Chapter 18:

Movie date and puke

Fading Scars

Ken, Rebecca, Will, and Nora have all recently arrived at the cinema. It's an excellent way to celebrate the success of the group project presentation they had yesterday. It's a movie that Will and Ken have been looking forward to, while Nora knows about it because Will is a fan, and Rebecca has no idea what to expect. They line up to buy tickets and snacks. The cinema is very crowded because it's the movie’s premiere, but all the ticket counters are open, so they don't have to wait long before it's their turn. Along with the tickets, they also get two medium popcorns and four drinks.

They head to the theater, and Rebecca stops to look at the movie poster on a wall.

"Everything okay?" Ken asks her.

"Yes... I was just admiring the movie poster..." She lied. In reality, she was thinking about how superheroes aren't her thing.

They find their theater, and after locating their seats, they sit down. Fortunately, they got seats higher up and in the center; the downside is the swarm of kids sitting below them, going back and forth and talking loudly.

"I hope they choke on their popcorn," Nora says, and Rebecca looks at her in shock.

"Babe, their moms could have heard you," Will scolds her.

"Don't care." Nora crosses her arms. Shortly after, the movie begins, and the kids all sit down and stay quiet.

A few minutes into the film, Ken and Will are completely immersed in it. However, Rebecca is having a hard time concentrating and looks around: Nora is on her phone, like a few other people, while the rest of the theater is focused on the movie.

Suddenly, the movie's audio becomes louder, and a series of gasps fill the theater as Rebecca turns her attention back to the film, trying to follow it now. Apparently, the main plot twist has just been revealed, where the villain discloses to the protagonist that he is his father.

On the other hand, Ken doesn't take his eyes off the screen, even when he feels like having caramel popcorn instead of the regular ones closer to him. So he reaches for them without taking his eyes off the screen, not realizing that Rebecca is in between him and Nora. He can't reach the popcorn, leaving his hand to wander aimlessly until he bothers to turn his head to see where they actually are. As soon as he turns his head, Rebecca does the same, and he finds himself inches away from her face. He can feel her warm breath on his face, along with the scent of coffee and cream.

It's a strange combination... He thinks for those few seconds they stare at each other, and he takes the opportunity to enjoy the closeness and look into her wide eyes. They break their gaze, avoiding eye contact for the rest of the screening.

After the movie, the two guys insist on staying until the end of the credits. As soon as they finish, they leave the theater. Rebecca blinks repeatedly due to the sudden change in light.

"Are you okay?" Ken immediately approaches her, holding her face with his hand, keeping it still in front of his.

"I'm fine." Her eyelids return to opening and closing at a normal speed.

"Good, because I couldn't bear it if something happened to your beautiful green eyes."

Meanwhile, Nora and Will watch the two exchanging glances.

"Told you. The one-sided crush is happening right now."

"I need to use the restroom. I'll be right back." Ken says, leaving the three of them alone.

"So, did you like the movie? Which part, in particular?" Nora asks Rebecca.

"Um... yes, I liked it, especially the final part where the protagonist's friends show up to help him. What about you? Which part did you like the most?"

"The main character's drama with his friends. I always enjoy the fights between friends in movies."

"Are you kidding? None of those is the best part... because the whole movie was fantastic!" Will states firmly.

"Here he goes..." Nora says as she places a hand on her belly.

"I especially liked it because they were very faithful to the comic, and-"

"Sorry, Will, I need to go to the restroom right now." Nora warns him already starting to walk quickly towards the toilet rooms.

"Wait, are you okay?" Will yells after her, but she's already too far and doesn't stop.

Seeing Will concerned, Rebecca offers to check on Nora, and he simply nods in response.

Bewildered, Rebecca follows Nora, hoping to find the women's restroom. As soon as she enters, she hears the sounds of someone throwing up. A woman comes out of one of the two occupied stalls, and that's how she knows where Nora is. She decides to wait for Nora to finish, leaning against the wall next to her stall. When she hears the sounds fade, she decides to speak up.

"Are you okay?" Nora didn't expect someone to still be there, let alone Rebecca. Several minutes pass before she speaks.

"I'm fine. It's just a stomach ache. I'll be okay."

"Are you sure?"

"Do you pretend to know my body better than I do?"

"N-no... I'm just worried... Actually, it's Will who's worried..."

"Say nothing to Will."

"But he's really worried..."

"You know nothing! Just do as I say!"

"O-okay, I promise I won't say anything to Will."

"Ken too."

"And to Ken too."

"No one must know, but especially those two."

"I swear I won't tell anyone. Are you okay now? Do you want some water?"

"I don't need anything. Let's go back to the others." She immediately exits the stall and walks past Rebecca towards the mirror, where she splashes her face and fixes her messy hair, and then exits without saying anything or waiting for Rebecca.

Rebecca still follows her, and together they rejoin Ken and Will, who have been talking about the movie in the meantime.

"Is everything okay?" Will asks Nora.

"Yes, I just had a sudden stomach ache. Sorry for making you worry." Will strokes the back of her hands as she speaks.

"I'll walk you home." He says. "See you at school, guys." He waves to Ken and Rebecca.

"Let me walk you home." Ken says to Rebecca as Will and Nora walk away from them.

Rebecca nods, and they also leave the cinema together.
