Chapter 10:

Study Session

Two-way learning

“Unbelievable”.

“You can’t be serious”.

The two girls look at my notebook in frustration.

“I didn't think you would be this dumb” Luci closed my notebook and left it at the table.

“Stupid falls short for you” Yuki accommodates her glasses.

After an hour or so of studying with the girls, the time to test what I learned came, and as you can see, I failed miserably.

Although I felt like I was learning and felt like I could ace the exam, I somehow managed to get a lower score, even though it was the same exam with the same questions.

“We underestimate your stupidity” Lucy added.

I would like to defend myself, but this time, I can’t. I really can’t believe I did so poorly.

“Well, I think I just received too much information at once”.

“...”.

In the end, they decided to give me another chance, and we started studying again. We went a little bit slower than before and also tried to use different methods so maybe I could learn better in that way. With that, another hour or so passed.

“No use”.

“I surrender”.

Both girls looked exhausted, Luci looking up, totally worn out as Yuki dropped her head on the table also worn out.

Once again, I had made no progress. I can’t believe that even with the help of two geniuses I can’t get better scores. Maybe there is no salvation for me.

“There’s no way”.

“Something is wrong”.

The girls started to try and find some sense of what was happening.

“There is no way you can’t improve from a two-hour study session”.

“It must be your way of teaching” suddenly Yuki blamed Luci.

“What do you mean?” Luci looked at Yuki frowning her eyes, making her usual scary face, even scarier.

“Your methods are unnecessarily complicated. You are just confusing dumb guy”.

“Look who's talking. The way you solve those chemistry problems was so long and useless".

Before I realized, they started to blame each other. This is my fault; they are arguing because of my inability to learn. There has to be something I can do, but what? For now, I'll just try to calm them down.

"Girls…".

"Zip it!" Both of them turned around and yelled at me.

“...” I step back.

They continued for a few more minutes until.

Grrr.

Yuki’s stomach growled.

She put her hand on her stomach and looked very embarrassed. Luci looks at her, and just as it seems she is going to take the opportunity and mock her.

Grrr.

Luci's stomach growled too.

Now, both of them are with their hands in their stomachs, looking very embarrassed.

I look at my phone and realize it was almost one in the afternoon. We spent all morning studying, I totally forgot about lunch. I'm also hungry.

“Let me get you something to eat” I stand up from the chair and walk to the kitchen.

“...”.

They don't respond, but I'll take that as an approval. I take some rice that was left over from last night's dinner. I chop some carrots, grab some peas and mix them with the rice on the pan, then I put some eggs on top and mix it all. It is a pretty easy and simple recipe, but it has saved me so many times.

I served three plates and walked towards the dinner table. I hope they like it.

“I'll bring some forks”.

“Not for me” Yuki says.

“Why?” I ask her.

“I have my own” she says, pulling chopsticks out of her pocket.

“...” I don't know what to say.

“Why do you always have those in your pocket?” Luci asks.

“You never know when you will need them”.

I ignore the fact that Yuki keeps chopsticks in her pocket all the time and bring two forks for Luci and I.

We dig in. It seems like things have calmed down. Maybe it was true what Bernard told me, that girls get angry if they are hungry.

“I think we should stop studying” I tell the girls “I know I’m not getting anywhere and I'm just wasting your”.

“If that is your decision…” Luci said.

“We respect it” Yuki added.

After we finished eating, the girls started to head out.

“Oh, I almost forgot” I pull out Luci’s keys from my pocket. With all that happened I forgot that I had it. I hope she doesn’t question me like Yuki.

“Why do you have my key?”.

“Bernard found it in his office. Seems like you dropped it”.

“Why didn't he give it to us yesterday?”.

“Well, he is very forgetful”.

“Really?”.

“Yeah, yeah. He is extremely forgetful, sometimes I’m worried. It may be his age; I should send him to an asylum already”.

“...” She looks at me suspiciously.

“Well, at least I don't have to buy a new keychain, thanks I guess”.

She looks at her keychain, after a moment she quickly hides it, like realizing something.

I think I have been through this before.

“That is a nice keychain. I love dogs, they're cute”.

“You think so?” She looks at me with flashing eyes.

“Y- yes” I nod.

“I see” she seems relieved.

I don't get it. Why buy it if you don't want to show it. Anyway, she believes that Bernard found them and nothing weird.

I go and open the front door to say goodbye when…

“Oh Chris, what a timing”.

“Jane?”.

I encountered Jane and Emmi, who were about to open the door. They had bags in each hand.

“Oh my, what are you girls doing here?” Jane entered, giving me the two bags, she was holding.

“Hi girls, nice to see you again” Emmi entered as well, putting her bags on me too.

I entered and left the bags on the dinner table, while Jane talked to the girls.

“We just came to deliver something” Yuki and Luci told Jane.

“I see. Sorry for not being here, I had to do some buying before school starts. I hope Chris treated you well while I wasn’t home”.

Why does she question my hospitality?

“Yes, he was a decent host”.

“He did alright”.

What do you mean decent and alright?!

“Pardon the intrusion but we were already leaving” The girls said goodbye to Jane and Emmi.

While Jane and Emmi take whatever they bought out of the bags, I go out with the girls.

“I want to thank you and apologize, girls”.

“...”.

“You help me understand some things and also to realize many mistakes of mine, but I still failed to improve. Sorry for wasting your time and thank you for trying”.

Luci looks at me and sighs.

“Well, it is not your fault at all”.

“Yeah, we never teach anyone so maybe our techniques were not the indicated ones” Yuki added.

“...” at least they are not mad at me.

“Anyway, thank you for the food, it was good” Luci said.

“I like it” Yuki added.

“I'm glad you like it”.

They turned around and looked like they were about to leave but stopped there and glanced at each other for a couple moments.

“So…”.

“Did you like them?” Yuki asked.

“What?”.

“The Dorayaki”.

“Oh yeah, it was really good. I'll definitely like to try them again”.

“I see” Yuki looked at Luci in a proud stand.

“What about the Donauwelle?”.

“I like it as well; it was very tasty. I would love to try that again too”.

“Glad to hear that” Luci looked at Yuki also in a victory type pose.

I don’t get what is going on here, but they seem happy, so I'll let them be.

After the girls left, I went back to the apartment. I think I am going to read again all the formulas and tips the girls gave me, there has to be a way for me to actually learn them and improve. I guess I'll have to study them a lot and figure stuff out on my own.

I have seen the girls' intelligence firsthand, and they definitely deserve their perfect score. I want to show them by the first day of school that I did actually improve thanks to them. And hopefully they would accept being my tutors, because I really think they would help get through this first semester.

When I was about to enter my room to study, I felt a hand on my shoulder, a strange dangerous feeling that I had felt before runs through my body.

“Chris…” Jane speaks to me from behind.

“Yes!” I straight up my body.

“Would you explain to me why there were girls again in the apartment without my knowledge?”.

“Well, you see… this happened… and then that… haha, haha” I'm doomed.
