Chapter 14:

The Phantom Food Heist

Love Can't Be Bought!

Under the cover of night, hours after the exercise's ending, Toshiko and his friends sit around a lantern. "Kazuki, you said what again?" Toshiko asks. "If you make iced hot chocolate, is it just fancy chocolate milk?" Kazuki retorts. "...I mean I'd THINK so, it's the same thing basically ain't it?" Hiroshi adds. Kazuki waves his hand, dismissing the comment.

"Nah, nah, because you can add stuff to the hot chocolate to make it less like chocolate milk." Toshiko leans forward, an eyebrow raised in confusion. "It would still taste like chocolate milk in the end man. This is just an endless cycle.." Hiroshi's stomach grumbles. "Stop mentioning chocolate milk.. I already miss the food at Hakuryu... It was so good.. all they have here is.. plain burgers.." Kazuki gains a devious smirk, arching forward towards the middle of the lantern.

"I heard a little rumor the teacher's are LOADED with food, whaddya say to a little stealth mission?" Hiroshi and Toshiko look at each other, deciding on their next course of action. Not long after, they smile widely with anticipation. Toshiko pats his knee with his hand before leaning forward. "What're waiting for then? Move out!" They scatter out of the cabin, turning off the lantern and grabbing their backpacks. As they sneak through the camp, guards litter the area with bright flashlights. Toshiko sighs. "...Damn. That's annoying." Kazuki points to himself with a thumbs-up, smiling confidently. "It's fine! Let's just sneak past the girl's cabin, then it'll be a smooth ride!" Kazuki does a roll behind cover while Hiroshi just walks over normally.

Toshiko does a stealthy crawl over to their spot. Hiroshi crosses his arms. "You don't have to be stealthy, it's not like we're behind enemy lines or something." Kazuki shoots up, hitting his head on a window. He covers his mouth, holding back a yell. "You were saying..." Toshiko adds. "Nevermind.. we'll get caught if Kazuki doesn't pretend to be stealthy..." Hiroshi whispers. Inside the cabin, Emi wakes up in a sleepy daze, cuddling a mushroom plush toy. Aya jumps out of her bed. "Just stay there.. I'll be back.." Aya says, half-awake.

She groggily steps out of the cabin, only to find the three of them tiptoeing past the entrance. Kazuki begins to sweat profusely. "W-what is that murderous aura...?!" Aya cracks her knuckles. "Give me ONE good reason you're sneaking past our cabin in the dead of night." Hiroshi and Aya lock eyes, his childlike countenance melting her facade. "Basically, the teachers have WAY better food than us! So you know... We decided to do a little raid.."

Aya stares at them, a little surprised. "If that's true... You've gotta let me in on that!" Kazuki steps backwards, taken aback. "Absolutely NOT! This is OUR food." Toshiko puts his hand on Kazuki's shoulder. "C'mon, she'd be pretty helpful. You saw first hand didn't you?" Defeated, Kazuki sighs heavily. "Fine..." Toshiko looks at the small group and back at Kazuki. "If we had costumes, this'd be way better." At that moment however, a guard walks by. The group quickly dash over to the woodland. The guard scans the area with his flashlight.

"That's so weird. I could've sworn I heard something.." The bushes loudly rustle from their movement and the guard immediately takes notice. He slowly approaches, his hand reaching out to touch the bush. Before he can get close enough, a tanuki jumps out of the bushes and scurries off. "Jeez.. had me worried for nothing. I get paid enough for this, but I wish I didn't.." the guard walks away without a word. "Maybe we should hurry.." Toshiko suggests. "Then keep up!" Aya retorts, dashing off.

She swiftly makes her way to the largest wooden cabin, dodging all the flashlight beams. The others follow her lead, taunting the guards before slipping into the darkness of night. They slide open a window, helping each other inside. The brightly lit empty cabin has scores of food, some that they've never seen before. "Amazing... This is our treasure.." Hiroshi whispers. "Maybe I should be a teacher, what the hell?!" Toshiko yells. "Keep it down, man! They'll probably come back soon!" Kazuki retorts. "I don't think we'll have to worry about that right now.." Aya adds.

She shows them them the open fridge and the empty bottles in there. "Ah, that explains a lot." Toshiko responds. "Whatever! Just take whatever you can get!" Kazuki yells. They immediately jump at the opportunity, shoving all manner of snacks and food items into the bag. Mere moments after they begin, they hear laughter coming from outside. They freeze up like deer in headlights as Sakura kicks the door open, leaning on Kurosawa with a flushed face.

"Pfft- You're a RIOT, Kurosawa-san! When I told you things weren't normal you shoulda believed me!" Kurosawa loudly scoffs. "C'mon~, it can't be that bad!" Their attention focuses forward, with everyone turned out. Toshiko wraps a tablecloth around his head like a mask. "This is all a dream~ you didn't see anything~" He says, waving his hands around mystically. "SCATTER!" Kazuki yells, as they jump out of the open window and scatter into the night. The two teacher stare at each other, dumbfounded.

"...Yeah, normal tuesday night." They both say in unison, nodding in understanding before passing out asleep on the floor with a loud thud. "Heh-heh! Mission Complete!" Toshiko chuckles to himself, clutching his backpack and running back to the cabin before the sun rises.
