Chapter 4:

Letting You Stay

Our History

I thought I would just get dressed but I found myself putting on one of the suits from the wardrobe in my room. Somehow, I felt wearing jeans would be inappropriate. Well, it's actually his own damn fault, considering he was way too overdressed for breakfast. Whatever. I didn't bother with a tie and left the topmost button on my shirt unbuttoned. A bit of casualness won't hurt. This way he can see I'm not giving in completely.

I hesitated before knocking on his door. I felt weird and slightly nervous. And this made me even more nervous. But when I finally entered his room, this slightly subsided. I saw him sitting at his desk reading something with such calmness as if he was having the time of his life and he had nothing to be concerned about.

I carefully closed the door behind me without making a noise but he still noticed my presence. He looked up from the pages of the book he was reading but only for a moment.

"You wanted to talk with me," I said, reminding him that my intrusion is not a way of bothering him, since he was the one who asked me to be here in the first place.

"What do you want?" he put down the book in his hand and looked at me with a serious expression on his face.

"Beg your pardon?"

"I don't know you, don't know where you came from or why you are here. Your intentions are also unclear," he leaned back in his chair and crossed his arms before his chest. "I even gave you the opportunity to work for me." As if this was such a huge feat that I should be dancing with joy upon hearing it. Well, I won't.

"For which I'm grateful, even though I deserved it."

"You..." He was clearly annoyed by what I just said. Not that he could do a damn thing about it. If I were to tell him what I believe happened, he'll only think I've lost my mind and will lock me up somewhere and throw the keys away.

"Come on, we both know that's the least you can do after I saved your ass yesterday. Besides, I thought you were just giving an excuse for your father to have a solid explanation for my presence in your house at night. Anyway, who has a personal assistant, who is available 24/7 these days? Do you think you're in a movie or something? Or is this a rich man thing?"

"You didn't answer my questions."

"Neither did you. But you don't have to be afraid. I'm not a hitman if that's what you're concerned about."

"Then why are you here?"

"Wish I could answer that myself but I can't. You won't believe me even if I tell you but I just happened to be here. I don't know more than you do."

"Really? Then are you implying you don't even know who you are?"

"Now that I actually do know."

"So?"

"Do you really care?"

"Well, of course. I believe I do deserve to know who is the person, who will be working for me and be beside me at all times," he said with a dignity I only wish I could possess.

"Are you saying that you're really hiring me? You don't even know me. I might only bring you harm." Hearing this, he gave me a one-sided smile. This was the first time I saw him smiling since I met him. And now that I witnessed it, I have the urge to tell him that he should do so more often. Not that I would ever dare say this out loud. At least not now, not in a situation like this one.

"Otherwise, how would I explain to my father that my new assistant just left within a day? It would ruin my reputation," he said, while he pretentiously fixed his tie. Did I mention I just love three-piece suits? The appearance it gives to a man is just different. And he is wearing one. He stood up and slowly walked towards me then he stopped right before me. He casually put his hands in his pockets and smiled right into my face. I don't know why but I didn't dare to move an inch. "But, if I ever catch you doing anything that may cause harm to me or my family, I will personally break your neck."

His voice became so sinister it gave me the chills, especially since he was looking straight into my eyes. I can't believe that such a young guy can be this frightening.

"Understand. But..."

"But what?"

"I don't want to be rude but how much will you pay?"

"Don't worry! You will be satisfied."

"Can you say the same about my duties as well?" Which I pretty much doubt at this point.

"I hate to break it to you but not really. Most of them are just menial work I don't have the time or inclination to do. Do you drive?" He said this in such a carefree voice that it astonished me. These rich people really do deal with matters differently. But at least he was honest with me this time.

"I have a license if that's what you're asking."

"Then take me to my office. And don't worry, I will tell you the way just hurry up!" He walked past me as if he was already convinced I'd follow him. I actually envy this kind of conviction. Wish I could have someone who I can trust completely. Who will always be there when I most need it.

Hurray, I've become the driver of an arrogant guy who thinks he has power over me just because I'm his subordinate. But who am I kidding? Isn't this just like in a regular job? The only difference is that I get paid more. Which is not bad considering. But still...

I'm not sure how I'll get out of this situation but for now, I just need to survive this day. Then we'll see. No way I'm staying here and let me get ordered about.
