Chapter 13:

Bound by Curiosity

Silent Shards

"Keep running!" Piro urged, her voice filled with urgency. "We need to put as much distance as possible between us and the Slime King's domain!"

Each step we took made the dense forest blur around us, our breaths growing ragged. The pounding of our footsteps reverberated through the foliage, carrying the weight of our recent encounter.

The once mysterious and intriguing forest transformed into an ominous labyrinth, concealing unimaginable threats. Exhaustion finally forced us to slow down as we reached a small clearing. Gasping for air, we huddled together, forming a circle to catch our breath and let the adrenaline subside.

Kael wiped the sweat from his brow and turned to Piro, gratitude shining in his eyes. "Thank you, Anant. Back there, you saved our lives. Without this young girl's timely intervention, we might have met a gruesome fate." Elysia nodded in agreement, a shy smile on her face.

"It's nothing, really," I said, dismissing her gratitude. "By the way, this is Piro, a companion of mine," I introduced.

As I looked at Piro, I noticed she wasn't angry but muttering something. Intrigued, I asked, "Are you genuinely this concerned about me?"

Piro's gaze hardened, and she landed a heavy punch on my head. "Ah, what are you doing, Piro?"

"First of all, fill me in about these two and what happened," she said with a hint of arrogance, pushing me again. She approached closer, her frustration evident. "Foolant!"

Glancing at the pair, I could see the fear mirrored in their expressions, just as they had when the giant slime appeared.

Nevertheless, I proceeded to explain how I encountered an obsidian smile and how Sylphalope was unable to transform, communicating only in my mind. I shared how these two ended up joining me and then the encounter with the giant slime where I felt utterly helpless. The rest, Piro already knew.

"Hmm, I see," she exclaimed.

Continuing, she added, "But it's strange."

"What's strange?" I inquired, intrigued by her remark.

Piro approached the pair, closing the distance. "Where exactly are you two from?"

"Hey, what's so strange?" I pressed for an answer.

A menacing look in her eyes silenced me, leaving me no choice but to wait and observe.

As Piro interrogated the two pairs about their origins and how they ended up in that very spot, I observed their reactions. Elysia remained silent, while Kael provided a somewhat insufficient explanation.

In the midst of this unfolding chaos, my eyes were once again drawn to the intricate pattern adorning the darkness—a mesmerizing sight that both fascinated and unnerved me.

Sylphalope broke the tension, her voice echoing in my mind. "Is that what has been troubling you?"

I nodded and replied, "Yes, it has been weighing on my mind."

Sylphalope suggested, "Then let's inform Piro about this matter and tag along. Together, we can overcome any challenge."

I hesitated for a moment, then shook my head, voicing my dissent. "No," I whispered, barely audible amidst the commotion. "While Piro and the others are occupied, I'll quietly slip away and follow this mysterious figure. There might be answers to be found."

With a mix of concern and understanding, Sylphalope exclaimed and murmured, "Fine, I will help you face any challenge."

As I followed the enigmatic figure deeper into the forest, a sense of bewilderment washed over me. The figure didn't seem to perceive my presence, continuing its path as if I were invisible. It was a strange occurrence, and it only fueled my curiosity further.

The atmosphere grew increasingly menacing with each step I took. The air turned heavy, making it difficult to breathe, and a dense fog enveloped my surroundings, obscuring my vision. The forest seemed to come alive, its branches reaching out like twisted claws, attempting to intimidate and deter me. Yet, despite the palpable fear that coursed through my veins, I pressed on, drawn by an insatiable need to uncover the truth.

In the midst of this eerie ambiance, a familiar voice resonated in my mind, warming my spirit. It was Sylphalope, my trusted companion and guide. "Master, don't worry and move ahead. I will take care of any problem that may appear," her reassuring words echoed in my thoughts.

Taking solace in her presence, I replied back in my mind, grateful for her unwavering support. "Okay," I whispered, drawing strength from our unspoken connection. With Sylphalope by my side, I felt a renewed sense of determination, ready to face whatever challenges awaited me.

Suddenly, a bone-chilling voice pierced through the air, its source shrouded in mystery. "Finally, I can kill!" it proclaimed with sadistic delight. My heart skipped a beat, and a surge of fear gripped me tightly. I strained to locate the origin of the voice, my gaze darting around, searching for any sign of the fishy figure. But it was nowhere to be found. The voice seemed to taunt me, echoing from all directions, leaving me disoriented and vulnerable.

Yet, despite the overwhelming dread that threatened to consume me, I couldn't afford to succumb to panic. I had to stay focused and find a way out of this perilous situation. Sylphalope's presence served as a constant reminder of her unwavering support, urging me to stay strong.

With my heart pounding in my chest, I gathered my courage and took a tentative step forward, determined to confront the source of the haunting voice and unravel the enigma that lay at the heart of the forest. Though the path ahead was treacherous and fraught with danger, I knew that with Sylphalope watching over me, I wasn't alone. Together, we would face whatever awaited us, no matter how menacing it seemed.

The disorienting surroundings obscured my vision, making it increasingly difficult to discern what lay ahead.

In the midst of this disconcerting environment, a rustling sound caught my attention. It was faint at first, barely audible amidst the eerie silence. Through the dense bushes and branches, the unmistakable sound of a bowstring being stretched reached Sylphalope's acute senses. She alerted me with urgency, "Be careful, Master. Someone is preparing to attack."

My heart raced as I tried to comprehend the imminent danger. "But from where?" I questioned, my voice trembling with unease.

Sylphalope's voice echoed in my mind, tinged with determination. "I am not sure, but I have a plan. Listen closely and do as I say."

I nodded, relying on her guidance to navigate this perilous situation. Trusting in her wisdom and the bond we shared, I focused my attention, ready to follow her instructions.
