Chapter 22:

Last-minute decision

Watch Over You

My afternoon was somewhat dreadful, I had made a wrong turn walking into town. I was completely lost. I left my cell phone back at the house on accident and was adamant on finding my own way back to the house. I took the opportunity to sightsee, taking in the atmosphere and scenery around me. I’d found a store where I could buy Misako’s snacks and teas, and I purchased some t-shirts for myself as I was out of fresh clothing for the week incoming. There was a nearby park, and I decided to relax for the time being.

“Hi, may I sit on this bench next to you?” A woman asked.

She was of middle age, with ruby hair and a small dog with her. I nodded to the woman, and she took a seat next to me. We sat in silence as she let her dog wonder by my feet. I loved dogs, so I asked her if I could play with him.

“Of course, he’s very friendly.” She responded.

He was a cute breed, very tiny, but adorable.

“Are you from here?” She asked me after a while.

“Not particularly, no. I moved to Japan to study.”

“Wow, that’s amazing! Do you go to Tokyo-University?”

“I do, in fact. I’m studying in the business department.”

“So, you’re good looking and smart too!” She clasped her hands and laughed.

“I just do my best.”

‘She’s extremely friendly, I rarely speak to someone that I don’t know.’ I thought.

“May I ask, what field of work do you want to go into?” She asked.

I never had thought about it before, I knew I wanted to study something in business, but I never thought about why or where I wanted to end up. I wanted to reply to the lady, so I came up with a decision on the spot:

“I like making and repairing watches, so I’d like to do something in that field.” I said to her.

The older woman hesitated to respond, I could see a look of surprise on her face.

“What a coincidence!” She said.

“Why do you say that?”

“My husband works with watches! He owns a store not too far from here.” She said.

‘WHAT IN THE WORLD…’ My brain exploded.

“Wait, is your husband…Mister Toji Mitamo?” I asked instinctively.

“Why yes, he is. How did you know?” She responded.

“What a small world, I’ve met him a couple times. I helped him not too long ago.”

Missus Mitamo held a hand to her face; she was shocked beyond her core.

“You’re the boy that helped my husband!” She exclaimed.

“I am, I was with Ishi-” I stopped my sentence as I realized my predicament.

“Oh!” I said interrupting myself, “Sorry Missus Mitamo, I have to head back home!” I said, standing up.

I realized that I had left Misako upstairs in my room without her wheelchair. I was afraid she may have needed the bathroom, or other help, and I was spending my time outside without my phone.

“I’ll speak to you again, Missus Mitamo.” I greeted as I dashed off back to the house. I hoped to find my way back home correctly.

I arrived at the house, rushing up the stairs, I noticed my bedroom door was still closed. I opened it in a hurry.

“Misako, are you oka-” I began.

I plastered my hand to my mouth to keep quiet. Misako was okay, she was asleep, snoring oh so slightly. I could see her chest rise and fall in accordance with her breathing. She was in a deep sleep. I carefully unpacked my groceries as not to disturb her. I’d rushed home for nothing, rudely leaving Missus Mitamo back at the park with properly greeting her goodbye. I was going to apologize the next time I would find her again. I sat myself on Hiroshi’s bed, observing the sleeping girl.

“Sleep away the day, Misako. It looks like you need it.” I said softly.

I then turned on my phone to see any if I had missed any notifications on it. There were two, one from my father and one from Misako.

“I’ve shipped all of your things, David. They should arrive in the next few weeks.” The text message from my father read.

“Let’s go shopping together, next time.” Read the message from Misako.
