supposed to be joining our class today," he exclaimed, eager to share the news.

"What? That's news to me," I responded, feigning disinterest. "Anyway, is that all you came here to tell me about? A new transfer student? Something like that is not worth my time."

A mischievous grin spread across Hiroshi's face, causing me to narrow my eyes suspiciously. "Hm?" I questioned, wary of his intentions. "What's with that grin? You're not planning on doing something to the new student, are you?"

He raised his hands in mock surrender. "No, no. But this could be an opportunity for you though," he suggested, his voice dripping with implication.

"Huh?" I replied, my curiosity piqued despite my attempts to resist. "Look at it from my perspective. You have no friends, well, besides me," Hiroshi continued, a teasing lilt in his voice.

"You're not my friend," I retorted, my tone betraying a mix of annoyance and amusement.

"Awww, come on, don't be like that, Takumi-kun!" Hiroshi whined playfully, his antics causing a faint smile to tug at the corners of my lips.

"Enough! Quit touching me and get to the point already," I grumbled, pushing him away gently.

Undeterred, Hiroshi persisted, his voice now filled with genuine concern. "What I'm saying is that this could be your chance to make a new friend with the new student," he suggested, his eyes reflecting a glimmer of hope.

A new friend, huh? The thought lingered in my mind, challenging my solitary existence. But deep down, I couldn't deny the truth of Hiroshi's words. I didn't have time to waste my days making friends. Besides, I was content with having just one friend.

"One? Wait, are you saying that I'm your number one friend?" Hiroshi asked, a hint of excitement evident in his voice.

"Who else would I be talking about?" I replied with a nonchalant shrug, secretly appreciating the bond we had formed over time.

"Awwwwww, Takumi, you're too kind. I'm thinking about kissing you," Hiroshi teased, a mischievous glint in his eyes.

"Gross, don't even. And get off of me. The teacher's coming," I exclaimed, pushing him away once again as our teacher entered the classroom.

"Okay, everyone, please take your seats. I would like to announce that we have a new transfer student who will be joining our class today. Please come in and state your name," the teacher announced, capturing the attention of the entire classroom.

As the door opened, a wave of silence washed over the room as all eyes turned toward the newcomer. The transfer student stepped forward, radiating an air of confidence. It was as if he had already become popular on his first day.

"Please introduce yourself to the class," the teacher prompted, allowing the transfer student to make his introduction.

"Hello, everyone. I'm Kai Hachimura. I'm from Kyoto," he greeted the class with a warm smile.

"Uh... is that all?" the teacher said, unimpressed by his seemingly lackluster introduction.

Hachimura chuckled softly, a hint of nervousness lingering in his voice. "Hahaha, I really don't do well with introductions. Oh, but I'm thankful for being here with everyone, and I hope that we all can be friends," he expressed sincerely, his gaze sweeping across the classroom.

I clicked my tongue in annoyance. "Tsk, give me a break," I muttered under my breath, unimpressed by his attempt at camaraderie.

"Thank you, Hachimura, for introducing yourself," the teacher acknowledged, gratitude evident in her voice.

"My pleasure," Hachimura responded politely, making his way towards the seat next to mine, my curiosity now piqued by his presence.

"Hey there, you must be Kitamura, right?" he greeted me, extending a hand in a friendly gesture.

"Yeah, I am. Can I help you with something?" I replied, cautiously observing him.

"I'm looking forward to our class together," Hachimura stated with a subtle smirk, leaving me wondering about the hidden intentions behind his words.

As the teacher resumed the class, signaling the resumption of the mundane routine, a nagging thought took root in my mind. Who was this Hachimura, and what role would he play in my life? Little did I know that this encounter marked the beginning of a journey that would unravel mysteries, forge unexpected connections, and challenge the very fabric of my existence.

"All right, everyone, class is in session. Please pay attention," the teacher declared, her voice fading into the background as the enigma of Hachimura enveloped my thoughts.
