Chapter 4:

3 Years without Luna

The Isekai Lie

It is too long a journey by foot, and seems expensive in any other means, so the school is paying for carriages to take us today to our destined "class university". "Only a few kids from my school chose close-combat-specialty I see", I'm thinking to myself, seeing as we are sitting in the carriage as only 3 kids.

-"Ohh man! I'm so jealous of you Rune! You got OP parents, you were born for this... I'm not sure I'm ready".

-"It will be fine!" the other kid answers him. "We have prepared for this too".

"Honestly, I hope I'm ready..." I add.

After a few hours, we finally arrived at the capital. A city named "Quadmountia". I look outside of the carriage to check if there are 4 big mountains as the name suggests. Oddly enough, there aren't.

We reach the center of the city, and there awaits us a guide. "Hey! Congratualtions on your graduations and new upcoming enrollments. Here is some basic information to get you started. From here you can go by foot to any one of the 4 big universities. As you can see on the map-..." as he points to a map on the wall of the city-center, "in each corner of the city there is a school specializing in a specific class. The city has 4 gates: North, south, east and west, and of course, on the corners sit the schools: Swordsmenship, daggery, macery and archery".

-"Oh, Rune, seems we gotta go that way then".

-"I'm to archery, good luck to you two!" the other one says and goes his way.

-"Are you coming Rune?" he asks as I stare at the map.

I stand there for a while a little fazed, as I understand the mountains are actually the tall school buildings, which I didn't notice from the inside of the carriage since the rest of the buildings are pretty tall for just normal buildings, hiding the universities behind them. They are made of stone that looks steardy and new. I think about how 3 out of these 4 schools are close combat related, and seeing how they are seperated by it I think about Luna, and how we got seperated for that very reason.

"You go ahead without me, I still need to make some choices", I say with confidence, not really knowing my choice, though.

-"Shi*... I was sure you will go for a mighty weapon like your mother, the famous 'Nana of the Battle Axe', but I guess I've never asked. Well, good luck on whatever you choose! Not that you will need it".

"You too". I reply, noticing I caught the guide's attention.

"You are Rune, Nana's son? Why, that's incredible! It says here you were the top of your class", he says while waving his paper, "figures! I heard she had a son named Rune but I didn't realize it was you until your mother was mentioned. So, what's the matter? Not sure which class to go for? I thought you top scorers always knew what you wanted".

"This is my time to choose now, and I don't have to go the same path as her. I will use my agility and strength to dominate close combat through a short sword, a dagger".

-"You don't say... A fair choice", he answers.

"I will take my leave then, too. Did you know my mother? What is your name?" I ask as I'm ready to go.

-"They call me 'Go', say hello to your parents for me when you get the chance".

"No problem, thanks for your guidance".

I set my sails to the daggery school, specializing in close combat and light weapons. When I arrive, I see the welcome sign: "Welcome to the school of 7 daggers". There is a huge statue of my mother...

I'm in complete and utter shock. "Why in the hell is there a standing statue of my mother there? Isn't it the wrong school for that? No, It's still weird even if it was the swords school!" I end up saying this to myself out loud. I'm very proud of my parents, but I'm a different person from them. Sometimes it feels like I'm living in their shadow, that only casts a light towards the outside. "Is there something about themselves they aren't telling me?" I truly wonder.

I enter and sign up. -"You are rune!" a man tells me, although that much I already knew. "Welcome to our school! Are you aware that your own mother started her career right here? She was the top student, I'll have you know. We expect great things from you too".

"Here? Isn't she a broad weapon specialist?" I ask.

-"Yes, a very broad specialist. Did you think she only mastered the broad sword? She teaches some courses in all 4 universities of the capital. She studied here but she mastered all, even archery! Magic was her one thing she famously stepped away from. I'm not sure why".

I've been homeschooled for almost 10 years by them, and I don't know anything about them. More accurately, I know everything and nothing about them. I know my parents more than anybody else in the world, but every stranger seem to have some wisdom about them, making me somehow lack in knowledge, and in the dark.

The new school days start, and it's the first day. I sit in class and I'm waiting for it to start. As everybody sits down I notice the lack. A beautiful girl doesn't sit next to me. There is no person with a red hair like my mother's, and eyes that are black as opal to sit there. The class starts and unlike my old life that felt empty, this time I feel that I reached the best state possbile, but now with a feeling of absence. Spending these 3 years without Luna might be... more than I can take.

I was ready to share with her how I feel, see if she knows something about my parents too, seeing as she never really cared for their mighty name as much as she cared about our bond. The excitement suddenly took a depressing turn.

But, I made her a promise. That, I shall keep no matter what.
