Chapter 3:

Schooldays Overhaul! The second attempt... Or third maybe?

The Isekai Lie

Growing up as an overweight unpopular kid resulted in a very disappointing childhood. In my old world that is. Deciding to have a makeover before reaching for higher education seemed like a second chance at my childhood. It really felt like I nailed it that time, for a while... Until it no longer did. In this new world I don't get a semi-second chance at school-experience like last time, but an actual second chance at life itself. School is but a tiny part of it surely.

I try not to stare. But man... she is gorgeous. I wonder if my own mother looked like that at this young age. The teacher announces that class will now start. The lesson begins and so does my school life.

After the day ended, everybody start walking home. Their direction seems to change. I guess some of the kids live nearby. Some of them apparently made friends already, they are talking naturally. I see the girl who was sitting next to me walk alone. I attempt getting closer. Instead of thinking of a conversation starter, I just talk to her.

"Hey, I was sitting next to you in class. Can I ask what is your name?"

I was so proud I managed to converse without too much thinking, but I immediately realized it is somewhat not my strong area. First of all, that first day of school was just a begining class after the test. There weren't any introductions really. It's possible that tomorrow the teacher will be reading names before class and everybody will know everybody else quickly enough. If she is unfriendly, she might use that to shut me off completely. Secondly, in most isekai animes there is a semi-Japanese culture and it might be impolite of me to ask for her name without introducing myself.

"I'm Luna. My parents called me that because they said my eyes remind them of the first moon. What is your name? Your eyes are very pretty".

I felt so stupid for overthinking it all to this degree, that I almost apologized for being born male, now knowing there are such friendly females.

"My name is Rune. I'm named after the 7 runes of the 7 legendary moons. My mom is called 'Nana' for the same reason. I imagine she chose my name".

Luna replies: "So we are Rune and Luna, named after the moons".

As she says my name I suddenly realize how mysterious it feels that my current name "Rune" sounds a lot like my old-world-name "Bruno". How mysterious is it that we do not actually speak any language from the old world but in my mind the mutual meanings and puns they create still work. Much more mysterious to me is that girl though, she fascinates me despite being a normal girl of the same age (depending on how you count).

"Did you manage to make any friends today", I ask.

-"Just one", she replies.

-"Who? Is it one of the kids walking in our direction?"

She answers: "Yes... It's you".

I'm blushing and my face looks flustrated, I assume. Any embarrassed red face I have ever made was probably pink and pale in comparison. She tells me: "You look a bit pale. Don't forget to drink."

We arrive at the corner of her house, she lives a bit closer to school than me, but we already left the village before I even realized. "So you also live in the outskirts?"

-"Yes, do you live over there? Down the road?"

-"Yes, the far-away-one".

"Oh, okay. See you tomorrow!" She says, and quickly enters her house without waiting for a reply. I walk home, and I'm really glad I met her, I actually feel a bit scared of how differently everything could have gone had I not talked to her.

Those 3 years mostly taught me things I already knew. Surprisingly enough, not from my old world, but from my home schooling done by my parents. The lessons in school were mostly not practical, but tests-based. I did well, and most of the time got the best scores in my class.

My final year of school

"Rune! Tomorrow we get this half's final score. Remember if I surpass your score you are buying me ice tea!!!" She declares. "I know, I know". We reach the ice tea place, looking a bit like a tapioca based tea shop from my old world. She pays for me this time. We go there every day after school and she likes challenging herself to score higher and making bets like that to motivate herself. She ends up paying for my ice tea more often than not, but I find myself really impressed with her dedication.

In the shop we see some kids from our class. "Hey! that's Luna and Rune! Are you doing that bet again?" one of them asks.

-"Yes, and tomorrow I will win".

-"Luna, I hope you are prepared to pay for his tea again".

-"NO! Tomorrow I will win! I have surpassed him before!" she replies loudly.

-"But this test is from extra class we should normally only learn in "classes-university". You know Rune's parents, they probably taught him about that before he could fully speak". She kindda freezes cutely, while I'm surprised that kid caught on to that, as he is accurate.

The next day

We are both holding the papers. "1, 2, 3!" Luna counts as we flip them at the same time. We both got almost perfect scores. We got an identical score of 95. Luna seems as happy as she is on times when she surpasses my score. I guess that counts too. We go to the ice tea shop and she suddenly asks: "Wait, so who won?"

-"Well, I think we both won".

-"So how about I buy you ice tea, and you buy me one??" she adds.

"But then what is the difference between that and just normally buying? It costs the same doesn't it?" I ask, while still willing to indulge the sentiment.

"I will order extra gelly so mine costs more!" She says and smiles. I stare at her smiling. It's probably the most stunning thing I've ever seen in my life, both of my lives. I buy her ice tea with extra gelly with minimal words.

As our study continues while we enjoy our school days, the final day with the final test approaches and arrives. We studied well, and so we pass it easily enough. The teacher reads out loud the names of the students who pass. I don't notice anybody's name not being read, but that might be because everyone whose name is being read is familier to me so it's hard to notice if I myself forgot sombody's name. "I hope nobody failed" I thought to myself.

After the teacher finished, she told us we now have to decide on our future path. As she continues explaining, she declares how every "class university" is different and going forward we will meet new people and say goodbye to old ones. My heart stops a little.

I was pursuing close combat training while Luna was after study of magical essence. I realize relatively fast that if archery and swordsmenship is divided by different schools, there is no way that magic will be in that same school either. The teacher keeps explaining that most of us will live inside the school campus for 3 years as most of us live closer to the village and these classes universities are closer to the capital.

I'm in complete shock as for some reason I did not see something so predictable coming. I try looking in Luna's direction hoping her smile and excitement will defeat my sadness but I see her looking at the teacher's direction, while in tears. She realizes I look at her and she turns her gaze to me. She is still the most beautiful thing I've ever seen.

I grab her and smile instead. "Luna! In those 3 years we are going to be apart, but after that, we are going to be ready for adventures in this world! Then we will have a life time of adventures! Will you team up with me after we gradute?" I ask.

"Of course! So no need to be sad! We just need to be excited!" She replies, smiling while still tearing. "It's a promise!" I declare, as we can now both feel the excitement, looking forward to the next chapter in our life, and obviously, looking forward to a period after that chapter as well.

We make preperations, say our goodbyes and travel each to their own destination. Soon, we will choose a class to master, until we meet again.
