Chapter 3:

It's a Mad Mad World [Part 2]

Particles of Paradise

2nd August

The hands of the clock ticked relentlessly as the room grew eerily silent. It was 3:45 PM, and Yuki found himself standing in Naomi’s house. His mind still reeling from the unsettling revelation she had just disclosed. "So, you can take me to that place... Avalon?" Yuki questioned, his voice trembling with a mix of curiosity and trepidation.

Naomi's eyes gleamed with an intensity that sent a chill down Yuki's spine. "Yes, Yuki. I can transport you to Avalon," she replied, her voice carrying an air of solemnity.

Doubt laced Yuki's words as he hesitated, his heart pounding in his chest. "You're not trying to pull off some twisted prank, are you? This sounds too... otherworldly."

A haunting smile played upon Naomi's lips, casting an unsettling aura around her. "Yes, I can. And no, this is not some elaborate prank, Yuki. You have to believe me."

Yuki's breath hitched, his mind struggling to grasp the magnitude of what he was being told. "Assuming what you say is true... How are we supposed to reach Avalon? Is there some kind of gateway?"

Naomi's gaze held a dark intensity as she nodded slowly. "Yes, Yuki. There is indeed a gateway that links our world to the twisted realm of Avalon."

Yuki's voice quivered as he ventured further. "So, like a wormhole? A portal bridging dimensions?"

Naomi's laughter filled the air, but it held a haunting quality that sent shivers down Yuki's spine. "Calling it a wormhole might not be the best analogy. Avalon is not a different dimension; it's a pocket dimension, as I mentioned earlier. It's like a hidden realm coexisting with ours."

Yuki's heart pounded in his chest as he pressed for more details. "And where... Where is this gateway? Where do we access it?"

Naomi's gaze bore into Yuki's soul, her eyes filled with an enigmatic intensity. "You've been there before," she murmured.

A surge of dread coursed through Yuki's veins. "You mean... the storeroom?" he uttered, his voice barely above a whisper.

Naomi's lips curled into a malicious grin. "Indeed, the storeroom serves as the gateway to the twisted horrors that lie within Avalon."

Yuki's mind spun with a concoction of fear and curiosity. "I... I'm not mentally ready for this. It's too much to comprehend."

Naomi's smile remained, but it held a hint of malevolence. Naomi contemplated his words for a moment, her smile unwavering. "Take all the time you need, Yuki. In the meantime, would you like something to drink? An energy drink, perhaps? If not, coffee can be arranged."

Yuki's gratitude was evident as he replied, "An energy drink would be great, but if you don't have any, coffee will do just fine."

"Consider it done," Naomi responded cheerfully as she made her way to the kitchen, leaving Yuki to process the astonishing possibilities that awaited him in the hidden realm of Avalon.

Naomi prepared the coffee in the kitchen, expecting to find Yuki waiting for his drink upon her return. However, to her dismay, he was nowhere to be found. Frustration welled up within her. "That idiot... I should have known he would do something like this," she muttered under her breath.

She peered out of the window, hoping to catch a glimpse of Yuki in the distance. The advantage of her window's strategic position provided her with a clear view of the surrounding area, making it relatively easy for her to spot him.

With a determined expression, Naomi retrieved a small card from her pocket. It seemed ordinary at first glance, but she knew its true nature. Manipulating the card's surface as if it were a touchscreen smartphone, she accessed its hidden features.

Meanwhile, Yuki, struggling to process the events unfolding around him, sprinted through the neighbourhood in the direction of his house. The streets were shrouded in darkness, the familiar houses transforming into eerie silhouettes. An unsettling fog seemed to cling to the air, distorting reality.

Desperate for a moment to catch his breath, Yuki took a left turn and paused, leaning against a decaying wall. The very atmosphere seemed to pulse with otherworldly energy, filling him with an inexplicable sense of dread. Shadows danced around him, whispering secrets that his mind struggled to comprehend.

After a brief respite, Yuki resumed his sprint, his footsteps echoing in the desolate streets. Each turn he took only led him deeper into an inexplicable labyrinth, where familiar landmarks twisted into grotesque forms. The houses seemed to leer at him with broken windows and decaying façades, their dark interiors concealing untold horrors.

As he ran, a realization dawned upon him, chilling him to the core. "No matter which direction I take or how far I run, I always end up back at this same spot. Naomi must have done something," he concluded, his frustration giving way to a primal fear that gnawed at his insides.

His heart pounding in his chest, Yuki retraced his steps, retracing the path he had come from. But the streets seemed to morph and shift, defying his attempts to escape their clutches. The air grew heavy with an oppressive malevolence, and whispers seemed to echo through the darkened alleyways.

Consumed by anger and fear, Yuki shouted into the empty air, his voice a desperate plea. "I KNOW THAT YOU ARE HERE! JUST COME OUT ALREADY!"

Silence greeted his outburst

But it was not the comforting silence of solitude. It was a silence pregnant with unspeakable horrors, a silence that seemed to mock his vulnerability.

