Chapter 8:

A New Adventure

Redframe (Pre-edit)

After we had eaten lunch for the day Tiaria had sheepishly asked me if I would accompany her on a quest the next day to slay monsters. I, of course, accepted. It sounded like something that would be interesting and would perhaps help me remember what had happened before I awoke without my memories. After that we shared pleasantries before Tiaria had to head back to the Tabernacle to perform her duties as an apprentice god-candidate. I took the rest of the day to rest up before eating dinner at the Inn and then headed to bed.

The next morning I was completing my usual routine of eating breakfast at the Inn. I had learned that the young girl’s name who was related to the Innkeeper was Carie. I was teasing Carie a bit when I felt a familiar tug at my robe.

“Good morning Tiaria.” I said while turning around to face her.

“Good morning Yu, do you mind if I take a seat?” Tiaria responded. Tiaria was wearing her normal dress and sword. I motioned for her to take a seat next to me.

“How often do you wash your dress?” I asked while propping my chin on my hand.

Tiaria looked at me questioningly. “Never, but I take it to the cleansing square every day to clean it.”

“What’s that?” I asked.

“It’s a magical device that removes blemishes from anything you put onto it.” Tiaria replied.

“Hmm.” I guess she left out magical devices because they so obviously existed to her. This was the first time I was really hearing about it. Although, I figured the lights in the Inn must have been magic since they were flameless.

“Make sure you have your adventurer’s license handy when we go to the gate.” Tiaria said to me while playing with a string on her dress.

“My what?” I asked.

Tiaria froze up.

I did too.

“We forgot to register!” We said at the same time before both laughing with each other.

“I knew we forgot something.” She said

I shrugged gave her a look that said “oh well.”

“Well, that’s fine, we can get that on the way to the gate.” Tiaria said while smiling at me.

Tiaria pulled me up from my seat and led me out of the Inn by my robe.

“You really like pulling me around.” I said to her as we moved past the Inn doors.

“It’s easier than trying to tell you where to go.” Tiaria said matter-of-factly.

“I feel like a dog.” I said with a laugh.

“A what?” Tiaria asked

I blinked a few times trying to think about what I had said.

“A pet.” I reiterated.

“Ah, yeah, I guess you kind of are my pet in a way.” Tiaria said with a proud, but sarcastic, nod.

We continued to talk, jabbing each other with sarcastic remarks, before arriving at a rather small building made of brick work and tin. Tiaria stopped, forcing me to stop with her.

“We can register you here.” Tiaria said.

Tiaria knocked on a tin covered window. The tin portion of the window slid back and an older man appeared behind the glass. Towards the bottom of the glass there was a hole carved out where I guessed the transfer of items could take place.

“Ah, Lord Apprentice, how can I help you today?” The old man seemed happy to see Tiaria.

“Drew!” Tiaria said with a smile. “This is my new acquaintance Yu, he is from out of town and needs to register.”

“Sure thing.” Drew rummaged around behind the counter before pulling out a notepad. “When did you come in lad?”

“A few- ah!” Tiaria elbowed me in my side and glared at me. “Earlier today.” I said with an unconvincing laugh.

Drew wrote some things down on the paper before pulling out a bronze trinket and hammering a chisel to imprint some words onto it. Drew gave a satisfied nod before shoving the trinket through the hole below the glass towards Tiaria and I.

“There you go lad, make sure to keep that with you, it’s three silver coins to replace.”

“Thanks Drew!” I said as I took the bronze trinket. “Right, pockets.” I patted myself down looking for pockets before pausing and looking at Tiaria with my best impression of a sad puppy.

Tiaria let out a big sigh and put out her hand towards me. “Give it here, I’ll hold on to it for you… we really need to get you some money so you can buy some proper clothes.” Tiaria seemed both amused and annoyed.

Tiaria started walking and I followed her. We walked down a familiar road until we reached the front gates that we had come through a few days prior. Standing guard were two new knights that I had not seen before. They waved towards Tiara. As we reached the guards they gave her a quick bow.

“Morning Lord Apprentice, heading out today?” One guard said with a slight accent.

“That’s right, I am heading out with a new acquaintance.” Tiaria shuffled through her bag before pulling out both her trinket and mine. The guard took them and notched something onto both of them.

“Good luck out there you two.” The other guard said.

“Thanks, see you again!” Tiaria waved at them before marching past the gate to the outside. I followed after her.

Tiaria looked at me with a big grin. “Let’s go, Yu!”

“Ah-” I stopped for a moment. Tiaria stopped too and looked at me.

“Don’t I need a weapon?” I asked.
