Chapter 14:

The Amusement Park (part 2)

Fading Scars

Rebecca and Ken continue to stroll through the amusement park until they come across an ice cream stand and decide to take a break and enjoy some ice cream to cool off. Ken chooses orange flavor, while Rebecca goes for mixed berries, and they even taste each other's flavors. Rebecca takes the opportunity to buy another bottle of water since the one she had earlier is empty.

Some time later, they pass by a target shooting stall, and Rebecca stops to look at the prizes. Ken also stops and gazes at the spot where her eyes are fixed, seeing that they are two frog plush toys.

"I think I'll give it a try, I really want those plush toys," he says to her, pointing at the plush toys she was looking at.

The booth attendant hands him the toy gun with three darts, and he starts aiming cautiously. Rebecca stands still, watching the scene anxiously. The first two shots miss, but the last one hits the target. Unfortunately, he doesn't score enough points for the plush toys and only wins a small panda keychain.

"Oh well... at least I tried."

"Can I try too?"

"Of course. Here you go." He hands her the gun, and the attendant gives her more darts. Ken watches her with crossed arms as she hits the target all three times. She claims the two plush toys.

"You did great! You could have told me that you're good at this! I just made a fool of myself."

"Actually, it's my first time trying..." Ken looks at her with his mouth agape, unable to say a word. "H-here, these are for you." She hands him the plush toys.

"No, you won them. It's only fair that you keep them."

"I got them for you..." Ken blushes slightly, smiling.

"Then let's do this: I'll take one, and you keep the other. Okay?"

"That's fine." She hugs the plush toy to her chest, covering her mouth, blushing.

She looks so cute... I wanna hug her!!

Her stomach grumbles, and she blushes even more.

"I... um..."

"Are you hungry?" He teases her.

"I-I want to try a caramel apple."

"Anything you want." She reaches for his hand, which he gladly takes, looking to the side to avoid her seeing his flushed face.

They hold hands just so they don't lose sight of each other... yeah...

Soon, they buy a caramel apple, and Rebecca admires it for a few seconds before taking a bite.

"It's too sweet!" She exclaims after struggling to swallow it.

"Don't you like it?"

"N-no, I like it." She lies, taking another bite, as they continue walking.

After a few more bites, she finally speaks to Ken.

"I can't finish it all..."

"Don't worry, I'll finish it for you." He takes it from her.

"But... doesn't it bother you that I already took a bite?"

"Why should it bo-" His gaze falls on her rosy lips, and he stops talking as they captivate him.

"I'm not picky! And I really like caramel apples!" He lies, quickly turning away, diverting her attention from his lips. He resumes walking, but a bit faster due to embarrassment, never letting go of her hand.

By now, the sun has set, but it's not too early to go home, and they still have to go on the most beautiful attraction, according to Rebecca: the Ferris wheel.

The line for it is very long, but with the sun already gone, Ken doesn't worry too much about her feeling unwell again, and they get in line without much concern. The line moves faster, and soon it's their turn.

Ken has been on the Ferris wheel a couple of times before with his family, but it's Rebecca's first time. She's excited to see the city from above. They sit facing each other, Ken in the center and Rebecca on the outer side for a better view. Their cabin ascends slowly as she looks out the window with anticipation, holding the frog plush toy in her lap.

"Did you have fun?" he asks, watching her with a smile.

"I had a blast! Thank you so much for inviting me." She looks at him, giving him one of the most beautiful smiles he has ever seen.

"I had fun too, so you don't have to thank me for anything."

Their cabin continues to rise gradually as she silently gazes at the surrounding scenery, and he can't help but look at her. Until they reach almost the top, and the Ferris wheel stops, leaving behind faint creaking sounds. She leans closer to the window, admiring the city lights and the people below, strolling and enjoying the rides and attractions of the amusement park.

"If..." Her smile fades. "If you were free to go wherever you wanted, where would you go?"

"You mean, are you asking if there's a place I would like to visit?"

"Not really what I meant. I don't know how to explain... Sometimes, I imagine being able to fly, and the first thing I do is leave this place. I fly over forests, above the sea, over cities around; but there's no specific place where I would stop." Rebecca, all this time, has continued to gaze at the horizon.

"Sorry, I said something nonsensical... forget about it..." She lowers her gaze. Ken didn't quite understand what she meant by those words, but he tries to lift her spirits in some way.

"How about we go on a little vacation when school is over? We can go to a place you'd like to visit." He smiles at her.

"That... would be nice." She still has a somewhat sad and thoughtful expression, but she looks him in the eyes as she utters this sentence.

Their attention is soon drawn to the fireworks that light up the sky, filling it with a myriad of colors, coming from the opposite direction of where Rebecca is looking.

"They have a fireworks show too? Wow!" She quickly moves to the other side of the cabin, watching them.

"They don't do it often, but they did it today because we're here, I guess..." He smirks.

"Oh, come on! It's impossible that they arranged a fireworks show just for us!"

"But aren't you glad they did it today?"

"I'm really glad."

They continue to admire the fireworks, but the Ferris wheel soon starts moving again. They both remain silent, still watching the fireworks, not wanting the moment to end too soon.