Yuki struggled to keep his composure, his breath ragged as he contemplated his next move. Just as his mind teetered on the edge of despair, he heard calm footsteps approaching from behind. Slowly, he turned to find Naomi standing there, a shadowy figure emerging from the darkness. The dim light revealed a wicked grin etched across her face.

"You were shouting pretty loud, you know," she remarked, her voice laced with a sinister undertone. "I could hear it from 100 meters away."

Yuki's body trembled, his voice trembling as he confronted the embodiment of his fears. "I don't care about that. Just let me go," he demanded, his words laden with desperation.

Naomi's eyes gleamed with an unholy light as she leaned closer, her voice dripping with dark amusement. "You really want to go?" she whispered, sending shivers down his spine.

"YEAH!" Yuki's voice cracked with a mixture of terror and determination.

The eerie silence hung in the air as Naomi's gaze intensified, her features contorted with an unsettling mix of amusement and menace. "This might be your last chance to visit Avalon. You should think about it," she urged, her words laced with a chilling undertone.

"Why would I want to visit a place that I don't even know if it exists?" Yuki retorted, his voice quivering with a mixture of scepticism and unease.

Naomi's smile widened, revealing teeth that seemed sharper and more menacing in the dim light. "Think about it..." she whispered, her voice trailing off into the darkness.

The oppressive atmosphere seemed to suffocate Yuki as his mind struggled to comprehend the unimaginable horrors that awaited him. He felt a surge of conflicting emotions—fear, curiosity, and a gnawing sense of inevitability. Processing the overwhelming information thrust upon him proved to be a daunting task, his thoughts a labyrinth of uncertainty and trepidation.

In the depths of his mind, a warning echoed, urging him to turn away, to flee from the encroaching darkness. "If this turns out to be another twisted prank, I'll confront her like never before," Yuki vowed silently, his grip on reality tenuous at best.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity of torment, Yuki made up his mind. "Fine. But this better not be some sick joke," he declared, his voice laced with caution and a glimmer of newfound resolve.

Naomi's eyes gleamed with a mixture of satisfaction and malice. "It's not a prank unless you try to run away," she hissed, her words hanging in the air like a haunting melody.

5:15 PM

The darkness enveloped the school grounds as Yuki and Naomi ventured towards the forbidden territory of the store room. Shadows danced ominously around them as if whispering secrets that sent shivers down their spines. The air was heavy with an oppressive stillness, broken only by the sound of their hushed footsteps.

Naomi's voice cut through the silence, tinged with an unsettling eagerness. "Won't you try to run away this time?" she questioned, her eyes glinting with an enigmatic intensity.

Yuki's gaze narrowed, a mixture of determination and unease etched on his face. "No," he declared firmly, his voice laced with a tinge of defiance. "I need to know the truth. Running won't get me the answers I seek."

A faint smile played on Naomi's lips, a hint of darkness lurking within her expression. "Very well. Prepare yourself, for the path we tread is not for the faint of heart."

With a deep breath, Yuki steeled himself, bracing for what awaited them within the depths of the storeroom. The wooden door creaked open, revealing a dimly lit chamber shrouded in mystery. As they stepped inside, a chill gripped the air, prickling their skin with invisible tendrils.

Naomi's eyes glimmered with an intensity that sent a shiver down Yuki's spine. "Do you believe in ghosts?" she whispered, her voice barely above a breath.

Yuki's brows furrowed in confusion. "No, why?" he replied, a sense of unease creeping into his voice.

Without offering an explanation, Naomi raised her hands, and a sudden gust of wind swept through the room. The atmosphere grew electric, charged with otherworldly energy. Shadows danced and writhed like sinister spectres, their ethereal forms mocking the boundaries of reality.

Yuki's heart pounded in his chest as he watched in awe and trepidation. The room transformed before his eyes, the walls dissolving into a swirling vortex of darkness. The very fabric of reality seemed to warp, revealing a blinding light that forced him to shield his eyes.

A sharp pain seared through Yuki's head, causing him to stagger. The room spun around him, colours merging and shifting in a dizzying whirlwind. He clenched his teeth, fighting against the overwhelming torment, as if his mind and soul were being subjected to a malevolent force.

As abruptly as it began, the chaos ceased, leaving Yuki disoriented and gasping for breath. His vision slowly cleared, revealing a sight that defied comprehension. He stood in a vast and majestic hall, bathed in an ethereal glow. Stained glass windows adorned the dome above, casting vibrant hues of crimson, sapphire, and emerald across the expanse. Intricate carvings adorned the pillars, depicting ancient symbols and arcane sigils.

Yuki's gaze darted towards Naomi, desperate for answers. But instead of offering clarity, her smile held a haunting enigma. "Welcome," she murmured, her voice laced with a chilling allure.

A sense of foreboding clung to the air as if they had crossed a threshold into a realm beyond human comprehension. Yuki's mind raced with questions, his curiosity battling against the instinctive fear that gnawed at his core.

And then, in the midst of the swirling uncertainty, Naomi posed an unexpected question, her words hanging in the air like a spectre of anticipation. "When's your birthday, though?" she inquired, her voice laced with an eerie undertone, leaving Yuki bewildered and teetering on the precipice of an unknown fate.
